We have to remember that this is one step in a series of steps that Grier is trying to pull to fix this franchise which is in honestly a horrific place. We have one surefire prospect; Eklund. I have high hopes for Bordeleau, Gush, Bystedt and Havelid but they’re still big question marks. This was a good move to shore up some prospects and get a very young, high end 3rd liner who might be a 2nd liner if he keeps developing.

There are more moves in the future. Grier bluntly said he thinks there’ll be more opportunity to trade Karlsson in the off-season; more picks, more prospects, ideally.

Our cap space issues are starting to ease up with these moves and it means we have the potential to lure a free agent or two here.

All this to say: he’s simultaneously trying to undo the horrible place we were in and rebuild us into some semblance of a team. I think these moves are good - but I think by the draft — and possibly maybe end of summer — we can really evaluate the direction of this team and how good Grier is doing. We can’t really look at these moves in a vacuum - this is a work in progress.. we are a terrible team with a bare cupboard that’s finally being replenished.

Some worthwhile info on Mukhamadullin from last month, from the Devils' assistant GM, that was behind a paywall (sourced from Reddit):

“Yeah, he’s definitely coming over when his KHL season wraps up with Ufa,” MacKinnon said of Mukhamadullin. “He’s signed already. Plan is to get him right in with Utica – hopefully on a nice playoff run there. We’re really excited about him. We watch all his games on video, but the only people that can see him live are guys in Russia like Sergei Nemchinov (Devils scout) because we can’t get people in and out of Russia, scouting wise. What we see and what we hear is that he’s taken another big step this year. We hope he comes over, adjusts quickly. We expect big things and for him to be an impact guy right away.”

I don't know any of these prospects, so I don't know if I can have an opinion on this trade. With that said, I feel sad and depressed. Are any of these players ready to play in the NHL tonight or next year? WIth the way the Sharks draft, we probably won't see how good this trade is until like 3 years from now at the earliest. You trade a top player in the league for what you hope might work in 3 years. Kinda hard to be excited about that.
Zetterlund and Johnsson will for sure be in the lineup immediately. I think Okhotiuk could step in immediately but they might keep him in the AHL. Mukhamadullin is close to NHL ready. I’d expect him in the NHL by the end of next year or beginning of the season after depending on how he adjusts.

Now Johnsson just has to step into the lineup and have two killer games and get someone to trade for him on Friday.

Yeah the plan was set in stone that he would come over next year. He played some AHL games for us last year.

Kid puts up impressive numbers in the KHL for someone his age. He should turn into a top 4 D

Sure and I want a unicorn. Karlsson has played himself into maybe tradable (with retention)

Nobody is taking Vlasic.
I wasn't thinking about trading off Pickles. I'd ask him to chill on LTIR and then offer him

To go off and open Daisey Hill Puppy farm and rescue

We should get a decent return for Karlsson.

Can someone tell me how to feel?
I’d say fine. It would’ve been nice to get a piece that would jump start the rebuild, but I guess Grier couldn’t get that. So the Sharks are still about 4 or 5 years and high level players away from contention.

Trade for prospects and players that can make an impact sooner rather than later? You still have to build a team, and how long is that team going to suck? I agree it is a mess. What am I expecting as a Sharks fan for the next few years, or is it just not worth my time, in which case I can easily say F U D W?
Expect a retool that’s closer to a rebuild. Grier is planning on bringing in some NHL players it appears (Greenway, Fabbro, etc.) to fill out the depth pieces of the roster with players with his identity.

Top end talent will have to come from Eklund and draft picks from the next few drafts. Just look at how NJD built their organization. Top 7 picks for 6 of 8 years including the top overall pick 2x in addition to a 2nd overall and 2-3 more top 5 picks. Then add to that they sold assets (Hall, Coleman, and Palmieri/Zajac) to gain 3 more 1st round picks and that’s how you build to the point where you can start going for it again.

Goal is that with this deal, adding around the edges some (see above), a Karlsson trade, and the others I’d like to see made before Friday (Barabanov, Bonino, Labanc, Gregor, and Reimer) that you can jump start this process and get it done in 3-4 years rather than 8.

Reading the Mukh thread on the Devils board has made me feel much, much better about this trade.. and I already liked it. He is fascinating and has a ton of potential — I recommend reading the boards and the Russian guy who watches him play (and is very high on him).

What we need now is to lose as many games as possible and get Bedard or Fantilli, and suddenly the future of this team is maybe not so bad.

I think we also may get that Pulli fellow and Fabbro — that’s almost a complete rebuild of our defense which is ATROCIOUS, so… good.

Hopefully Grier can trade up in the draft (suggested he might) and get a top 15 defensive prospect - cause we still need a top 2 D-man in the pipeline.

Agree with all of this.

Though I really, really don’t want Greenway. I don’t really get that move.

Zetterlund will definitely be in your lineup. Thoughout the year he was slotting in the top 9 on our team. (Had a very sucessful stint with Nico Hischier and Tatar line 1, particularly during our hot stretch). He cooled a bit afterwards but was in our top 9 (and a bit on 4th because he can play a physical game when required.

He sat for a few games in december or jan and came back energized. Play was solid up until the TDL.

He also can play 4th if you need grinding out or that extra edge. Good shot, good speed, strong as hell (dont let the height confuse you, guy is a tank).

Hes the guy i didnt want to lose in this, would have parted with Holtz or Sharangovich, IMO.

Nikita ohoktiuk had a decent short stint this year, very fiesty and physical defender. Played ok, had one key goal in a pivotal time, but made a mistake a few games later at a key moment and was sent down. He was jockeying with Kevin Bahl in our lineup for the 7th spot.

Andreas Johnsson seems way too talented for AHL. Not sure why the team put him in the doghouse. He had lost some confidence last year but he has NHL skillset still (IMO)

This dude's graphs are pretty worthless, but I am happy that if they had a choice, they chose Muk over Holtz. Look at Holtz's comparables. I do not see any way how he doesn't end up like Goldobin or Dahlen, on any team. Also, Svechnikov!:laugh:
