McDavid heating up, what are odds on 150 points this season?

I told everyone that last season was the fluke season and not the "Canadian Division" year.

Worst on ice shooting % of his career by a mile last year.

The Canadian Division was McDavids actual level of ability.

Everyone is seeing it now.

Pretty hard to deny that now. 105 points in his last 53 games going back to the playoffs. That includes 42 goals so he’s clearly better than he was that season now I’d say.

Imagine how many takeaways/60 it requires to bridge the gap between 70 points and 40…..

Here's the likelihood of McDavid reaching 150 points (assuming he plays all 82 games), updated after each game:

View attachment 625441

"0" is the probability before the start of the season (around 7%). The low point was in late October, when McDavid "only" had 11 points in 7 games. The high point was mid December, when McDavid had 59 points in 30 games.

My model gives him virtually 100% chance of reaching 120, 95% chance of reaching 130, 69% chance of reaching 140, and a 4% chance of reaching 160.

For those curious about goals specifically - McDavid has a 92% chance of scoring 50 goals and a 29% chance of scoring 60 goals.
With a strong performance over the past three games (3 G, 4A), according to my model, McDavid is now up to a 96% probability of scoring 50 goals, and a 39% probability of scoring 60 goals.

I'm not going to re-post the graph, but McDavid now has a (season-high) 35% probability of reaching 150 points. My model gives him virtually 100% chance of reaching 120 points, 98% chance of reaching 130, 78% chance of reaching 140, and a 7% of reaching 160.

My model actually gives McDavid a higher chance of scoring at least 170, rather than failing to reach 120. To be clear, it's very unlikely he'll reach 170. Still, McDavid is more likely to reach a threshold that only Gretzky and Lemieux have reached (in a higher-scoring era), rather than fail to get 120 - a number that nobody but him topped last year.

(As I've mentioned many times before - this is on the assumption McDavid plays all 82 games. The probability of reaching any big milestones drops off rapidly if he misses more than a handful of games).

Apparently Mcdavid is on a 17 game point streak. It's hilarious how it's just not even brought up or recognized because he's so automatic. Pretty sure there was already a ton of talk of Mitch Marners point streak by the time it got to 17.
Part of it is probably Marner was chasing a Leafs record. McDavid is still 34* games shy of the Oilers record.

Marner had 32 points in his 23 game streak.

McDavid has 37 during this 17 game streak.

Isnt the oiler/nhl record 51 games?

First Google result says Wayne at 39 but yea it's 51.

  • 51 Games - Wayne Gretzky (Oct. 5, 1983 - Jan. 27, 1984) ...
  • 46 Games - Mario Lemieux (Oct. 31, 1989 - Feb. 11, 1990) ...
  • 39 Games - Wayne Gretzky (Nov. 3, 1985 - Jan. 25, 1986)

I think he had 153 points in those 51 games too.

Just unreal.

150pts in a season isn’t unheard of. Now if he put up 200 pts that would be impressive.
I love that you’re popping up in all these McDavid threads to try and tell us it isn’t impressive what McDavid is doing.

You and that Belfort guy need to grab a beer together.

72 points in 37 games haha soak it up Moenyhands it’s gonna be a long season in your world.

I posted in another thread a few weeks ago how one simple change has boosted McDavid’s already generational game this season.

It’s alarmingly simple.

He’s “learned” to shoot five hole. And he’s doing it a lot, with a lot of success this season. He probably has ~10 five hole goals already this season, whereas in years past he would’ve tried to go high or pass the puck in those situations.
