The idea we were way better came from yourself, Dekes, Zekes, Fogelhund and the rest of the gang that gets utterly offended when someone suggests Dubas' facts smell.

Could you imagine your reaction if someone tried to tell you they think we're only as good as Columbus? Mother of God.
Don’t think I ever suggested as such.

I'm sure it comes from all the crowing about how Keefe had us on pace for over 100 points, and we were only so low in the standing because of Babcock's slow start....

The excuse for this one is hilarious

Dubas is such a great team builder that he turned a 105 point team into one that wasn't better then the broke boy jackets. This after paying everyone insane deals

If this was the narrative from the dubros then he should have been fired after that year.

But no they were all blaming it on Babcock and getting goalie'd

Every year a btw excuse. Also if the the team isn't good enough then it's time to fire the GM. Somehow "we're not that good of a team" is the excuse this year again

Did he say that, yikes that's dumb.

I think what he means is Keefe is already elite and will be widely recognized as being elite in the future. I can't agree though, I do think Keefe has been good but not that good.
It's hard to know what he meant.

Does Tampa have 50% of their cap tied up in 4 forward, I guessing no. I guess maybe they can afford to rotate better bottom 6. Because they are winning and we are out again

Just moving goalposts...

Pretty sure their bottom-six make less than ours...

I just realize that I was listening to the 2021 Shanahan media availability. :laugh:

they got swept by Columbus before their minor tweaking......
That’s true but they had also gone to the conference final and had deep runs intermixed in seasons before the got swept……..we have had nothing but failure in the playoffs. Not a relevant comparison

Colorado is a comparison, running back the same core for much longer while only seeing the second round and people think Sakic is a genius.

Its pretty clear from the interviews today that anything short of perhaps missing the playoffs (without a valid reason), is an acceptable ending to each season with all jobs safe, and minor changes around the edges coming.

Leafs were 4th overall last year and it meant nothing come playoff time even with home ice advantage.

Considering the history of where they were under Richard Peddie and Brian Burke it makes sense they are okay with the high regular season bar but the organization needs a real push to not become this eras San Jose Sharks.

In some ways, losing honourably in the first round gets us back to 2016-17 when they first lost to the Washington Capitals. Before the rot set in vs Columbus and Montreal. Take that for what it’s worth.

Not moving anything. The cap allocation is a lot of the reasons we fail every year in the playoffs.
if as you say that Tampa is able to get a better bottom 6 for less money then the Leafs then what does that say about Dubas compared to Tampa’s GM……….maybe we need a guy who can make better deals

Tampa buys their bottom 6, they don't sign them. Coleman, Goodrow, Hagel, Paul, all bought, only gave up like 6 first-rounders or something close to that.

They've got a long way to go into becoming this eras San Jose, a franchise that has won 17 playoff rounds since 2000.

The difference is the Tampa core (Kuch, Stamkos, Point, Hedman and Vasi) are signed for $42 million. I know they have the state tax advantage, but most of them signed for less to keep their team together in recent years.

Now look at Marner, Matthews and JT. $33.5 million. There’s your answer.

Here is Tampa's trade history for their bottom 6

Paul <-> Joseph, 4th
Hagel, 4th, 4th <-> Raddysh, Katchouck, 1st, 1st
Goodrow, 3rd <-> Greco, 1st
Coleman <-> 1st, Nolan Foote

So to simplify it.

Paul, Hagel, Goodrow, Coleman, 3rd 4th, 4th
for
Joseph, Raddysh, Katchouck, Foote, Greco, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 4th

Assuming we'd be complaining about how terrible our pipeline is if we gave this up.

But if we are fine with it, let's do it, our core is approaching the age they were when they spent all this.

Give away our top prospects and bunch of 1sts for good role players.

Mrazek trade will not be easy. We will have to take some salary back as I don’t see anyone taking it from us and clearing out his cap space.

It's going to be difficult to move him, holl, Muzzin ( if that's what we want to do etc)

I don't think we're getting out of this off season without dumping a first for cap space.

People acting like there's a lineup for mrazek are pie in the sky thinking. It's a horrific deal

the brass just has to recognize that playoff hockey and regular season hockey are different games and build the team with that in mind. marner not having scored in around 17 playoff games was of concern but he did step up (a little). with the cap as it is, most of our moves will probably involve getting rid of dead weight like mikheyev and engvall (no career playoff goals with a goalie in net) in favor of players that have at least contributed more in the playoffs.
