Judging by Gorton's quotes after the deal, they definitely want to keep him. We have 2 pending assets in Shestyorkin and Rykov where it would be beneficial to have him in the mix. His analytics show that the kid is money in the transition game (defense to offense) even before his offensive outburst this year and plays a solid all around game. Why not keep him?

I'm not advocation not keeping him. I'm just throwing out the possibility that the org might just see him as another trade chip (ditto Spooner)....

If he clicks, he's probably more offensively talented.

But Miller probably brings a little more diversity to his skill set.

Both guys can alternate between looking really good and really lost --- sometimes within the same shift.
I wonder if the front office just felt like JT needed a change of scenery.

GMJG on WFAN: "If you look around the league, a lot of teams have turned it around quicker than anyone thought and that's what we plan to do."

I dig how much Gorton has made himself available throughout this deadline to convey the message. This is an exciting time, I think a lot of us were ready to turn the page on this roster (maybe even earlier than this).

The Miller swap is a loss. Don’t sugar coat it we got beat there and badly where we probably win the Mcdonagh for Hajek/Howden a first and prob another first deal
Can you tell me what exactly Miller had done is his last two years to make him a "loss"? He has been COMPLETELY useless in PO hockey and disappears consistently throughout the season. He's young but isn't a gamechanger and wasn't contributing towards winning PO games. No one in this core was and that's why they need to move on.

If he's a 4C, he busted. He doesn't have a huge ceiling, but has an excellent floor. The reasonable projection right now is a good 3C with a 2C possible upside. Same as Lias. I think the Rangers are hoping one becomes a quality 2C, the other a top-shelf 3C. Nieves at 4C and hope against hope that Chytil turns into a 1C. Would be beautiful if it worked out that way.

I'd rank Howden similar to Lias, maybe a little behind, but in the same general tier.
And hope my lottery tickets turn into a retirement plan.

A big theme on this GMJG interview is he keeps harking on character. He has mentioned a few times 'we want guys who won't give up' and 'if they are not successful it won't be for lack of effort.'

That is a very telling line. It seems like a lot of what he's doing is not just targeting guys who are talented but guys who give 100% night in and night out and are held accountable.

I dont see any reason why we cant go out and compete next year with the right additions. We can add Nash back if the price is right and Kovalchuk. Inject Andersson down the middle. Our wings are strong with Spooner, Zucc, Buch, Kreider. Adding back Nash and Kovalchuk gives us 3 complete lines. The defense is where we will need guys to step up.

Maybe the Hockey Gods bless us with DAHLIN?

that only works when u dont have a Pejorative Slur behind the bench

Player A
D+1 in WHL: 51GP 33-32-65
D+2 in WHL: 56GP 46-36-82

Player B
D+1 in WHL: 58GP 38-43-81
D+2 in WHL: 38GP 22-36-58

Okay player A is Jamie Benn, and B is Howden

Wayne Gretzky never got drafted. I never got drafted. Ergo, I'm The Great One. Less ridiculously, but same point: Callahan had 54 points in 60 games as a 19/20 year old in the Juniors as an all-around player; Gabriel Fontaine had 52 points in 59 games as an all-around player. Ergo, Fortaine is our future captain who'll consistently score 20-25 goals and 40-50 points in his prime.

Yes, it's possible that Howden exceeds expectations, but you can't say that just because one guy went from zero to hero, so will the next one. Far more bust than exceed expectations.

I do think this makes it easier for the the KHL prospects to come over when there is a Russian contingent on the Rangers.

The Rangers do not want those prospects to re-sign in the KHL. If it takes them playing nice with Kovalchuk, adding some countrymen beforehand to make them all want to come over more, I think that is part of it.

I just hope the Rangers do not get too carried away.

I'm not a big Kovalchuk fan, mostly I think his plus 35 contract if it is multi year is a bad idea as it can not be bought out nor include performance bonuses. It will likely be somewhat expensive and include clauses.

If Kovalchuk is the plan, I hope they can get that to one year with performance bonuses which are allowed in plus 35 contracts which are one year only. The threshold for bonus money in a one year plus 35 deal are pretty easy to reach.

I may be reading through this interview, but it sounds like they don't like the "FEEL" of this team just as much as the talent. Like the team mentally gave up and mailed it in. Several players just don't care, coasting on ability, etc. GMJG wants players with a strong work ethic.

Almost seems like a pot shot at Miller.

That's exactly what was said without saying anything. He said Steve Y and him talked about Miller before .... way before any of this went down. It seemed like there were 2 deals that went down, the Mac one and the JT one, the Mac one was a business deal for 2 picks and some assets, and the JT one was a character trade.

I would give both Spooner and Namestnikov longer contracts to keep their AAV down. I'd do the same with Hayes and Skjei.

Spooner - 5 years @ $4.25m per season

Hayes - 5 years @ 3.75m per season

Namestnikov - 5 years @ $3.5m per season

Skjei - 8 years @ $4.25m
