They've had 8+ years to recognize what us fans have known all along, I doubt it just hit them today. (In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure they've known most of that time too, they just have no interest, for whatever reason, in changing their approach.)

All 3 of the East coast guys (Mac, Marchand and Crosby) all played for a below market salary for a long time

Does it mean much? Who knows, we will see.

However, I am encouraged by the fact that the team is focused on improving heading into the playoffs. Last year they limped into the playoffs, seemingly due to a focus on individual goals rather than a team goal.

#1 in the division is a realistic team goal to go after, to ensure games leading up to the playoffs are meaningful.

Difference is that Ovechkin performed in the playoffs. He had 30 goals in his first 51 playoff games, Matthews has 23 in 55.

Kessel was never going to be the guy but more a complimentary player. Matthews could literally beat Ovechkin in terms of speed to, 400 goals and become the 5th fastest in NHL history, come playoff time though it's debatable whether he's even a top 50 goal scorer of all time, forget top 10 or top 5 as his season stats suggest.

I love Matthews and he’s the best player to wear the blue and white IMO but if this team gets knocked out of the playoffs in the first round again, hard to argue against doing a complete retool and shakeup and I mean trading Matthews and anyone on this roster for the right price. We need to get away from personal attachment to these players.

Because he gets double coverage as teams half heartedly leave Mitch Marner alone on the perimeter.

Keep repeating this over and over never penetrates. Mitch Marner is not a good compliment for AM34 period. Especially in the playoffs.
