I don't know how anyone can envision Mika being on this team past his current contract. He is just too injury prone to be relied on long-term moving forward; sad but true. He's on a great contract right now, but he absolutely cannot be penciled in as a top center for this team past his contract--and the decision to trade him before it is up (as we have been doing with all players when it comes time) will be here before we know it.
Those that would keep him: what's going to happen when we have him as our #1 center (on hopefully a competitive team) and he is out inevitably for extended periods of time? While still paying him a ridiculous amount he will receive on his next contract? Everyone else in our center depth moves up? He is just not one to be relied on, and one we should not be investing in long-term. The evidence has been on full display since he joined us.
'Who will play center??' will probably be the most common response to this, and I honestly do not know. We will have to explore in the draft this year, and potentially with trading him, Skjei, other D prospects in our system, to fill our center pipeline.
'But every player is one hit away from an injury' will be another. True, yest. But it's getting to the point where I cringe whenever Mika is hit, and I knew as soon as he took that hit in the Bruins game he was hurt. Did not think this bad, but that just adds to my point here.
I am BEYOND GLAD he was not named captain, as rumored before the start of the season. He is just someone that will not (and should not) be apart of this team long-term. Love him as a player--was thrilled when we acquired him--but the sooner we come to terms that he will not be apart of this team in the long run, the better. Trade options will need to be explored, and will need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
Again, love Mika, want him to succeed here--but it is evident he is not that franchise center moving forward.
