Just to add--it was an optional practice so I don't think any contact is involved. Suspect they'll wait to see how he feels after a full practice.
They should have the long view here. I could care less if he misses 20 games as long as when he comes back, he is fully ready to go. The team is not really going places this year. No need to rush him.

From Stephenson:

I asked Mika if he could tell us what the injury was. He declined.
"I don't want to go into details, but I think you guys can figure out -- it was an upper body, so, I'm not going to go into more details than that.''

this doesn’t sound like a concussion to people?

No

Nimmo had a neck injury that he had to play through and ended making it worse that he had to be shut down for months.

Neck, Collar Bone, Dislocated shoulder are the other "upper body" injuries besides the classic concussion. If it WAS a concussion and the team has stated it wasn't then they would face penalties from the league for that. Much bigger penalty to hiding a concussion and getting caught then hiding a concussion for "player value"

Don’t think they’re hiding anything from the league offices because it’s not a rule like it is in the nfl.

but his response doesn’t sound at all like it fits what you’re saying. If it was a funny neck injury he wouldn’t say you guys can obviously figure it out. That doesn’t make sense when everyone was very confused by it.

Lol think you’re being stubborn here come on if it were a weird neck thing he wouldn’t say:

I think you guys can obviously figure it out. I don’t want to say anything more than upper body.
I am not being subborn. I am going from what our insiders reported and what has now been written in the papers. There nothing that anyone has said or done that has hinted at it being other than what it is. Bruised sternum and whiplash.

Sounds like a nasty injury he doesn't want to talk about. People read what they want to read. Nothing says it's a concussion except people who jump to conclusions

doesnt explain why he would say you guys obviously can figure it out when no one can figure it out and everyone is confused by what took so long and why there was a setback not to mention the clear evidence of him taking a shoulder to the chin.

guy with a history of concussions. The most obvious option is usually the correct one. If this were some random magical neck strain injury that would be weird frankly.

Isn't Mika literally asking for people to use their intuition and figure it out? Like, upper body injury, guy out indefinitely, most people generally assume concussion. Zibanejad suffers upper body injury, is out indefinitely, most people assumed concussion. And then when asked, he says, "It's upper body, I think you guys can figure it out"? Sure, definitely possible it's not a concussion, but that would be an awfully weird way to answer the question to dispel the belief that it was.

Anyway, concussions and neck injuries can have identical side effects, so I'm not sure if it really matters which it was.

Well we can’t say for certain that it isn’t a concussion. I feel like if it was a whiplash/stiff neck type of injury, he would have been over the effects already. On the bright side, his return is imminent.

Exactly.

except for the last part. It does matter because of his history and the concern for his future. Can he get back to being the player he was? We’ve seen a lot of guys have their careers derailed by concussions. He was really having his coronation as a top center in this league. Just sucks for him and the franchise if this becomes a major set back for him.

Except he did not suffer a concussion.

Jesus Christ, I think at this point if he said it was a God Damn neck injury, people still wouldn't believe it because it would be something he was told to say.

If he's not trying to say concussion I have no idea what he's trying to say.

Don't teams generally frown on players disclosing their injuries to the media when the team itself has elected not to?

That doesn't make it a concussion or not a concussion, but I assume it's why he's not saying what it is.

I doubt they'd admonish him for saying it's a concussion (a policy that we've never heard to be in place), but then look the other way if he's supposedly all but saying it's a concussion.

If the dude's going to be in trouble for saying it's a concussion, then he's going to be in trouble for that type of answer. They wouldn't magically be okay with alluding to a concussion, so I doubt he'd feel the need to get in just as much trouble.

At that point, the reaction would be the same.
