McDavid heating up, what are odds on 150 points this season?

McDavid now ranks 4th all-time in PP points in a season (Mario Lemieux has four of the top five spots):

I doubt McDavid will catch Le Magnifique for 2nd/3rd place, but he could become the only player in NHL history, other than Lemieux, to reach 70 PP points in a season. (Gretzky's career high is "only" 61 points).

Before anyone suggests that McDavid is a PP specialist, remember that he led the league in ES scoring four times. In all of NHL history, only Gretzky has done that more (and this ties McDavid with Howe and Esposito).

You're showing the league average PP goals per game, right? If we do a simple adjustment, McDavid probably ends up with more adjusted PP points than any of Lemieux's four big seasons. (Though it's also possible that other players could end up with more than McDavid using that approach).

The fact that Gretzky only had a peak of 61 points on the power play is absolutely mind blowing.

Goes to show how dominant he was at even strength.

He had more EVP than anyone had points in
1982
1983
1984
1985
1986
1987

He lead the league in EVP in
1980
1981
1982
1983
1984
1985
1986
1987
1988
1990
1991

11 times leading in even strength points
McDavid is about to do his 5th, which is second most ever.

Gretzky is, easily, by far and away my favourite player of all-time. McDavid has pretty much solidified the #2 spot for me. He's absolutely mind-blowing.

This is coming from a Leafs fan. I couldn't even fathom what it'd be like to be able to root for these two greats as a part of my team over the many years/decades of fandom.

(I say the same for Pens fans with Lemieux, Jagr and Crosby)

Oh, as for 150. I mentioned it earlier in this thread -- it'd almost be a disappointment at this point (as ridiculous as that may sound) if he doesn't hit 156. Leaving him in the same breath as only Gretzky and Lemieux.

He never really had the powerplay time Lemieux did most seasons. Lemieux still has the best PP of all time adjusted for powerplay time and scoring levels, but I'm pretty sure McDavid is really close. It's in a thread in the history section I'll have to check again.

The lowest since expansion was .55 PPG/game in '68 where Mikita had 27 PPP in 72 games. Otherwise since roughly 2010, it's been the lowest PP scoring era post expansion.

When adjusting powerplay scoring to '96 levels, McDavid has 91 PPP in 75 games. If we were to prorate Lemieux's ppp scoring rate to 82 games, it would be 92 over a full season.

That’s really all that needs to be said IMO.
I guess it's just hate & jealousy that McNugget should be on their favorite team.

I love that it's from a fan of the modern Jekyll & Hyde MTL team which, in a couple seasons, went from SCF to Habs Legends "passing the torch" to Nick Suzuki and a literal handful of rookies as they engaged Tank-Mode for Bedard. If they get him they'll likely start 5 rookies again for 2023-24 and the youngest MTL roster ever.

Points in 69 of 75 games.

68 out of 75. He had 4 of them in the opening 20 games too. Since Thanksgiving, he has a point in 52 out of 55 games.

That’s about Lemieux territory, who had points in 68 out of 76 during his 199 point 1988-1989 campaign. I think Gretzky had something absurd like 15 pointless games total over the course of 5 seasons.

Staggering no how we slice it.

Gretzky had 15 scoreless games during the 1983 to 1986 seasons (out of 314 games total).

During that period, he had as many 6+ point games as he had scoreless games. That's hard to fathom.

Gretzky loved running the score up. He was notoriously a great 3rd period player iirc

After 558 Crosby had 783. So 50 more points instead of 30, up to today.

Given the years missed during prime, the virus season during McDavid's prime, and given Crosby at 3-0 in cups, 50 points isn't enough to tip the scales.

Not saying it won't happen...But I'd need to see a lot more than 50 regular season points after 558 games difference.
McDavid is easily the best and most dominant player to grace this league since the Jagr that won 4 Art Ross in a row.
