Mike Richards IV: Started From The Bottom, Still Here *MOD WARNING Post #194*

Because of the assets they are getting coming back.

I mean hypothetically if the Kings were rebuilding bottom feeders and the Leafs were contending for the cup would we have taken Clarkson, a prospect and a pick for a 7th rounder. Would have been win-win for both teams.

The Kings need to find someone like that, and apparently teams were interested but the Kings are not giving up Toffoli or Pearson, and if that is the asking price the Kings are better off going the buyout route.
Personally I'd give up Shore or Zykov to get someone to take all of Richards. If that doesn't work, just buy him out and be done with him. Deal with those tough buy out years when they come up.

Wouldn't the tough buyout years be during the prime years of our core though?

According to this biography, Dave Taylor was captain of the Kings for 4 seasons. Dustin Brown will easily eclipse that mark and likely will leave the Kings as their longest serving captain.

Did you see this part of my post that you quoted because we are saying the same thing regarding Taylor.

Of course Taylor wasn't C his entire time with the team and Brown while a different type of leader is also very good in his own way but I was spoiled by Taylor's willingness to settle things on the ice as well as off of it.

It's in the part that you quoted.

IF we make the playoffs I would like to see a line of. .

Clifford-Richards-Shore

I really don't know if Shore has gain Sutters trust yet. He already called him out, so right now if we get into the playoffs Shore would be our 4th line center.

Then there's Pearson, someone has to come out when he returns because he's better than anyone currently on the 4th line.

 Pure comedy.... thanks for the laughs!!!

I chuckled a bit too on that one.

What is funny about what he said?

The numbers are pretty simple, you don't need to be a labor lawyer to get it.

- Richards NHL cap hit is $5.75m, his AHL cap hit is $4.82m, his actual guaranteed salary regardless of league is $7m.

- Shore's NHL cap hit is 925k, he has no cap hit when in the AHL, his actual salary is 925k in the NHL and 70k in the AHL.

So when the Kings made the transaction the cap savings on MR was immediately cancelled out by the call up of Shore who's actual salary increased by about 850k (pro rated for less). But by all means keep saying the Kings made the move for financial reasons, whatever excuse floats your boat, the reality is, the Kings gained nothing in cap space and are paying more money in actual salary with the Shore for Richards transaction than they would have had they not made it.

BTW, do either one of you have an opinion for the sudden improved play of Nolan and Clifford? They look pretty good for a couple of anchors.

No, I am concerned about where the salary cap is heading, as well as Kopitar's declining play. Kopitar isn't going to collapse next season, but his performance is not trending in a good direction. Kopitar in terms of the offense he produces is not going to be a player that is worth 8 years and $9M a season. He just isn't. It's been well documented how players' production declines after they hit their late 20's. I don't see anything in Kopitar's game this season that would cause me to think that he is an anomaly. Kopitar will still be a great two-way center for some time though.

If Kopitar came to Dean and said he would take 5 years at $8M a season, I would be inclined to do that deal this summer.

Why dont you say 5x5M; its more realistic

Why would I need to do this. I am not offended by your style. You're the one crying about it.

These are not pie in the sky options. Buying out Richards is easily done. All it takes is money. Negotiating a good deal for the Kings with Kopitar can be done.

Some of you are people I would like to be sitting across the table with in a negotiation, that's for sure.

Lol, crying. Ok man.

Spending $20 million to tell someone to go away is never easy. I'm not saying it won't be done, but to suggest that it's nothing is just false.

And I'd love to be Kopitar's agent across that table from you. You'd be without more cap space or the top forward on the team, you pick. Kopitar can set his price and get it on the open market easily. LA is not getting a guy to replace him nearly as easy. For someone so concerned about the cup window shutting, playing hardball with your best forward isn't going to help you.

We currently have over 2 million in cap space we do not need Richards in Manchester for any cap reasons. If he was only there for cap reasons for possible trades then he would have been immediately recalled after the deadline since there would be no further reason to keep him there. Insider is basically saying that Richards will probably be called up like the Black Aces are every year, that doesn't mean he will play.

Voynov.

Because he doesn't like Nolan.

I doubt DL resigns him for 3 years if Sutter hates him.

So at this point... the Kings are going to need some luck to sneak into the playoffs... and will be the first time 5 points out in February to make it... Is that right?

The Kings are looking at the last playoff spot and it looks like catching the Canucks is a long shot. From the Canucks pre-game thread they are running Sedin/Bonino/Vey/Horvat down the center... Are you ****ing telling me that's a better line up then what the Kings have?

Someone needs to be held accountable for how terrible this season has been. Sure there have been injuries/Voynov... but the Flames just lost their best defenseman and Vancouver just had Miller get injured.

Well Richards is playing for the Monarchs so he's been held accountable.... anyone else? Coach? Captain?

Edit: oh yeah and in the spirit of the $20M buyout... Hell if anyone wants to pay me $20M to go away I'll take it!!!

Calgary's played like one game without Giordano, Vancouver has like 5 without Miller. We;ve had 60+ without Voynov, that's not a fair comparision.

I never said buying Richards out was easy on Phil's wallet, I just said all it took was money, and as Herby and I have already explained Mike Richards' contract is a sunk cost. If he isn't playing for the Kings in the NHL, he shouldn't be part of the Kings' organization.

Just spit balling, but I bet Dean can get a lot more for Kopitar than additional cap space. He is still the Kings' asset for the entire 2015-2016 season. If Kopitar's salary demands are not reasonable, he can be moved for some pretty good players and/or picks.

Say for example Dean talked to Detroit. Let's start by asking for Nyquist in return, maybe ask them to throw in Sheahan and a #1 pick as well. After that he still has cap space to add something else to the Kings, and he still has Doughty, Carter, and Quick.

You see Dean does have cards to play in a contract negotiation with Kopitar. Lombardi will never allow Kopitar to leave the Kings and get nothing in return, and I don't think he will allow Kopitar's agent to screw up his cap management. As I said before though, I expect Kopitar will be reasonable.

Richards really isn't just a sunk cost, since the sole reason to buy him out is to create cap space to use on another player or to retain current players. It is the $20 million plus any additional salary added. So in real dollars once everything is done the cost will far exceed $20 million. It's $20 million plus added players and/or added salary.

Using your Kopitar example, Nyquist, Sheahan and the 1st don't replace Kopitar. Nyquist is nice, but he doesn't fill the void of Kopitar, which is my point. That deal smells just like the Thornton deal, three assets for one really good one and most of the time the team getting the best player wins. We aren't nearly as tough to play without Kopitar up the middle. Sheahan isn't going to come close to replacing him, so we'll be Carter, Sheahan, Stoll/Shore and someone else down the middle. That doesn't get a cup very likely.

Meanwhile Kopitar can laugh at DL's hardballin', take his trade to whoever wants him, odds are it'll be a playoff team since he'll only be a rental at the time of the trade. And after one year can go and sell himself to the highest bidder.

So he gets what he wants and LA gets three good assets but none elite and likely just shot their cup hopes in the foot.

Yeah, he is. Look up the definition of a sunk cost. It's money already spent on an asset that you no longer can use, or have no need of using.
