If you get a 1st round pick for Grabner, you take it. There's no reason not to. There are other players every year in free agency that can do what he does. It's just that our mindset has changed since Gorton took over. A different style and signing different players has resulted into our team having more speed. Look at the forward depth we have this season...

Sure there is. We're trying to win a cup, or make a run, not stockpile picks. We are comfortably in a playoff spot and shouldn't be selling off assets. It doesn't send a good message to the team.

Value wise, yeah we probably should.. but as much as everyone ranks on how terrible this team is I still only fear one team in the East and that is Pittsburgh.

Last season was a year to sit back and not do anything. The team was 100% a mirage. Staal trade was just awful. This year though, the team has the forward depth to make a run, just need to upgrade the D. That doesn't mean trying to get a Jacob Trouba or Kevin Shattenkirk, but a Nick Holden type. Pick + prospect for a D-man. Ride the forward depth and try to win. Don't give up the season by trading assets.

Being in a play off spot doesn't make us a contender. We are not 1 move away from contending either.

Yeah I'm sure no Penguins fans thought they were a contender in early January last year.

It's amazing to me how quickly people are ready to throw the season away, it's honestly sad.

You mean to tell me we can't beat Montreal and say.. Ottawa in the first two rounds? Then we're in the Conference Final and we have our shot. Personally I'd rather lose in the CF with no added picks than lose in Round 1 but add some DRAFT PICKS!

I value the team making a run, giving us that excitement in the spring. I'm not selling off assets.. we have RFAs who are about to be paid and we're gunna get screwed out of our depth in expansion draft... I don't see how the team is better next year than we are now.. keep our players, add a defenseman and take another shot.

I know u said that in jest, because I thought of that as well. I think it would be illegal. Bribery to the mighty Vegas owner....."please don't take my guy! I'll give u a draft pick......okay?"

Don't think it was in jest. Feel like it was allowed previously. They're taking one player, that's a given. Why wouldn't they try and get the best deal they could?

Isn't it 7 forwards? Nash, Stepan, Zucc, Kreider, JT, Zibby, Hayes.

There are 2 options when it comes to protection:

7F, 3D and 1G
8 skaters and 1G

if we decide to protect 8 forwards, McDonagh will be gone. We can protect 7 forwards.

Nash is automatically protected with his clause. That leaves 6 spots.

Stepan, Zuccarello, Kreider, Miller, Hayes, Zibanejad

Are you seriously comparing our team to Pens? Pens has Malkin, Letang, Kessel, Crosby and Murray who was a complete beast in the playoffs last season. They have some of the best players in the world and when they get going, nothing can really stop them.
They dont have alot of depth on defense but its easily better than ours. They dont have Girardi and they have Letang who imo is a top 5 defensemen in the NHL when healthy. I would easily trade Grabner if we can get something good for him instead of losing him in the expansion draft. No chance we are winning with Girardi playing as much as he is. Said it last year when i wanted us to trade Yandle aswell. This team want to win, lets make the right moves to make sure we have a great shot at winning the next 5-6 years and not just be a mediocre playoff team for 2 more years.
We have gotten worse every year since we got to the final. Zibanajad trade was a fantastic trade which helps us be competetive going forward. It would suck if Hank doesnt get a cup but i 100% believe that if we make the right moves the next two seasons we will have a much bigger chance at winning in 3 years than we have this season. We are not a legit contender at all imo.

Vegas will not take 1 year of grabner vs taking a younger rfa like fast soooo don't worry

I am not worried. I think they will probably go for either a younger player, or Holden. The younger player could be anyone else aside from Buchnevich, Skjei, Graves, Vesey or any other 1st or 2nd year pro.

They might even go for Raanta

Yeah, we may be screwed, but this is why we have to make a trade that could include Stepan. We HAVE TO protect Grabs over Stepan imo. Grabs is a game changer and makes considerably less right now.

Staying put is not going to happen, key would be figuring out how we will approach doing what we have to do on the back end. Getting Shatty NOW, will hurt as opposed to later, but we could lose him to Boston. Wonder how much he wants to be here. Has one year left on contract, right?

And yeah, id rather have all that excitement this year......cant and shouldnt attempt to rebuild now. We are closer than ever.

You want to protect 1 year of Grabner who is 29 over 4 years of Stepan who is 26? Wow. Just, wow.

I disagree. Stepan is younger and will provide more overall as a good defensive center who can still put up points pretty well. Grabner is awesome and fast but he is also older. We cannot afford to lose centers right now.

This is satire, correct?

Protecting Grabner over Stepan would be incredibly dumb. If Gorts decides we need to keep LV from selecting Grabs, he can make a trade with them before expansion draft. A 2nd/3rd rd pick to not select Grabner.

You're correct. I mistakenly thought we could protect 8 forwards and 3 D.

Nice article by Brooks on Grabner and the expansion draft. http://nypost.com/2017/01/09/each-goal-by-rangers-revelation-is-an-expansion-draft-headache/
