How valuable are you, really, if you miss the playoffs?
How valuable are you in the discussion if you don't understand the concept of "team sport"?

If McDavid managed to put up 150pts and the team missed the playoffs, then they would have been dead last without him.How valuable are you, really, if you miss the playoffs?
That excuse doesn’t cut it when you’re vying for MVP. If your presence doesn’t improve the outcome of the season, you’re not that valuable.
If you’re a last place team without him, yeah you’re pretty damn valuableThat excuse doesn’t cut it when you’re vying for MVP. If your presence doesn’t improve the outcome of the season, you’re not that valuable.
And this is precisely why i think this argument doesn't work. Like what? You put up 150 points, 50-60 goals, your team misses the playoffs. Alright. What else could you have done? Played goalkeeper aswell? Been the coach behind the bench in between your shifts? Responsible for drafting and player development in between games? How valuable are you, really, if you miss the playoffs?
I keep thinking this every year, than the next year happens and he steps it up. Where does it end with this guy? Could he possibly be better again next year?

No, the heart trophy is for most valuable player, and you can be the leagues most valuable player to your team even if your team fails to make the playoffs. You have to imagine what they would have been without said player.
I’ve watched most every game he’s played in the league.
The biggest difference this season seems like a really simple one, but it’s led to more goals than ever before.
He’s “learned” to shoot five hole. He isn’t always trying to pick the corner anymore. For years he’s sniped goals on the corners but this year his five hole shots are catching goalies off guard because he’s rarely shot there before.
Also those who brag about their investments usually are not the ones doing well on them.
It would be impressive if McDavid put up a better season than Gretzky? Lmao seems like an understatement.150pts in a season isn’t unheard of. Now if he put up 200 pts that would be impressive.
Just going off performance versus peers, it's unlikely he will top the 2021 season. Here is his production versus 7th in scoring (to reduce noise)Unlikely. He's at the age where the real generational players peak (Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Crosby, Howe, etc). Especially forwards.
He may keep it up for 2-3 years but after that his level will decline a little bit. He may still be the best player in the league after that decline though.
Besides, McDavid right now isn't really better than he was in 2021 or the 2022 playoffs.
Season | McDavid Points | 7th in Points | Ratio |
2020-21 | 105 | 66 | 1.59 |
2022-23 | 72 | 48 | 1.50 |
2016-17 | 100 | 82 | 1.22 |
2017-18 | 108 | 92 | 1.17 |
2021-22 | 123 | 106 | 1.16 |
How is Crosby a real generational player if Mcdavid isn't? Seems to me so far in their careers Mcdavid has the upper hand? And even if he doesn't they are close enough it's ridiculous calling one generational and the other one something elseUnlikely. Ok gotcha! Already 6-8 glasses of wine into the new year celebrations and browsing here to avoid interacting with my stepparentI never said McDavid wasn't. I compared him to real generational players because I think he's in that category.

As an Oilers fan, any comparison to Lemieux should be a welcome one. He is probably the only player I could see having an argument for being better than Gretzky. What McDavid is doing is phenomenal though. I hope we get to watch him play the whole season and have another stellar playoff run. I think McDavid still has a lot to give in his career, but it's possible he might land himself on the top 3 when it's all said and done. Why do some fans always think we are "dissing" Lemieux when we talk about McDavid having one of the best seasons since him?
No one hates on Mario here, he gets a ton of respect.
So much insecurity.
It would be cool if McDavid could break Yzerman's non-Gretzky/Lemieux record of 155 points.
Agreed. I made a number of posts on this topic last year (here's one example, but there are others): NHL.com Trophy Tracker - Hart TrophyI told everyone that last season was the fluke season and not the "Canadian Division" year.
Worst on ice shooting % of his career by a mile last year.
The Canadian Division was McDavids actual level of ability.
Everyone is seeing it now.
