Eichel is getting at least 8M per year, he really isn't that different skill-wise from McDavid as you guys claim.

Honestly I'd rather have the player who's marginally worse offensively who happens to play a way bigger physical game

McDavid taking a discount. 6M x 8 years. He will cash in through endorsements.

Or he can get more than 6m per year and still get endorsements.

I see McDavid getting just under 10 mil for 8 years. Something like 8mil for the 5 RFA years and 12 mil for the 3 UFA years.

And like you would be saying this if bufffalo drafted McDavid. McDavid >> Eichel

I honestly think McDavid wins the Art Ross, so I'm thinking 84m x 8 (making him the highest paid tied with Toews/Kane)

That's exactly what I want to happen. And for the contract to go right up to his first UFA year. Why not make it painful for Edmonton to retain the best player in the NHL?

Because a GMs job isn't to piss off other GMs just for the sake of it. That is exactly the reason this has never and will never happen. Not to mention ownership would never allow it... they have to work with each other all the time.

No one seems to get that.

This thread reminds me of how Stamkos would get 9, 10, 11 a season and people where so sure they were right then he ended up signing for 8.5.

Difference is Stamkos numbers have been going down the past few years.

McDavid just came off a 48pts in 46 games season as a 18 years old and with the talent he has it can only get even better from now on. He likely would have produced 80-85pts if not more had he not been injured. Won,t be surprised if he actually get 90-100pts this season. Kid is just unreal

I think you meant McDavid >= Eichel

Seriously though if Eichel went 1st rather than McDavid, his value would be a lot higher than McDavid's, that's pretty much the only reason why people say he's way better (yes I agree, McDavid is slightly better offensively) but that placement in the draft really affects this thread..

What if the endorsements are from Nike, McDonalds, Rogers, Canadian Tire, Gatorade etc?

He can leave some money on the table to keep the Oilers competitive

that's part of the reason why crosby didn't get max from pittsburgh.

You have to stop. Eichel is a freak talent, love having him. But McDavid is going to prove next season that he's generational. Eichel has the potential to be a dominant player in this league, but McDavid is going to run the league for the next 10 years.

If we locked up McDavid for $8.5X8 I'd be thrilled. I full expect him to cost more than that.

Eichel is awesome, a true franchise talent but I agree with you, I think that McDavid as long as he stays healthy will be a level above Eichel which is not a slight on Eichel, it just shows how incredible I think that McDavid will be.

Whatever it is, it will be for 8 years. They are RFAs so I don't think we'll see crazy high numbers that some say. McDavid will get more than Ekblad, but less than the UFA deals that Kane and Toews got for sure. The UFA years of the deal will be north of 10 AAV though.

I'm curious to see how Eichel does this year. I think this past season was not as good as he is capable of. Buffalo might be lucky and have Eichel be a bit of a slow starter in his career. They may sign him long term for close to what Ekblad got or less even.

I'd match. Only player in the league that I'd consider paying that much.

MacKinnon is a better comparable for Eichel than Ekblad until he proves otherwise.

That being said, McDavid is a weird one. I think his contract will depend largely on how he does over a full season when healthy. Obviously the comparable is Crosby but that was so long ago and a team first discount that it's irrelevant as well.
