I'm not a fan of tanking either, but we've fallen so shockingly low at this point that I'm inclined to just roll with it. #4 overall is capable of changing a franchise.

Reinhart
Larsson
Johansen
Kane
Pieterangelo
Hickey
Backstrom

Historically, it's been populated with such luminous names as Andrew Ladd, Joni Pitkanen and Bryan Allen.

On the upper end of the spectrum, a lucky team might score the next Paul Kariya, Roberto Luongo, Jason Bonsignore, Chad Kilger or Pavel Brendl.

Honestly want them to tank. Games in hand could be an issue though compared to the other teams in the basement.

You guys and all this top 4 pick talk, haven't you learned anything from the Canes? Once they are really out of it, the pressure will be off and they'll start winning games. Not enough to make the playoffs, but enough to ensure they pick in the 8-12 range.

Ima let you finish, and Im real happy for u, but Francis was one of the best 4th overall picks of ALL TIME....of ALL TIME. :shakehead

But I agree, unless we want to draft the next Brendl or :shudder: Paul Kariya, we need to really turn up the suck level.

Sorry, there's no way anyone should be in favor of tanking when this team still controls its own destiny for the playoffs, despite the schedule and despite the recent play. If they lose a few more, sure, change your tune then. If they lose tonight, sure, the disappointment won't be as much as it was a few games ago. But to "honestly want them to tank" still at this stage of the season is a joke.

Eh, Florida's got 2 games, Colorado's got 1, and Calgary's the same.

So really, just Florida has the advantage, and they've won 3 in a row. Which is the same amount Carolina has won in a month.

When I have zero confidence in the team, I have no reason to think they will even sniff the playoffs. Tanking is a lot easier for me to handle than keeping my hopes up for the playoffs.

Clearly you haven't watched the Carolina Hurricanes play over the last 10 games

And even if they somehow manage to make the playoffs, they'll be having two of Corvo/McBain/Harrison in the top 4. I'd rather not watch that bloodbath, TBH.

Yes, because this team has done so well when they controlled their own destiny in the past :sarcasm:

And if they "somehow make the playoffs", it'll still be a playoff season, which we haven't seen in the last couple years. If they "somehow make the playoffs", they'll do so as a #3 seed, and can you really say there's no chance in a series against Toronto/Ottawa/NJ? Top 4 aside, I see a series against any of those 3 going 6 games at least. Even if it results in a loss, it's still more than we've experienced since 2009.

For what it's worth, the team has gone 8-5 with Pitkanen out of the lineup. Ironically, that's the record the Canes will have to finish with to have greater than 50% chance to make the playoffs.

For us to make the playoffs, the Staal line/top PP unit would have to contribute at about 5 goals a game for the rest of the season, because we've given up 4 goals or more in 8 of our last 9 games, and our bottom 9 is clearly incapable of picking up the slack.

I've said my spiel about my hatred of tanking, but guess what? Next year, we aren't going to be in a division where the division leader (and guarenteed playoff spot) is one of the 10 worst teams in hockey. We're only in a playoff spot because the rest of our division is completely brutal.

This. The second the Canes are mathematically eliminated, the sprint to 9th in the conference begins.

Nothing would cap off this season more fittingly than a solid winning streak, putting us in a win-and-in situation the last game of the year, and losing that game 7-1.

Cause that's Hurricanes hockey baby.

Call me crazy but I'm seeing a Win tonight. I have no reasonable evidence to back this up with the Canes having averaged less than 2 goals a game for the better part of a month. They have looked better of late and Ellis is going to be fired up about getting pulled.

Skinner is knocking on the door step, he get's a goal. With Ruutu having 2 assists the last time he was in, I can see the second line coming up with 2. If the first line stays with their usual 1-2 goals then we're looking at a possible 4 goal game. If Ellis play's like he was before he got sliced then holding TB to 4 goals isn't too much to ask, right?

Now we just need Nash to put one in like we know he's dying to do and folks that looks like a win to me.

It's been a long day at work, I'm rambling.

It's a compliment to Kariya, including him next to a legend like Brendl who was better than Crosby.

Really? Your going to place Kariya next to Brendl? I almost don't know whether to be upset with this comment, or just laugh. Yeah he didn't do well in his later career, but really? I can't even begin to comment on this.

No, not really. I thought the sarcasm was obvious by virtue of the absurd comparison.

Kariya and Luongo were 4th overalls who became borderline Hall of Famers. Brendl, Bonsignore and to a lesser extent Kilger were hyped up to legendary levels and did nothing.
