Very few players in Sweden has skated much if at all on natural ice. Of course I have skated on a tennis court at winter, but such things don't matter. It is all about indoor ice and Germany can build it and build it anywhere.

In sweden, hockey is culturally significsnt though, so kids naturally want to try it.

We could build more rinks, but why do that if people don't care for it anyway? There's cheaper sports out there.

there aren't many, but imo the bigger problem is that kids can't play hockey without going to a rink. Kids play football (mainly), handball and basketball casually before they join a club. They can try it without committing to it, and if they like it play more seriously. Doing that in ice hockey isn't possible, so kids have to know they're dead set on hockey before they're playing basically, which doesn't help kid participation.

Valid point.

We grow up playing knee hockey with mini sticks at home and during breaks at school. Trading hockey cards at lunch. Watching team Canada games in class.

Often you go on field trips to learn to ice skate and rollerblade, like we do with swimming.

Then ball hockey with plastic sticks in gym and road hockey with friends and family. By that age, 8-10, if you're interested you've played a ton already and likely are already playing organized hockey. Lots start at 5-6.

It's not just about the rinks, for sure.

Sure there are culture in it. But Germany still got alot of hockey culture. In the USA hockey is like the 3-5 sport. I think it can't be worse in Germany, at least not if they get a program.

Players are tired after going all-in against Canada yesterday.

Canada has a lot more talent than Sweden and to pressure Canada they had to put in an enormous effort yesterday ...

In Wikegård and Mårts "dream world" players are "professional" and should be able to go 110% each game . In reality it's not like that ...

What we see now was built up yesterday ...

There are 330 million people in the United States
