Or Dean can buy out Richards this summer and the cap hit on his deal will be significantly reduced for the next 3 seasons, which are prime time for Stanley Cup contention for the Kings.

I don't think the Kings can take the risk of going forward next season with Richards or his contract. One way or another Richards will likely be gone next season.

he true cap hit cost though will be his cap hit plus the cost of whomever his replacement is. That person would need to be significantly better than Richards in order for LA to shoulder that cost.
I hope LA retains and trades. The salary retention should be less of a cap hit then the buy out, and would not last as long

Significantly better than Richards isn't saying much. His replacement who was a rookie with a couple games NHL experience was significantly better at a $5m a year smaller cap hit.

Unless the Kings are 110% sure that Richards can play a third line role next season he is gone from either trade or buyout, you can't have a $5m a year AHL center on the roster and seriously expect to contend, and this team will still be in a championship window.

I'll predict Richards trains under Apollo Creed during the summer in downtown LA. Footwork speed drills, boxing, swimming, running on the beach. Somewhere along the line Mike hits the wall, gives up and tells Apollo "tomorrow". Apollo gets upset, tells Mike "there is no tomorrow", then Mike talks to his wife about being afraid for the first time in his life, he's afraid. Then Mike's wife gives him a pump up speech, she's tough because she married a hockey player. Mike then discovers the eye of the tiger, starts training like he never has before eventually becoming a better athlete than Apollo Creed as they hug in the ocean in tank tops and short shorts but it's not homo erotic in any way, it's very masculine hugging and celebrating. Then Dean Lombardi trades Mike Richards to a team on the East Coast.

I've liked Shore but let's not get a carried away and call him a significant upgrade. He is what he is, a rookie 3rd/4th liner who has yet to kick in a goal in 20 games, is a minus player who sees under 10 minutes a game of ice time, almost none of which is on special teams, and his faceoff percentage is 46.2 per cent. All of those numbers are less than Richards. He's been good, I like him, but it's not like we replace Richards with Ryan Callahan or something.

Man, I can't wait to see the montage!!!

This is a time when statistics are not your friend. Shore's game is trending in the right direction, and any eye test will tell you that he is providing more than Richards was at the time of his demotion.

But Apollo gave up boxing to be a golfer, lost his hand to a gator and then fell out of a window and died. Richards will need to find the eye of the tiger on his own.

Is there any traction in thinking that if the Kings lose to Vancouver tonight and Winnipeg wins against Florida, we might see Richards in the line-up against Nashville on Saturday with Stoll or Shore (I know we all hope not on the latter) as a healthy scratch or is that even possible? I'm of course assuming that Richards is still in LA when the team returns early tomorrow morning.

I've liked what he brought, and frankly I'm not even saying he is or isn't better than Richards. I'm saying he not a significant improvement and to claim otherwise is simply wrong.

I don't see how the results of tonights game matter.

Richards gets back in the lineup when/if Dean and Sutter determine he is an improvement over Stoll or Shore. Don't see how what happens in a Florida/Winnipeg game matters.

Might just be coincidence, Tikkanen, I'm so proud of myself for hammering that video clip into peoples skulls a couple years ago during our first runs. It was my Das Horn.

No it's not wrong, it's a matter of opinion. Shore's skating is significantly better. Therefore, he is in position to support his wingers in the offensive zone and the defensemen in his own zone.

I don't need stats. Shore's play at this point in time is significantly better than Richards' play before he was sent down.

Just thinking that, in that scenario, Kings drop further back in the race and won't want to risk a loss to Nashville. Mind you, I've been trying to understand the thinking in flying Richards across the country, a month and a half after he was waived, missing 3 Manchester games, just to test his fitness. Unless they plan on keeping him here on a day to day basis depending on how the team fares. It's puzzling.

These are the cap hit figures on a Richards buy out if it occurs this summer. You can see that a buy out gives Dean a lot more flexibility over the next 3 seasons than having Richards on the roster. No doubt 2018-19 and 2019-20 are ugly, but it's the cost of doing business (winning cups) at this point and the result of a bad decision last summer. Everyone knows that a trade with some salary retention is desirable. Let's see if Dean can swing a deal, but if he can't his only option is a buy out IMO.

All dollars in millions
salary cap hit savings new cap hit
2015-16 6.00 5.75 4.78 0.97
2016-17 5.50 5.75 4.28 1.47
2017-18 4.50 5.75 3.28 2.47
2018-19 3.00 5.75 1.78 3.97
2019-20 3.00 5.75 1.78 3.97
2020-2027 -1.22 1.22
total 22.00 28.75

Buyout total (2/3) $14.67M
spread over 12 yrs 1.22

maybe he will train Richards from a cloud with Lincoln and said gator

In no way is a 10 minute per game player a significant upgrade on anyone. Nick Shore wouldn't be a significant upgrade on Raitis Ivanans. Going from Dan Cloutier to Jonathan Quick, that's a significant upgrade.

He just needs to tell Richards to find his happy place.

As I said, Shore is trending in the right direction. His minutes, the responsibilities that Sutter is giving him are all increasing. Stoll now is trending in the wrong direction after pretty much treading water earlier in the season, and Richards was trending in the wrong direction for quite some time.

Shore is a significant upgrade over Richards at this point in time. Give Sutter a player that he can trust, and Sutter will figure out a way to maximize that player's effectiveness and impact on the game.

What's your argument going to be when Shore starts getting 15 minutes a game?

Stoll makes just over 3 million and is a UFA.

Richards makes 5.75 million and has 5 more years.

That's an issue right there.

Can't wait until the Kings call Richards up for the playoffs.

Gonna call the police over to your house to have you put on suicide watch.

Very entertaining read. But all jokes aside, if I was Mike Richards I would check myself into some kind of work-out resort where they regulate everything you eat and make you work out every day.

I am surprised that Sutter has kept Shore up for so long. It says a lot. I remember Toffoli was constantly brought up and down before he became a regular. Pearson as well.

Find that gator, put it in a pot, add some broth, a potato, and baby, you've got a stew goin'.
