I think I can agree; a lot of how we view this trade will be on how the prospects/players Grier picked up work out. If Mukhamadullin turns into a top-4 D, Zetterlund is a consistent top-6 threat, and the Sharks draft well with the picks they get, then it'll be seen as a win.

This is a take that may age poorly, but I also think Meier is practically exiting his prime right now. I don't think he's a player you want locked-up long-term.

I get the sense Timo may have injury issues as he gets older. NJ did add the condition that Timo play 50% of the games if they make the ECF, but that could have been put in because of his current injury.

Well I mean, why not throw in Nemec and Hughes to that package as well? Just because you wanted more, doesn’t mean it was an available package
New Jersey is going to waste Holtz just like they shit the bed with Tedenby,Josefson and Bergfors! As for Nemec well I guess he slots in next year after Severson leaves via UFA land! Is he ready well I guess we'll find next season and beyond! As for Hughes he'll be looking to play in Jersey and we'll see how that develops

Still don’t understand the 24 1st. What’s the condition, and if said condition isn’t met do we get a lower pick instead or nothing?
They upgrade from a 2nd to a 1st if the Devils make the conference finals in the next two seasons and Meier plays half the games. Basically a reimagined playoff success/re-sign condition.

Meier only needs to play half the games in '23. The '24 ECF condition applies whether or not Meier is with the team.

Given how hard it is to make the CF (look at how many times the Sharks have made it with a stacked team), the upgrade is far from a done deal.

This evaluation of the trade makes me feel a little bit better... I'm still pretty underwhelmed at the moment and we'll see how the picks pan out... Its just hilarious how obvious it is that we are rebuilding and I wish the team will be straight up with the fanbase about it... We may very well be a lottery team for multiple years and the boatload of picks are what people on this board have been asking for (including myself) for multiple years.

I think its just pretty disappointing when the nicest thing anyone can say about the best prospect is that he might somehow be able to overcome significant challenges and become a second pairing D

Its a second unless they make the eastern confrence final and timo plays.

So more a conditional second than a first
I actually don’t know what the official semantics are, but I like the “conditional first” wording better and it makes more sense to me. A 1st if the said conditions are met. It’s a guaranteed 2nd at worst.

Yeah but the tank is 100% on which could now more likely net a future franchise cornerstone player is the other glass half full perspective... I'm going to call it "Fail for Fantilli" & "Crash for Carlsson" as they now feel more likely.

I would not be disappointed in the return in case if Meier was going UFA, but nothing was forcing Grier to execute this deal yet.
You are giving your best player... for this.
Mike Grier has a long road to go, to become a good GM.

I think Bedard or Fantilli could save this "retool", but barring that I just think we are on a crash course for Arizona Coyotes land.

SJS reported it as a conditional 1st. NJD reported it as a conditional 2nd. League also reports this as a conditional 2nd.

When one side needs to embellish the return, it's a clear tell who the loser was.

GMMG: "Call it a tank but don't call it a rebuild"

Was it Steve Jobs who said he'd take a home run over two doubles? Mike Grier, oh how I wish you'd read his playbook!

Really disappointed - not by the move (which was expected), or even the underwhelming level and projection of the prospects involved... but the mindset of how MG wants to team build.

I'm a realist - if Timo wasn't going to be signed long term, I suspect perhaps Mike feels he got a good slice here. But realistically, unless SM becomes a dependable, contributing Top 4 NHLer, this one has the potential to look and stay bad for a long time.

I get the feeling Mike knows how to round out the bottom of a solid NHL roster. Sadly, I'm not sold he realises how he's going to have to fill the top half of it.

FWIW, I now wouldn't dream of trading EK65. Shame- he's clearly at the top of his game and his asset value will never be higher than it is right now for the Sharks. But because I simply have no faith in Grier to turn it into anything of meaningful value.

4 lines of 4th liners is GMMG's vision of a great hockey team.

It's not as bad as people are making it, but the conditions on the 1st/2nd and us retaining salary shows that Grier was not the person commanding the conversation by any means. The salary retention makes no difference to us but we gave them a kicker in an already prudent trade for NJ, not a fleece but not a great return, more like an okay return with high hopes.

We all knew it was an underwhelming return for Brent Burns but Sharks had no leverage and everyone wanted to do right by Burns. Wasn't appropriate to judge GMMG then.

For Meier, Sharks held all the leverage including an option to extend for 1 year. GMMG bombs the trade unless Meier somehow comes back and re-signs with the Sharks (unlikely given that it was reported Meier wants the security of an additional year). Boggles my mind how the 2024 condition couldn't even get tied in with a contract extension. Granted, this is purely from a value perspective - no one knows how the prospects are going to pan out.
