Mike Richards IV: Started From The Bottom, Still Here *MOD WARNING Post #194*

It's about results...

Sutter = 10 playoff series wins, 1 playoff series loss since his arrival.

Yet he doesn't know where to play Mike Richards for the team's benefit?

Is the team playing well because of Sutter... or is the team stacked and playing well despite Sutter?

Look at things like Gaborik/Kopitar dragging Lewis along for good parts of the season. Toffoli/Pearson leading the team in goals to start the season and getting around 10 mins a game. Various grinders sprinkled randomly throughout the lineup. Brown/Stoll/Williams as a second PP unit

It would be much easier to argue that Sutter shouldn't be questioned if the Kings 1st or 2nd in the division... Sutter's regular season BS leads to him being questioned. He only has himself to blame. :)

I'm not the only one that's questioning Sutter by the way. Lombardi had to see an 8-0 run out of this team before he thought about getting Sekera. In other words Lombardi wasn't sure enough this team could make the playoffs to spend a first rounder.

Unacceptable Sutter records...

2-28 in gimmick hockey. I suppose it is Sutter's fault though that guys like Kopitar, Carter, etc. can't score a goal in a friggin shootout this season to save their lives.

Acceptable Sutter records...

10-1 in real hockey.

Yeah it's a gimmick... the Kings are in a tight race and those throwaway points would come in handy at this point.

Is it Sutter's fault on any given night the shootout is lost... no...(unless Lewis is in the shootout) is a 2-28 record Sutters fault... yes.... at some point, hopefully before you go 2-28, someone says we need to address this.

Both.

Yes, we are stacked with probably the best lineup in the league other than Pittsburgh, but when we start to play like crap it forces Sutter to make line changes. Sutter has no choice really. Both ways he gets criticized. He can either continue with the same lines during the slump and look dumb or change them up, sometimes that looks ridiculous but it's the right thing to do as a coach. Almost every line combo has been tried (with players in their respective positions). We are just a good yet lazy team.

Mike Richards is not going to retire, he stands to make way too much money over the next Five years.

Even if he gets buried in the AHL, he still makes millions.

Is 2-28 the shooters records?

On NHL.com the shooters this season are 5-for-32. Gaborik is 2-for-5, Kopitar is 1-for-8, Carter is 2-for-8, everyone else has been shutout. Doughty, Lewis, Brown, Williams, King, Richards, Stoll, Toffoli have all had a shot or more and failed. Toffoli is 0-for-4.

What do you expect from him? Who should he put out there, Clifford? Nolan? Who would you put out there?

The shoot out is a skills competition, if Toffoli, Kopitar, Doughty, etc. can't score, that's on them, not Sutter.

This season Kopitar, Carter and Gaborik are a combined 5-for-21. Last season they were 12-for-29. That's a big reason for our piss poor shootout record this year, not Sutter's coaching.

So Sutter gets no credit for holding the team together after losing there 2nd best
defenseman(Voynov), Pearson missing how many games now? Also very little from
Stoll, Brown and Richards who are underperforming compared to the amount they are paid. The Kings can still do something in the playoffs but I would hardly call there line up stacked at least not compared to other years.
Maybe while you hand out blame you should include Dean Lombardi because he was the one who decided to enter the year standing pat. Lombardi was the one who decided not to use the compliance buy out on Richards that would have provided more than enough cap space for help at the center position. Lombardi also gave Brown a long term contract that looks like the next salary cap problem.

On flip side, every team loses players, every team has underperformers, and DL almost guaranteed consulted with Sutter on whether or not to hang onto Richards and sign Brown to that contract. I think Sutter is great, but it's not like the challenges this year have been much different than other teams issues.

Sure, but that is the point. We all second guess coaching decisions but I think Sutter gives the Kings the best chance to win. Sutter is certainly not perfect and
sometimes the Kings are not the most exciting team but he played his part in the Kings winning 2 Stanley cups.

Assuming that Richards gets moved (I agree entirely with DeeShamrock where MR is concerned and many other observations too) and we move Voynov (or lose him, who knows at this point) we will be in a sort of miniature retooling (or whatever other stupid name you call it). Stoll is likely done or at least unlikely to come back to us and if Williams is offered in the $5mx5yrs range I hope he takes it, he has earned it but he will be gone too. Next seasons line up will be interesting.

Pearson Kopi Gabby Carter Toffoli Brown King Shore Lewis Nolan AndyA Weal Auger etc up front

Serkera (plenty of space to sign him) Martinez Muzzin McNabb Greene Doughty Forbort on D

Quick Berube (if we move Martin)

Gives us room to make a change or two up front and a solid D corps that can be adjusted if needs dictate too. Lots of big changes but I think it is at least the foundation for another run and the space needed to remain competitive while still having enough room to make any needed adjustments. Wow am I rambling.

I agree 100%, just not with your examples.

If we lose Stoll, Williams, Richards and Voynov, that's also a lot of freed up cap space and term, depending on how much of Richards contract we eat. I'd imagine Stoll is replaced from within (Shore) and Williams and Richards salary is used to buy replacements of some sort as well. Voynov's money likely goes to Sekera or he comes back and it goes to him.

Really not a step back from this year, but we lose a ton of character and playoff savvy.

They do lose some guys who contributed to the teams past success, but the teams who have long term success are going to have to adopt the New England Patriots way of thinking. In a cap world the players are just a commodity and once they lose their value they are moved on from, no matter how much they contributed in past years. That has been one weakness that Lombardi showed last summer with Richards and Greene.

Yessir. I can't imagine that we won't find a suitable replacement for Stoll likely in Shore who is just going to keep getting better imo. Losing Jdub will hurt no matter what but he has more than earned his payday. There are a few players out there including one or two from within that we could use to try and replace him. I think that we will bring Weal up for next season. Otherwise we would have moved him instead of MQN. We won't eat more than $1.8 of MR's contract if at all (maybe add a sweetener to someone willing to take the whole contract) and that along with the $4.whatever from moving Voynov or Martinez will do the job. Having Pearson back for a full season along with Sekera will put us right back where we need to be as far as I can see.

I had a Brown thread all started a few months ago so you people would shut up about it in this one. I guess I should have hit post.

Now who do the Brown lovers whine about in that thread that should have their own thread, too?

I have no problem with Brown. He's still the captain and contributes with his hitting (that MR no longer does).

Brown also still has 10 goals. Richards has 5.

Brown's minus is bad, -14. Granted, we all expect more from him, his contract was given because he captained two cups and is the longest standing King. He has only played for this organization. His contract doesn't bother me as much.

yet..

I hope Richards wins the Conn Smythe if only to shut Johnny Utah up for good.
