McDavid questions Vancouver switching goalies and playing PP1 in 8-1 game

I would love to find a reason to hate on the guy, but this? The reporter asked him the question of the title and he said he thought it was "interesting, never seen it before."

He had no idea about the guy throwing up in his mask, if he wasn't sick it, everyone would agree pulling the goalie the first game of the season of a winning game would be "interesting."

Did anyone saying "what if it was the other way?!" or "he does it all the time" actually listen to the clip or just read the title?

I don't see the issue here besides a dude who just got destroyed in the first game of the season being asked to point the finger at anyone on his team while in his head probably knowing exactly who sucked terribly, but not wanting to say it to these guys. So coming off as weird.

Are you sure you watched the clip?

He was questioned about PP1. No one asked him about switching goalies. He brings up unprovoked that it's 'interesting' that Vancouver switched goalies and he's never seen it before, says DeSmith's not an EBUG who needed to be brought in. Then he goes on to say the PP1 is not ideal and literally ends the clip saying "obviously we don't like that"
Yea, because I would assume he didn't know about him being sick/throwing up, anyone in the world would think it was interesting to pull a winning goalie.

and for the "we don't like that" it came after "not ideal." Hey they are playing they're best guys how do you like that? "obviously not ideal...." and then he mumbles awkwardly for the next 5 seconds probably hoping to move and says random shit until someone asks him the next "who's fault on the team is you lost" question.

Really not that big of a deal.

You guys are weird.

McDavid will never be the true leader that Crosby is because Sid has matured by his 9th NHL season. The fact McDavid is complaining about something like this in his 9th NHL season is concerning. Get your boys regrouped and back on the rails for the next game.

As mentioned, it isn't an accurate observation, but the complaint wouldn't even make any sense if it hypothetically was accurate.

Playing your stronger players on the powerplay to run up the score in an out of reach blow-out is disrespectful, but playing your weaker goalie in a blow-out is also somehow disrespectful? How can those both be true at the same time?

Wouldn't switching to your backup be the equivalent of playing your fourth liners on the powerplay? In theory, both would be ways to mercifully take your foot off the gas pedal as an act of class, no?

If you're insulted by a team thinking they can afford to switch to their backup, shouldn't you also be insulted by a team thinking they can afford to deploy anything worse than their 1st unit on the powerplay?

They didn’t watch the clip and if they did, they didn’t comprehend its extremely basic subject matter.

These are people who supposedly love hockey, yet don’t watch the games and hunger for the best at his craft to fail.

“You guys are weird” is also very a diplomatic way of pointing this out.

I would settle for “deranged” or “disturbing”.

Good thing last nights game wasn't on home ice, the ice would have been littered with Oilers jerseys. It would be hilarious if the Canucks spank them again on Saturday except this time would hurt more because it's on Oilers ice.

In this thread, folks reacting to title and not McDavid's comments.

From what I took - he hadn't seen a back-up go in with 10 mins left before so thought it was interesting / unusual. When asked about the Canucks PP he said it wasn't ideal and then trailed off before adding they don't like it. The 'it' could be interpreted as the Oilers don't like being down 6-1 and on the PK, rather than McDavid was personally offended that Vancouver would press on the PP.

Holy spin zone hahahaha. Oilers fans crack me up.

I’m sure he was just commenting how interesting it was. “Gee golly I’ve never seen that before! Interesting move!”

Did we watch the same 2 min clip?

he sd he "found it interesting" and "we didnt like it"

Thats some really really mild commentary imo

The over reaction is funny
Agreed.

It's pretty funny so many people call McDavid a crybaby as they post all this hyperbole based on some minor comments on a question he was directly asked.

(For the record I'm not an Oilers fan)

Oh, are we at the time of season where we pretend that McDavid's stats is a result of stat padding?

This dumb argument at least used to work better when he didn't also lap the field in playoff points. He has 53 points in his last 28 playoff games, for just shy of 2 points per game. His point totals might just be the result of his being good at hockey.

He questioned putting the back up goalie in, which is really strange if you dont know about Demko being ill (which he probably wouldnt right after the game).

And the reporter was the one asking about pp1... McDavid didnt make a big case out of it

That interview just striked me as McDavid wanting to gtfo of there. Which I mean, fair, but also wow he looked lifeless.

I hate dumb media questions like that. But McDavid should also stay in his lane and focus on himself and his team. Who cares what the Canucks did or didnt do. You played like garbage.

People say they don't like the lack of personality or the canned answers, but then God forbid anybody says anything.

Remember when the Oilers put in an EBUG goalie for the end of a blowout game?

In what world is resting a sick goalie worse than that?

I mean, McDavid is being a baby but those things aren’t really similar. I assume he didn’t know Demko was sick.

That said, I do find it funny that teams are expected to sit their first PP unit out in a blowout but at the same time, if a team chose to rest it’s starter in the third period of a blowout it would be the height of disrespect. And the latter would arguably actually be a smart decision, but good luck convincing the guy to come out.
