Mike Richards IV: Started From The Bottom, Still Here *MOD WARNING Post #194*

If it ends up that Richards' issues are solely conditioning, that's both awesome and appalling at the same time.

I don't think it's a tin hat theory at all. The question will be, can Richards regain his form in the short time remaining this season? I have my doubts. One thing that Sutter will not allow is for a player to lose his check with the frequency that Richards was before he was sent to the AHL.

Kopitar
Carter
2012 Richards
Shore

is pretty deep down the middle. No other team could match that.

I agree with this. Richards was still good the following season. I have my doubts as well but if it doesn't work then I do think a buyout will be in play

I don't think it's conditioning really, but a focus on agility (regaining his first step). Williams said he focuses heavily on this in the offseason(if I recall correctly) since he has gotten older

Well, that's not something that can really be fixed midseason, not to the degree it would need to be anyway. But I agree, and his top speed seemed to be fine earlier on.

williams appears to have taken this offseason off, hah.

Lol it must be his conn smythe hangover

But since Richards isn't playing, in theory he could do it for 3-4 weeks and make significant gains. If he becomes a split second faster and clears out the cobwebs, then it would make all the difference in the world.

A lot of maybes but my quirky logic tells me that's what the Kings are doing with Richards. I think the AHL doesn't suit him well since it's 3 games in 3 days which doesn't provide good recovery if he was working on his agility.

It's all just my xfile gen thinking lol

This is exactly the problem. Somewhere down the line he lost his first step and top end speed.

Richards lost his first step as well but personally I would take his instincts over Stoll right now.

my tin hat theory is that Richards is in LA to put him on a plan to get him up to speed for the playoffs. This will make or break his career as a King. Some might not like it but it could pay dividends if he wakes up from the fog.

I dont think its just his first step. he was constantly bobbling the puck, losing his man/being caught out of position, and just generally looked like a soft version of his former self. I hope he can find his confidence, hes a truly great player when he has his **** together

I don't think Richards coming back will really matter all that much. With the Kings not having a Jennings level defense, they are going to have to score to be successful in the playoffs... that means they'll need 3 lines firing.... Stoll/Shore/Andy don't get that done.... Richards may be able to get that done... but hoping Richards is going to comeback and be productive in a lineup put together by Sutter... well that's a bit of a long shot...

One can only hope that this is the case. If Richards problem was truly conditioning, then it should show if/when he is recalled. It's a risk, because if he comes back up and it's more of the same, his value will bottom out.

As bad as Richards was playing, he still produced more offense than Stoll and Shore combined. He could potentially give the team a shot in the arm offensively.

It already did a long time ago. We can't pay people to take him.

Dude gets buried in the minors and no one in the NHL takes a chance on him and everyone is saying there is a second coming for Richards....lol.

Come on, this guy is toast. He won't come back and play like a star player just because he spent a month or so in the AHL. He has been treading down for awhile now. His days of an NHL player on the LA Kings are DONE. He will either be waived again and picked up, traded, bought out, or demoted to Ontario next year.

If Richards can't make a difference he won't be coming back for any portion of what remains in the regular season, or in the playoffs.

It's a big IF, but if he has regained some type of 4th line center form even, he can be a real asset for this team for the rest of this season. I have a lot of doubts though.

It's a joke that some here continue to question Sutter's handling of Richards. Please enlighten us, where should Richards be playing in the lineup to give maximum benefit to the team? Remember it's max benefit to the team, and not for Mike Richards benefit.

This would have been a moment for capgeek.

Here is what it looks like from the archive and would have happened 7/20/2014

So a 1,611,111 cap hit from now until the Zombie Apocalypse?

It's time to win now. I don't want to see the Kings waste any of Doughty's prime time winning years. The Kings have the best defenseman in the world along with a supporting cast that is very, very good. For the next three years the cap hit on a Ricahrds buy out is very manageable.

F the Zombie Apocalypse!

It looks like somebody is stockpiling a lot of food and ammo.

So says the guy who would walk away from Kopitar than give him a deal that would hurt the club maybe six years down the line. Which is it?

You don't do the buy out, you wait and see what is available in the off-season that lets you trade him and taking on a bad contract in return. Likely will cost us a good prospect or a roster player.

Quit trying to put words in my mouth. I said Kopitar isn't worth $9M a year for 8 seasons, and I don't think he will get that. I think he will be fair with Dean.

Your counter to that statement has always been that Dean will have to give Kopitar whatever he demands. Simply not true.

Obviously if Richards can be moved in a trade, it is better for the Kings. Go back and READ what I wrote. I said if Richards can't earn a spot in the Kings' organization on the NHL roster, or be traded, that the only option remaining is a buy out. Dean sure as hell isn't going to have a cap hit of over $4M on the books for an AHL player.

Also, I don't see how taking a bad contract in return is a good option when the Kings are in the "win now" mode. Better to either retain some of the cap hit or buy out the contract and take some lumps 4 years into the buy out when the salary cap has hopefully gone up some more. The time period for the buy out occurs only during the summer, so yes, Dean has to wait until the summer.

Still don't think Lombardi buy's out Richards. He may have had the ok from AEG, when it wiped the cap hit slate clean.

But that may have changed.

Think about this, it's 20 million dollars to say bye to Richards. The Yotes TOTAL operating losses for the year is 30 million (or about that).

Think about that for a minute.

So AEG is okay with paying 20 million to play in the AHL?
