Confirmed with Link: McDonagh + Miller to Tampa Bay for Namestnikov + Howden + Hajek + 2018 1st + conditional 2019 1st

Stepan abused the WJC at the same age. He looked like a man among boys. Howden was ok, pretty good, but not nearly on par. Step was also arguably the best 19 year old in NCAA that year. Howden is doing well in the Juniors, but he's not the best guy his age there.
People are delusional comparing these 2. One is playing rookie mode. The other all Pro.

The part of the trade I'm not overly thrilled with is Miller/Namestnikov swap. Maybe I'm biased but i think Miller is a slightly better player. Hoping to be proven wrong.
Miller is slightly better...when he shows up and isnt giving the opponents extended shifts in our zone with lazy careless turnovers.

Point and Sergachev were never going to be a part of the deal, just as Marner and Nylander weren’t. Anybody who thought that was being delusional. When people here discussed a McDonagh deal seriously, the realistic return was Foote/Howden or Raddysh/this year’s 1st/a conditional 2nd that could become a 1st. Lol and behold, that’s pretty much the return. Shocking.

Sounds fairly evident that the rangers wanted Hajek who’s stock went thru the roof after the WJCs.

Very much appears they liked him more than Foote who I’m betting they could have had if they wanted.

Same goes for howden vs Raddysh. I take the center all day long as well

After having a night to sleep on it, the value the Rangers got for these 2 is just fine. For me at least, it's a little painful losing these guys(esp McD), and it would have done much more to ease the pain if we had really blown it out of the park (kinda like we did for Nash). Instead, we just got fair value, and if you look at the last 2 weeks on a high level, Gorton has fast tracked this rebuild in a way that I'm not sure I have ever seen. All in all, rebuilds hurt, this one is no different. Looking forward to the draft.

Everything i've read about Howden (not on HF) says he was a top 3/4 prospect in the lightning organization. Some even have him ahead of Foote. Did he regress this year? Some on main board say he's probably a 3rd or 4th line center? How?

If he's a 4C, he busted. He doesn't have a huge ceiling, but has an excellent floor. The reasonable projection right now is a good 3C with a 2C possible upside. Same as Lias. I think the Rangers are hoping one becomes a quality 2C, the other a top-shelf 3C. Nieves at 4C and hope against hope that Chytil turns into a 1C. Would be beautiful if it worked out that way.

I'd rank Howden similar to Lias, maybe a little behind, but in the same general tier.

The Miller swap is a loss. Don’t sugar coat it we got beat there and badly where we probably win the Mcdonagh for Hajek/Howden a first and prob another first deal

What’s a realistic expectation of what it would cost to sign Namestnikov to a 2 year deal?

4 year deal?

6 year deal?

He makes $2.8 mill now. Curious what you guys think

So to summarize: Everyone us wrong. TBL fans are wrong, neutral fans are wrong, our fans were wrong when expecting returns. Literally everyone is wrong. There is an excuse for everyone being wrong rather than a possibility that Gorts shat his bed.
Literally none of this is what I said.

When you have a billion assets and give up 3 or 4 really good ones...it's nothing when you have 10 more right behind them.

this is the problem with the roster building thread. we repeat these fantasy trades that were never possible so many times that we think they are real. we didn't turn down better guys, just like we didn't decided to not get a 1st for talbot. this was the best offer on the table. What else was he supposed to do? He tried to play chicken to see if yzerman would blink and waited till the very last minute when his options became take the offer or walk away and try again at the draft? sergachev was never an option.

and what makes you think that we'd do better than this at the draft? and what makes you think that gorton had spoken to other teams to get a feel for what those offers would be?

I think Lias goes to wing eventually put can fill in and can win face offs. Similar to Miller in that regard

If Lias and Howden become our 2/3C's that's not bad. We still have Chytil (could be moved to wing?) and Zibby on the roster. I kind of like the young depth we have, sure, nobody is Crosby or Tavares, but who is?

I was trying to find out what his walk year was (does he have 1 or 2 more RFA years). On the surface, if we can get a 4ish on a 5 or 6 year deal, that would be great. I definitely think he was gonna make less than Miller due to his previous deals and more recent production turn compared to Miller (he's also played less career games).

I would argue that both prospects the Rangers got in the McDonagh deal were better than what they got from Boston.

Pretty sure its 2019 Beacon.

Tough to wake up today knowing Ryan McDonagh is no longer a Ranger, but it had to happen. This would have been hard to endure no matter what the return was. I think if the draft pick becomes a 1st round pick then the Miller for Namestnikov becomes slightly easier to swallow. Had we come away with Point instead of Howden or Foote instead of Hajek i think everyone would feel a little more settled today.

Pray for these kids to develop into NHLers

I agree. I hope Tampa wins the Cup so we get 2 first rounders. I hope Names will turn things around in NYC because he likes Brighton Beach more than Safety Harbor. I hope Howden is able to transition to the pros well. Would make things much easier.

P.S. I have no hate for former Rangers in Tampa. McDonagh, Girardi, Cally worked extraordinarily hard in NYC. They are good people.

I think the first question is: do they want to keep him?

Judging by Gorton's quotes after the deal, they definitely want to keep him. We have 2 pending assets in Shestyorkin and Rykov where it would be beneficial to have him in the mix. His analytics show that the kid is money in the transition game (defense to offense) even before his offensive outburst this year and plays a solid all around game. Why not keep him?

GMJG on WFAN: "If you look around the league, a lot of teams have turned it around quicker than anyone thought and that's what we plan to do."
