McDavid heating up, what are odds on 150 points this season?

That excuse doesn’t cut it when you’re vying for MVP. If your presence doesn’t improve the outcome of the season, you’re not that valuable.

Edmonton would be vying for Bedard if they didn't have McDavid.

You're really blind to your own bias.

So tell me, what pet player of yours is McDavid casting a shadow on?

Using the word 'excuse' belies a massive lack of understanding of what is needed in terms of -team- make-up to win a cup. You're painting your own self as an ignorant twit by giving us a full display of cognitive dissonance.

The reality is you're the one using an excuse, a bad team, as a pretext to put Edmonton's defficiencies squarely on McDavid's shoulders. It's mindboggingly idiotic.

How valuable are you, really, if you miss the playoffs?
And this is precisely why i think this argument doesn't work. Like what? You put up 150 points, 50-60 goals, your team misses the playoffs. Alright. What else could you have done? Played goalkeeper aswell? Been the coach behind the bench in between your shifts? Responsible for drafting and player development in between games?
No, the heart trophy is for most valuable player, and you can be the leagues most valuable player to your team even if your team fails to make the playoffs. You have to imagine what they would have been without said player.

I keep thinking this every year, than the next year happens and he steps it up. Where does it end with this guy? Could he possibly be better again next year?

Unlikely. He's at the age where the real generational players peak (Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Crosby, Howe, etc). Especially forwards.

He may keep it up for 2-3 years but after that his level will decline a little bit. He may still be the best player in the league after that decline though.

Besides, McDavid right now isn't really better than he was in 2021 or the 2022 playoffs.

Exactly this.

How is it McDavids fault if he directly leads to 4 goals for but then Campbell let’s in 2 stinkers, Nurse passes the puck to the wrong team twice, Barrie falls down leading to a breakaway and the rest of the team forgets they also can score goals?

Mike Bossy to Luke Robitaille "when ever I was starting to struggle I would shoot five hole, never missing the net and getting lucky with bounces off goalies too"
Luc called it simple but genius as it worked well for him the rest of his career.

I’ve watched most every game he’s played in the league.

The biggest difference this season seems like a really simple one, but it’s led to more goals than ever before.

He’s “learned” to shoot five hole. He isn’t always trying to pick the corner anymore. For years he’s sniped goals on the corners but this year his five hole shots are catching goalies off guard because he’s rarely shot there before.

Calendar year goals

McDavid 57
Matthews 57
Pasternac 55

Just going off performance versus peers, it's unlikely he will top the 2021 season. Here is his production versus 7th in scoring (to reduce noise)

SeasonMcDavid Points7th in PointsRatio
2020-21105661.59
2022-2372481.50
2016-17100821.22
2017-18108921.17
2021-221231061.16

His non-Art Ross years too are very dominant (1.17 in 2019 and 1.14 in 2020).

For reference, the highest post 1996 ratio is Jagr in 1999 (1.37). Lemieux in 1996 had 1.49/Jagr had 1.38. Gretzky has multiple seasons over 1.80, peaking at 1.98 in 1985. Seriously, he hit 208 points while 7th had 105.

If he can maintain he ratio, it will be worth more over 82 games than 56 and likely go down as the best offensive season ever outside the Big Four and Espo.

How is Crosby a real generational player if Mcdavid isn't? Seems to me so far in their careers Mcdavid has the upper hand? And even if he doesn't they are close enough it's ridiculous calling one generational and the other one something else

I never said McDavid wasn't. I compared him to real generational players because I think he's in that category.

Why do some fans always think we are "dissing" Lemieux when we talk about McDavid having one of the best seasons since him?

No one hates on Mario here, he gets a ton of respect.

So much insecurity.
As an Oilers fan, any comparison to Lemieux should be a welcome one. He is probably the only player I could see having an argument for being better than Gretzky. What McDavid is doing is phenomenal though. I hope we get to watch him play the whole season and have another stellar playoff run. I think McDavid still has a lot to give in his career, but it's possible he might land himself on the top 3 when it's all said and done.

It would be cool if McDavid could break Yzerman's non-Gretzky/Lemieux record of 155 points.

Also 65 goals while he’s at it. Hopefully Edmonton has to fight for a playoff spot all the way so they need him to go all out.

I told everyone that last season was the fluke season and not the "Canadian Division" year.

Worst on ice shooting % of his career by a mile last year.

The Canadian Division was McDavids actual level of ability.

Everyone is seeing it now.
Agreed. I made a number of posts on this topic last year (here's one example, but there are others): NHL.com Trophy Tracker - Hart Trophy

McDavid was playing at around a 140-145 point level last year, but was hampered by a terrible on-ice shooting percentage. McDavid shot well, and generated a ton of chances, but his linemates couldn't finish.

As I've said before - McDavid shouldn't get credit for the points he "should" have scored. But my take is 2022 was the fluke year. He's been playing at an 140+ point level for 2.5 seasons now. He missed out on 140 in 2021 due to the shortened season, and he had bad luck last year. (Though this shows that even if McDavid has a really bad year by his standards, he's still good enough to win the Art Ross).

I fully expect McDavid to slow down in the second half of this season (he's on pace for 160 points and it's very unlikely he gets there). So in that sense, the naysayers in this thread will be "proven right". But, barring injury, McDavid will almost certainly become the first player in 27 years to score 130 points, and he has a good chance at becoming only the 10th player in NHL history to reach 140.

McDavid has a legit shot at it. Kane isnt even back. He is superb at battling for A grade chances.

But its unteal that a 150 pt season is 17th best ever.

Gretzky 4 times 200 pt
And then like 3 more seasons over 180 pts..
Like, whats going on.
