You want to protect 1 year of Grabner who is 29 over 4 years of Stepan who is 26? Wow. Just, wow.
Yes, I do. I knew i would get bashed, i dont care 1 year or not, we need to extend him. He easily is up there for team mvp and no sign of slowing down.
I could see us without Stepan, not so much Grabs.

I disagree. Stepan is younger and will provide more overall as a good defensive center who can still put up points pretty well. Grabner is awesome and fast but he is also older. We cannot afford to lose centers right now.

but it just seems to me that soon we will not be able to afford some of our other players and trading Stepan eventually equalling out that shiny new expensive defenseman.

This is satire, correct?
Yeah, i get it.....Stepan lovers. Lets face it, no one knows how this will all end up with the expansion pick et' al. Pittsburgh may be losing Fleury, and i think their fans dont care at this point.
My point is every team will lose a player, we just happen to be a deep team and will lose a "key player" for nothing, unless we do something.

he is definitely worth protecting for next year, but he is not going to be able to keep this up long term

in the last 2 years he had a total of 17 goals, im not saying he isnt the mvp of the team this year because he is but to think he will keep this up for 3-4 years is insane. I would love to be proven wrong but I just dont see it

We can't protect him without giving up arguably more important players.

If you truly believe Grabner is a key player (which implies he will be this way, or better, moving forward) I really don't know what to tell you.

We're not losing Stepan to expansion.

The very concept is too ridiculous to even bother discussing.

Yeah, we may be screwed, but this is why we have to make a trade that could include Stepan. We HAVE TO protect Grabs over Stepan imo. Grabs is a game changer and makes considerably less right now.

Staying put is not going to happen, key would be figuring out how we will approach doing what we have to do on the back end. Getting Shatty NOW, will hurt as opposed to later, but we could lose him to Boston. Wonder how much he wants to be here. Has one year left on contract, right?

And yeah, id rather have all that excitement this year......cant and shouldnt attempt to rebuild now. We are closer than ever.

Yeah ... nah.

Obviously not a key player but Grabner would be a massive loss. Kinda how Hagelin was.

3 guys most likely to lose are Grabner, Holden, Raanta. No sure which one I'd prefer to lose.

To me, it's between Fast, Grabner, Holden and Raanta. One of these guys will get picked by Las Vegas.

I honestly think because of their past inconsistencies, and ages, that neither Grabner or Holden will get picked. Grabner also has 1 year left after this one. I don't think Vegas would want to take a player that can bolt after a year.

It's probably going to be between Fast and Raanta.

I just want to know if we still love Grabner when he stops shooting like 27% and goes back to his usually poor career averages

I was told it's because he gets all breakaways now. He figured out how to breakaway at 29.

This is like how Klein shot 20% for 18 months and now can't score, and everyone thinks he's sucks. Amazing what happens to perception when the goals dry up for some time.

As long as he can still be great at PKing and disrupting opposing puck possession, I don't care if he goes down to career SH%

He had about 2,000 breakaways in Toronto, converted about 4 of them. Love what he's doing for this team this season, but let's not pretend it's sustainable eh? Perfect analogy to Kleiner, he had that sweet spot that he scored 7 or 8 goals from over that year and a half.

His possession numbers are pretty poor FWIW and he's really not that great of a PKer either, imo. He puck watches a lot. I wouldn't say he's lazy but he lacks the awareness of an elite PKer

That is something we desperately lacked last season on our PK

Grabs has looked so great its hard to believe he is the same guy that played all these previous seasons. Is this season a fluke or did something click for him to find his scoring touch for good?
