This line of reasoning is exactly why we are where we are currently... Never good enough to win it all yet never bad enough to sell... And a team with ZERO in the pipeline.

Keep on keepin on
Which is why this team is not only the least successful out of all of the original teams in the league, it is less successful than many newer ones. Always living in the nether region. One would think that winning one Cup in 77 would have taught the franchise a lesson every now and then.

Which is why I firmly believe that while this franchise would like to win a Cup... the overall mentality and culture is geared more like a business... i.e. to sell tickets (notice I didn't say put ***** in seats, completely different) and earn revenue.

While yes a Cup would go a long way towards increasing that revenue, they run the team like a business... which isn't to say that is a bad thing, in this climate it is a necessity.

But getting into the play-offs and maybe winning a round is very different from taking a step back one year to make a leap forward 1, 2, 3 years and/or beyond.

This franchise never has a problem "Going for it" but they show little if any degree of concern for a year or two from now.

Maybe that changes under Gorton but I doubt it will... if ONLY for the pressure he's no doubt under to "at least maintain".

Great post... As long as ur intent was to show how and why this team won't be winning a cup anytime soon.

Idea being we won't sell until we are legit out of it... Which means we probably wouldn't have a Grabner to sell. We won't be legit out of it with Hank here.

So we either buy (expending assists) or hold onto assets that we could turn into something of use next year and beyond.

Of course but I also think there are a lot of factors that aren't really taken into account by the fans. If you're in the front office how do you explain to Henrik Lundqvist that you just sold the team's leading goal scorer at the deadline for pieces that might be good two - three years from now? Ryan McDonagh? When there's only four other teams with better records right now? When we're two points behind Columbus who were demolishing the entire league a few weeks ago? It's well and good to talk about how we don't have a "championship defense" and that may be true but it's a lot harder explaining that to professional athletes who think they're giving their all to win a championship.

Hockey players aren't stupid and I don't think there's any executive that wants to go into sell mode when his team is fifth in the standings and his guys are putting their bodies on the line every night. I know it's not basketball where players have an absurd amount of pull but I do think that element plays into it and is not considered by the fanbase.

I also think that, as you said, the business side of it is big, especially for this team right now. Remember that the Rangers are Dolan's saving grace right now. Anyone listen to Kay's interview with Dolan? After Dolan finished explaining how he gave Phil carte blance and told the angry fans to "ask Phil" he was asked if he's just as hands-off with the Rangers and claimed that he has a lot more input with the Rangers then he does with the Knicks. Obvious attempt to make himself look better (I left the Knicks alone and they're terrible, I still talk to my Rangers guys and they're great) but you have to remember that this is how these guys think. Forget about the added playoff revenue which is another huge consideration.

Serious question: look at the top ten teams in the league right now. Do you think any of those GM's are going to be in sell mode at the deadline? I don't. Maybe a team like St. Louis if they break into the top ten? But considering how well they've been playing lately it's just as likely they consider themselves "turned around" and make another push.

What about last year? Here's a list of the top ten teams in points on this date last year: http://dropyourgloves.com/Games/AnyDateStandings.aspx?Date=2016-2-14&League=1. Did any of those teams sell currently valuable assets for futures?

You and I are on the same page often.

They would like to win a cup but they are a business first and that is how things are prioritized. There is nothing really wrong with that, just have to acknowledge the top priority is not necessarily to win championships.

Or you could argue that we are the 4th or 5th most successful team in the past 5 years or so. Besides Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA and possibly Boston, which teams have been more successful than the NYR. Winning championships is the goal, but rooting for a team and enjoying the ride is a part of it too.

Which team other than the ones I named would you trade the last 5 seasons with?

"The franchise" isn't a sentient being.

I may be in the minority but I don't think this team should trade Grabner unless it's for a mid first rounder. This team's forward group is much better than last year and the defence has allowed the 7th fewest goals in the league. Not saying this team is the favourite but they are 5th in the NHL for a reason. Grabner could be a difference maker in the playoffs with his speed and defence. And the team is still very young. Who cares if the pipeline is empty. It's not like we have a bunch of 30 year olds...

77 years.......1 Cup

Rooting for a team and enjoying the ride is not a metric that measures how successful a franchise is.

Possibly, but I truly feel sorry for you if the only way you can get enjoyment out of rooting for a team is for that team to win a championship....

Looking at your team realistically and being able to enjoy them are mutually exclusive of each other.

I've been through a lot of joy with the Rangers over the decades. It definitely would have been even sweeter with one or two additional SCs thrown in, but the joy for me has always been in the journey.

Remember when many of us were clamoring for us to trade Grabner while his value was sky high?

yeah..

too late now.

sigh.

i bet we could have gotten a first for him. non expiring contract, doesnt have to be protected if they dont want to, and was at like 25 goals or whatever at the time.

so incredibly short sighted.

yep........

idk man this front office. I love Gorton but... damn

Which is why you don't even have to look past the top of this very page to see a bunch of guys who wanted to get something for that asset.

I like Grabs a lot and love the speed he brings, but again, as the playoffs get close and there is less and less time and space to be had, our "elite" offense dries up. Grabs isn't getting 1-2 breakaways every game.

Why not?

Grabner has always gotten breakaways. The difference is that he finished them for half this season. Should've struck while the iron was hot. Grabner was not brought here for his goals, he was brought here for his speed and PK'ing. That we had a chance to trade him after an unsustainable streak is lucky, and we didn't take advantage of it.

I feel like the shootout has messed with his head

Cinderella turned into a pumpkin right after the trading deadline  Oh well, hope he goes on another hot streak in the first round

He needs to go play on the 4th line at this point. No reason to keep him in the top 9. Need to rethink that 3rd line. Clearly Hayes and Grabner aren't producing as they did earlier this season.

It feels like we can ice 3 fourth lines at the moment. Man, I miss the November Rangers where we has 3 second lines haha
