He is just overused. He isn’t a bad top 4 guy, just not a #1 and that is how he currently is used. When a player is not in his chair, this is often what happens.

Yeah sure, he fell and turned it over yesterday because he was overused.
The reality is he's never been used less than he's been used this year with the Habs and he hasn't been better, heck, he's probably even worse.
He plays 15 minutes a game at 5v5, thats less than Hutson and Guhle and only 5 seconds more than Savard since the start of the year.
We need to stop that narrative. He is playing less right now, he's just as bad.

Ya, were thin as f*** because were using a career bottom pair D as #1-3, depending on the game.
You know what's a very solution to the ice time problem? It starts with P and ends with P. 3 minutes + per game to reward good vets like Matheson. Love it.
Gutless or brainless or a little bit of both.

There’s nothing I get because I’m well aware he’s not a top pairing Dman (nor is he a bottom pair D)
I just don’t have the same illusions as you do that there is one currently in the organization that is, whose he’s playing ahead of.
But you’re certainly free to bang your head against the wall acting like there is.

Is it his fault he’s playing a role he’s not suited for?
Guhle’s hurt a lot of the time and he doesn’t play the PP, Hutson is 12 games into his NHL career.
There are a lot of problems on this team, Matheson just doesn’t rank very high, for me, as it relates to HIS play, it’s more to do with the fact that he’s asked to play a role he’s not suited for.
That’s not his doing.

My solution was adding a vet that's not a paper tiger like Matheson, someone the kids can actually look up to. Hughes decided to sit down and double down on his pet-client because that's what we do in the foxhole.
Matheson shouldn't play PP1.
Matheson shouldn't be on the ice when we need a goal.
Matheson should be leaned on at the detriment of playing younger players.
Matheson shouldn't be kept beyond this year because he has no value to us.

That’s not a solution, it’s a vague idea, one that I’m sure Hughes would love to do but it’s not like those players are available or easily acquired.
I’m asking you what’s your internal solution right now? Who else are you going to give those minutes too? Struble? Xhekaj? They can barely handle the minutes they’re getting.
Right now it’s what they have, for better or for worse.
Matheson can and has played much better than he has this season, at some point he’ll get moved and the better he plays, the better that return will be.
Matheson on PP1 or PP2…whatever, potatO / PotAto.
Matheson has a lot of value to the Habs and would have to other teams given his contract and ability to eat minutes and be productive (whether you legitimize that or not, facts are facts).
