Hey Colorado fan coming here in peace - what’s up with Bol Bol? I was really glad when I was starting to see the Pistons giving him minutes and finally an opportunity. Looking at his game logs he started to get up to 30 mins a night and now lately he’s back to the teens. What the heck happened? Have the Pistons soured on him?

I don't know but I just want to point out that he's with Orlando not Detroit

I guess you saw that the Pistons traded for him but missed that he failed his physical and that trade got cancelled?

I don't follow the NFL too closely but I'm seeing a lot of talk about the Lions potentially acquiring Lamar Jackson. What's everyone think?

That would be a disaster.

1) Goff has played at a very high level the last 1.5 seasons. And I say that as somebody who's not a Jared Goff fan. But the guy has the stats to prove he's getting it done, and at a significantly cheaper rate than Lamar Jackson would cost.

2) Even if cost were not a factor, Jackson can't throw from the pocket. He's a running back that also throws short passes - and tends to get hurt more often because of how often he runs.

Don't blow up your salary cap to add a headache. Use those dollars to add some free agents on defense, have another good draft, and go chase the division title with the QB you already have.

I follow the NFL less than you apparently. Who the f*** is Lamar Jackson?
Fabulous running QB with the Baltimore Ravens.

If it was just signing him at a price close to his franchise tag number (35 million), I wouldn't hate it.

However, since he's franchise tagged, it's two firsts along with that contract for a guy who is electric but also frequents the injury room.

First answer segues to this one. I'd pass. Goff is actually a plus QB and if you want a stud runner like Jackson, I'd just throw in with the Florida Gator's Anthony Richardson (by trading up from 18OA with some other stuff after they pick a good, non-Anthony Richardson player at 6OA. Way cheaper and both are very shifty and good runners but kind of suspect as passers, even though they've got rocket arms.

I’d make the trade for Jackson and give him the guaranteed money before I could blink.

It’s actually a bewilderingly good opportunity that has fallen into our lap and, frustratingly, we won’t take advantage of it.

If you want to draft Richardson you’re not doing it by trading up from #18 imo - you’re hoping he’s there at #6.

The only way I would do a deal for Lamar is if I could negotiate a supremely cheap trade before committing the money to him. I have no interest in Lamar if signing him while on this non-exclusive tag. Giving up $200+ million of guaranteed money and draft picks is not good business for the way the Lions are building this.

I am more likely to give Goff $45 million annually with $175 million guaranteed and performance incentives for the next 5 years than I am to sign Lamar on this tag he's on.

He simply is not good enough as a passer and far to much of a health risk to warrant that type of investment. So yeah, I would want him on my team, but the means by which I want him are not great enough for it to be a realistic possibility.

When I saw ESPN naming the Lions as a more likely suitor, I just thought they needed some more fluff for their clickbait stuff. There is no fit (1.), no need (2.) and no realistic possibility (3.) to acquire Jackson:

1.
The Lions had a very good offense last year with Goff as typical dropback-QB, who defers to two good RBs for the rush. Their most productive RB is a FA, but the Lions want to extend him and the player would love to stay. The OC has been rewarded with a huge raise, because his offense system works. The Lions also need their top draft picks to bolster their lousy defense. Jackson would cost draft picks and bring a totally different element as primarily rushing QB.

2.
Goff has been one of the best QBs last year. He has been improving since former OC Lynn was fired and built up good chemistry with the receivers.

3.
Replacing Goff with Jackson would cost more than $ 10m salary cap space. The Lions aren't even able to re-sign their better FAs plus this year's draftees yet, so this swap is not really feasible anyway.

Yeah the Jackson to Detroit stuff is pretty stupid imo. Goff has found his form in Detroit and the "upgrade" to Lamar isnt worth the cap hit, forget about multiple first round picks

The level at which Lamar Jackson is a "suspect passer" is not even remotely close to the same stratosphere of Anthony Richardson levels of being a "suspect passer"

That being said, I've been brushing off rumors and plans of replacing Goff for the last two years. I think he's a good QB and its not easy to upgrade on him, but Lamar Jackson is a guy I'd actually consider it for, but I don't pay attention enough to the NFL cap to know where it would really leave us

It's not that it's offensive to think Lamar Jackson, despite his struggles the last few years, might be better than Jared Goff.

It's that Lamar Jackson is absolutely not worth more than the combination of:
* Goff
* At least one quality free agent signing
* Two first round picks

Trading for Lamar means you're pretty much running back the same rest of the roster. Sticking with Goff means you have tons of options to continue to improve the team around him.

The difference between the two is that Richardson is a developmental piece on a rookie deal. Lamar would cost multiple picks and closer to $50 million per year with most of it guaranteed. The levels of suspect passing are irrelevant when one costs the franchise every ounce of flexibility it has and the other is a lottery ticket.

For me, and I think this is increasingly unpopular among Lions fans, but once we give Goff that extension (which I think we will), and once Ben Johnson leaves for a HC gig after this year (which I think he will), then we’re kinda toast. Not toast like Quintricia era Lions, but toast like we become the new Cousins era Vikings, who no one in the NFL has ever really feared as a serious contender.

It’s far from the worst outcome. I think Goff can definitely win you a playoff game or two, and I’d cry tears of joy to see the Lions win a playoff game. But I don’t think anyone in the NFL who is serious about winning Super Bowls gives Goff that extension next summer.

I think we should draft Stroud but that’s probably just me.

I disagree, in the sense that they're building a team where Goff isn't the only QB that could be successful here. He's doing a much better job than I expected and I give him full credit for playing at a high level. But I think if Detroit continues with this plan, they'll have a very good roster around him, and could get a few more very good years out of either another veteran or a kid they draft soon and stash for a bit.

I am a little concerned about Ben Johnson leaving to be a Head Coach somewhere. But at the same time, this comes up all of the time any time we have a coordinator be not terrible.

The last lions coordinator to actually leave to be a head coach somewhere is _____________________
