Who are some high risk/high reward guys you wished the Rangers hadn’t passed on?

I didn't follow last year's draft, but it seems like Tippett and Vilardi were seen as having higher upside than Lias. Either way, I'd have preferred someone less safe. He was literally the safest guy on the board at #7.

Vilardi is a lot of things, boom or bust is probably not one of them. I think the word safe was used quite a bit for him. In fact, his scouting report reads eerily similar to our least favorite top prospect.

Tippet, maybe. But I can’t say I was a big fan. Not the guy I would’ve taken a swing on.

He's a minus 18 in 25 games. That's his partner dragging him down? C'mon man. This guy isn't a good guy and he isn't a good hockey player.
The rangers give up a billion goals a game and score like nothing...they haven't won a game in like a month...everyone's numbers are in the tank...that's not even taking into account that plus minus is the most worthless stat in the world.

Ek65 is minus 30

I think it's extremely premature to talk about contending. Not only are we missing the 2 legit superstars you need to win the Cup (Leetch and Messier, Crosby and Malkin, Kopital and Doughty, Kane and Toews, Chara and Thomas, Brodeur and Stevens), and we don't even have that top-shelf second tier (Zubov, Graves, Kovalev, Larmer). Maybe Kreider-Zib-Butcher fit that second tier, but we don't have that on defense, we are merely hoping Skjei and others get there. We have a bunch of guys who will turn into Nemchinov, Matteau, Tikkanen, Karpovtsev. We are hoping Lias turns into Larmer and Chytil into Kovalev (at least how he was in the Spring of 1994, not when he was enigmatic).

Who is our Messier? Who is our Leetch? Zubov? Graves? To discuss Cup contention right now is like saying, "well, I already have sperm in my balls, so pretty much the same as having a child, time to go picking college for him."

Right now our development is in the sperm stage. Congratulations, we are fertile. Now let's see if it actually goes anywhere.
Contending for a playoff spot....not for a cup.

Names roughly equal to Spoon.
Firsts are about the same (the Boston one likely to be higher)
Rykov+Lindgren roughly equal to Hajek
The second we got from the Devils is roughly equal to the conditional 1st or 2nd because depending on the condition being realized (and it's a pretty high bar to win the Cup), it would be half a round earlier or later.

You can argue about the above, who is better, but it's in the same ballpark. So that leaves McDonagh and Miller getting only Howden more than Nash+Grabs rentals got. Spectacular value there [sarcasm]. Granted we picked up some salary for Nash, but we gave up 2 guys in their prime who are not rentals for two rentals on the wrong side of 30. The difference is roughly Howden. He better turn into Getzlaf for this to make any sense. I suspect, however, he's ultimately a run of the mill forward.

Rykov+Lindgren is equal to Hajek? On what basis? Everyone here is just forgetting about Rykov.

He had just as good of a WJC in 2017 as Hajek had in 2018. The guy played over 20 minutes today for a hockey team that is probably better than the current Rangers. Hajek plays against kids.

They probably won't. Fans overrate their own players. It seems like every time a player becomes a Ranger, their ceiling gets higher.

Well, if nothing else, people can at least say I am consistent with Howden.

I may be completely wrong and hang my head in shame, but I’ll at least be consistently wrong.

I have no problem if someone has been consistent. If you've been consistent on Howden, props to you for that. But this is a general trend we see very often. Happens with players and prospects. We overrate our own players. A lot of people do it, not just one or two.

Middlestadt, easily. Even after hearing about his poor combine, I'd still rather have picked him. You can't teach skill, you can work on conditioning though.

I watched this team suck for seven years and not even get the full benefit from a high draft pick. I’m more than prepared for what’s to come. I say, bring it on.
Here, here. I'm with you, Jas. I remember the days when the most we had to look forward to was, "Lindros looks skinny". ;)

People trying to compare this year's dire stretch to the dark ages? No way. Back then, as a fan of this team, you felt we were mired in a bottomless pit of mediocrity and despair.

I have infinitely more...trust... in this braintrust. I'm really looking forward to our draft picks this summer. I think we'll have a good plan. And, I know it's going against what's been ingrained in me after all these years, but I actually have a sneaky good feeling about the lottery. Not saying we'll land Dahlin, but I think we'll move up into the top 3-4.

No doubt.

We talked about this extensively in the days and hours leading to the deadline.

With regards to this crop of prospects we received, I feel like the assessment has been pretty balanced. Most people commenting on second pair or second line upsides, not too many bold claims. Hajek seen as being a bit more boom or bust, maybe having first pair upside if it all comes together. Howden more of a top six upside than definite first line star.

I think we’re doing surprisingly “okay” with most of the expectations. I’m cautioisly optimistic?

Okay, that I can see. Mittelstadt was definitely what I’d consider boom or bust and would’ve been worth a swing. With that said, I really don’t think their development to this point and potential ceilings are as far apart as some think.

Lias has a great hockey IQ. He reminds me a lot of Stepan but has a better shot and might be a slightly better skater. I think his natural tools are better than Stepan's and I like his competitive nature. He's definitely a safer pick than Middlestadt but I think Middlestadt's ceiling is a lot higher. He could be an elite skill player for a while. Hopefully Lias pans out as a Bergeron type.

Middlestadt definitely was worth taking a swing on. Though, you could say the Rangers taking Lias allowed them to take a big swing on Chytil.

Poile is also the best GM in the sport. This is still largely the same management group that flopped hard with their best pick over the last 20 years with McIlrath. And yes I'm largely convinced this is still the Sather regime.

That said, we have to hit a Game 7 of the World Series 700 foot walk off grand slam at the draft this year. IE using the TB pick to move up. AND AV is fired. I want him nowhere near anyone we've drafted or traded for recently.

That will go a long way towards changing my outlook on things. But on the surface, not a good start.

And you can't blame me or anyone else for feeling that way.
Poile traded down when he coulda gotten ek65 to draft a nobody.....poile have up a first for...damn it his name is escaping me..but a face off specialist.

Poile had some awwwfffuullll moves.

Now that Miller is gone, who will commit an ungodly amount of turnovers in his place?

We still have Kreider to take all the dumb OZ penalties

I can’t say I ever saw Mittelstadt’s overall ceiling as being elite. I see him a level below that.

I always explained it and viewed it this way - Mittelstadt’s upside is in the 25-30 goal, 60-65 point range. Andersson’s upside is in the 20-25 goal, 55-60 point range.

So if Mittelstadt hits the higher end of his ceiling, and Andersson the lower end, that gap looks more noticeable. But if both guys hit closer to either end, be it the low end or the high end, are the extra 5 some odd goals/points worth more than the other elements Andersson brings?

Was never quite sold on that. Though I think both are excellent prospects.

Outside of Girardi, I really don't have any desire to watch those guys get the Cup. Cally can get lost.
Gotta be honest, I wouldn't mind Tampa not winning a Cup even if it means our 2019 pick is a second rounder. I didn't like seeing Hagelin win 2 with the Penguins and it will be even worse seeing 5 Rangers from our "almost winning the Cup" period all win one together on another team.

Mittelstadt screamed Jessiman2.0

I know the WJC isn't the end all be all of player evaluation (but again McAvoy came out of last year's gold medal looking like a bonafide star).. but based on what I saw from LA compared to Mittelstatdt, he looked like a grown ass man with a complete game. While Casey looked like a puck hog Bobby Ryan wannabe.

And Buffalo is the worst possible team for him to go to. I don't feel good about his chances of being a big impact NHLer.
