Mike Richards IV: Started From The Bottom, Still Here *MOD WARNING Post #194*

I thought the league was considering doing away with it a couple of years ago. I'm surprised people continue to refer to it as much as they do.

It's a useful stat when presented in the proper context, and not looked at in a vacuum.

Just like SV%

Example would be: There is a reason Dustin Brown this season is a -14. It has to due with turnovers (from Brown) and defensive breakdowns(Brown helps create) when he is on the ice. Just like there is a reason Jack Johnson is a minus player yearly.

In almost every case, you don't get to be a +20-something player by accident.

Same goes for -20-something players.

No I'm bitter because people are praising him in 2 games where has done nothing really.

I, and I'd imagine most others, tend to roll my eyes when I see praise for a player undeservedly. We likely sigh and may even just ignore the thread. You get bitter. How can you not see or admit you are just heavily biased against Richards for some reason. Did he hit on your wife or something?

I'm pretty sure he was a Simmonds fan. I remember someone mentioning that when I first came here.

Huge Simmonds fan.

The past three games should be obvious to anyone that Richards is done as an LA King and probably the NHL. Nolan and Clifford are way more noticeable.

Richards has played fine since his return, but let's face it #3 center is a position Dean should be looking to upgrade in the off season if he wants the Kings to remain as Stanley Cup contenders.

Agreed. Even if Richards is back to at least a 3rd line form, he's still vastly overpaid for that role.

I hope he targets someone with speed. A Pearson -XXX - Lewis line would be a welcome addition to what is largely a slow Kings squad.

This is just it.... Richards may be overpaid for a 3C behind Kopitar/Carter... but moving him while retaining salary, means that bringing in another 3C for around 3M with Richards retained salary is going to cost the same as Richards contract does anyways. So the Kings will have another Stoll/Ott type center... Which is a step down at the same cost.

I'm loving the Richards haters..... Sure looks like a bunch of guys were wrong about him ...

Edit: Is it 3-0 since Richards came back?

What some fail to recognize is that if Richards can be moved with some cap hit retained, or is bought out, which substantially reduces the cap hit of his contract over the next three seasons, then the Kings can add a #3 center that actually fits that role much better for the same cap hit.

Let me make that simple for some, SAME CAP HIT AS RICHARDS, BETTER #3 CENTER.

The best way for Dean to do that IMO is to hope Voynov is reinstated, then trade an NHL defenseman for a #3 NHL center that actually fits with the Kings' system on the #3 line.

It's really nothing against Richards or Stoll. Each of these two is simply lacking either the physicality and/or quickness/skating ability to get done what the Kings need from a #3 center long term.

Ditto. I've been saying that the retained salary will be mostly negated by the increase in cap. It's well worth retaining a big amount.

He's neither done nor amazing. Stop trolling with the binary polarities. Last warning about extremes, going straight to threadbans next.

I would say if that can't be done, even the buyout works, though not as well.

By the time the worst of what happens if a buyout occurs in terms of Ricards' cap hit, Kopitar will be 34, several other key pieces will be in their 30's, and the cap will have risen at least a little. Probably time for a re-tool at that point anyway.

This season and the next 3 seasons after this one are Doughty's prime years. Gotta make hay while the sun is shining IMO. Getting improved play from the #3 center position over the next few years would probably assist greatly in maintaining the Kings' position as a Stanley Cup contender over that period of time.

This right here.... the definition of better.... Kings don't need to trade for a 3C plug that may be a "better" fill for that role. They have Lewis... he would be fine at 3C if you aren't worried about production....

Or the "Better" would be to say put Richards at the 3C, because he has more offensive upside/experience then anything he's going to be replaced with, and get him a winger that can finish.

Keep in mind the Kings on the last cup run had the best offense in the playoffs... getting production out of 3 lines.... Throwing a plug like, today's version of Stoll, Lewis, isn't going to get this team where it needs to be to compete.

Also Richards coming back has had a huge impact. Andy is out of the line up and Shore is getting less exposure... Shore was starting to take bad penalties that were costing the Kings.
