I dont know what his problem has been this year but good god has he been awful. constant turnovers that lead to chances for the other team, soft passes, lacks discipline and takes dumb penalties, has 1 or 2 good plays a game but doesnt make up for all the faults he has on defense. what will it take for him to get back to his rookie year? a new D partner like McDonagh or Cernak?

He's been doing this for the better part of a year. Finding new partners for him to work with doesn't fix the issue he cannot independently develop

The problem may be his switching sides, often many times in the same game, because Copper is trying to get his ice time up to a top 4 kind of minutes. (20 minutes+). He would be better served to play with Hedman all the time, or with McD until Cernak is back.

He's not that great on the right side, he's used there to increase his minutes and stop Rutta/whoever from having to play 20mins a game. He's a natural LHD and even with Cernak injured you have Bogosian, Foote and Rutta who are right handed, you wouldn't exactly want them switching over either and creating a mess down the lineup.

If anything I think they need to stop switching him to the right and just keep him on the left to stay more comfortable, just lower his minutes by a bit so he isn't overused. Rutta has been fine this season and so has Bogosian.

I've been noticing Cooper going with Hedman-Mcdonagh recently late in the game though.

I really don’t think there is any excuse for his play. he is still getting the easiest minutes possible and not looking good at all.

The amount of people that wanted McD gone this year and play Sergachev more.....

McDonagh and Cernak are doing heavy lifting this season.
McD carried our D hard at times last playoffs with Hedman being very mediocre. Sure the contract might look bad in the last year or two but we absolutely need him right now.

He has somehow become, probably, the most underrated guy amongst our fanbase on here. I think it's because of HF's obsession with youth. But the reality is we will be lucky if Sergachev ever matures into the player McDonagh is right now.

Had another bad crosscheck penalty last night after saying that, lol.

It was less egregious than the other ones. I don't think it would have stood out if not for the seriously bad penalties he took leading up to the suspension, so I think he deserves a pass for that particular one.

The thing with Serg is we need to see him take another step forward. Consistency is always the last thing to come, but he just hasn't been as good as some guys who shouldn't be nearly as good as him.

How would you rate Sergachev's ability to exit our zone (either carrying the puck out or giving a stretch pass to a forward) and his ability to enter into the offensive zone?

Dog shit because he plays too arrogant. He makes so many unforced turnovers. He's great when he's on but that's been a minute. He waits too long and gets too cute instead of making the simple play he needs to. It's frustrating cause he's his own worst enemy right now.

The worst is when you see him hold onto just slightly too long and he's killed all his passing options up the ice and has to make a panic play or ice the puck. Or when he thinks he's clear of a forechcker coming from behind him and they catch him sleeping.

His zone entries aren't bad when he gets some steam but exiting his own zone is iffy.

I find he makes some good passes out of the zone but as you guys stated, he needs to get a little faster at deciding who to get the puck to. Definitely, when he's able to get some steam carrying the puck out of our zone, I find he is able to enter the offensive zone, I think that's due to his skating, which I believe is his strongest trait.
