McDavid heating up, what are odds on 150 points this season?

October 5th was the first game of the season that year, too, so his streak might actually technically be even longer if you go back to the previous season.
Most likely.

I posted in another thread a few weeks ago how one simple change has boosted McDavid’s already generational game this season.

It’s alarmingly simple.

He’s “learned” to shoot five hole. And he’s doing it a lot, with a lot of success this season. He probably has ~10 five hole goals already this season, whereas in years past he would’ve tried to go high or pass the puck in those situations.
Its so effective too, he doesnt even open up to shoot, he just slides it there and theres nothing you can do about it.

Only problem is that Bedard is not even legal yet, therefore not technically allowed to hold McDavid’s beer yet haha
Its hockey canada, do they care about that?

If anyone is actually being serious about 150+ points not being ridiculous in 2023 just because Yzerman did it in the late 80s, then give your head a shake.

80s hockey while entertaining and fun if we're being honest is pure pond hockey.

There's no defensive strategy whatsoever, some of the D can't even skate properly backwards, lol. Just pure fire wagon hockey with far worse goaltending than today.

150pts in a season isn’t unheard of. Now if he put up 200 pts that would be impressive.
What Lames can even come close to that ? I'm sorry that franchise is pathetic , don't ever speak McDavid's name ever again. You're not worthy and its insulting when you even mention him. You're far too stupid to be speaking about him... its embarrassing

it is also a different league than what we've been used to through Crosby and Ovis prime. What I associate with the 80's is defensemen scoring 100. And 31 year old Josi got 96 points last year, 32 year old Karlsson is on pace for 100+. PPG players don't have to be elite anymore, etc. Scoring is near all time highs again.

So the best hockey player in the world setting marks not set since the 80's seems natural. Nothing to take away from McDavid though, he is the best hockey player in the universe.

The goaltending and defensive structures are still far better than they were in the 80s, though. If we start seeing the other top guys scoring 130+ in a single season (Kucherov, MacKinnon, Matthews, Drai), then we'll know we're reaching a point of no return for high scoring offense.

Mcdavid had his 8th career 5 point game yesterday. Gretzky at the same point of his career as Mcdavid had 71 5 point games. Okay, scoring was higher back in the day and everyone was putting 5 point games on the regular. The guy behind Gretzky is Mario with just 29. 3rd place is just 11 5 point games.

Mcdavid is great, you dont need to disrespect the handful of players greater than Mcdavid because of some era vs era garbage talking points. Each era had its advantages and disadvantages.

And 80s was obviously the easiest score of all time to score in.

Is there anyone here with a big brain that can calculate league scoring across seasons and rank the best points seasons from Gretzky onwards? Does McDavids highest scoring seasons compare to the great one or players from the dead puck era?

You're assuming I'm disrespecting Gretz and Mario. I'm not. I know how dominant Gretzky was compared to his peers (and then Mario) - it's why he put up so many more points than everyone else who were playing under the same conditions. But nobody has put up 150 in 27 years, so it's absolutely going to be a crazy feat to witness if 97 can accomplish it.

Arguably the best offensive stretch of hockey since the 80s was Mario in 2000-01. 35 goals, 76 points in 43 games, heart of the DPE, coming back from 4 years away. Yes, he had Jagr and peak Kovalev, but it's still mind-boggling. And Mario played over 24 minutes a game, at 35 years old.

Hockey Reference has their "adjusted points" stat that does a series of calculations to attempt to level things between eras.

I don't think his current season hasn't been updated after tonight's game.

Yep

..and in a era with less goals than today.

Young people loves to bring up the 80s with bad goaltendings.and bla bla to put down Mario Lemieux...

But think about that..

A 35 years.old Lemieux...after 4 years retirement....in the.worse era ever for goals.....scored 35 goals in 43 games and 76 points.

An absolute prime Mcdavid at 25 years.old..injury free...has 32 goals in 37 games so far..

You have right there all the.elements.to see that Mario Lemieux was a real phenom.

Really nothing against 97...but 66 was the beast!!

I do wonder what would happen if all scoring paces stayed the same (they won’t) and McDavid ended with 70+G/160+pts BUT Edmonton missed the playoffs.

Typically voters won’t give it to a guy who didn’t make the playoffs but at the same time how do you not vote for that kind of individual performance?

How valuable are you, really, if you miss the playoffs?

Yup. Everyone knows Mario was nuts. And during the dead puck era he was special. if he could have stayed healthy he smashes Gretzky's goal scoring record (well over 1000) and a bunch of other records also. But alas numbers are what matters at the end of the day and he just couldn't stay healthy enough. It's great to see what Mcdavid is doing though. I would love to see him break 155 points to be the only player outside of Gretzky and said Lemieux to score more in a season.

This isn’t a “diss” to Mario - the guy was obviously insane and what he did post cancer was mythical but I just wanted to point out that 99’s back troubles in the 90’s are well documented and the whole “what if” can go both ways.

Also, if the oilers didn’t have a corrupt owner the Oilers dynasty probably stays together into the mid 90’s and who knows how 99’s production would have differed.

Either way, absolutely blessed to have watched both live.
