No , Playing D has nothing to do with skill which Mario had plenty , D is all effort.

It has a lot to do with skill actually but a lot of effort from game to game will certainly be needed to be known as a good defensive player. He was one of those players who if he wanted to would've been one of the best defensive players, but with that offense why would he choose to play defense especially considering the era he mostly played in?
