In general you don't get noticeably much more whining from the Finnish fans.

Only after every game that has been lost. Swedish referees, change them, Russian referees, change them, Putin, change him... Czech or Finnish referees would have been better for this game then?

I didn't follow the game, but Kontiola's gif is a clear penalty. That's not a body to body hit. Hands were too high, and contact was made with the area of neck and head of the Czech player. He didn't use his momentum, he deliberately used his hands to knock down the defenseman.

Well, I think memory is selective - and short: now only for two years running there have been at times rather over the top complaints, but I do fully believe that other nationalities wouldn't have been much better. In general you don't get noticeably much more whining from the Finnish fans.

Anyway, I fully believe that there were some really bad calls (though that Kontiola penalty is borderline in an IIHF tournament), but for me the important thing is that the Czechs were clearly better yesterday, they created many more chances and dominated the 5-5 game. That was quite surprising: we just weren't ready and it was the Czechs that were supposed to be jittery...

It seemed to me that they finnally found the way how not be nervous of the crowd and transform it to smth. positive.

Yeah! Czechs had more fire power and used their opportunities better... better team will face now Canada. And Rinne's couple goals were takeable.

Pitty how some finnish spoiled the topic with crying. Thanks to all those decent finnish fans tho.

All of you calling for NHL refs....did you EVER look in NHL teams GDTs - especially in playoff? At least one side just KNOWs that REFFS screwed them. And whats more funy? Very often BOTH sides see clearly, that refs are doing anything in their power to DUMP their team...

---------

Still for me best match so far (sure, i missed many NHL games and maybe im biased coz czech team in czech capitol....) and I thought it was up'n'down hockey as it should be. Also when 3:3, I was veeeery afraid well end in shoot-out, where Rine would tear Pavs apart...

The reffing in this match was a total disgrace! The refs gave +3 goals to Czechs.

-Kemppainen vs Erat, should have been 2 mins for slashing.
-Hietanen's goal should have been counted, or at minimum 2 mins to Czech's Dman for holding the stick.

Well, for example the US game was rather whinefree, or the 2012 and 2013 tournaments which were disappointing etc. etc. I don't think this is an issue. (Of course Mertaranta is a bit of an agitator with his blue-white glasses...)

Indeed, and now in the semi-final they have nothing to lose - hopefully there will be a small miracle on ice! (Have to say that Canada has looked so formidable that a semi-miracle is needed...)

2010 was the last time when Finland didn't make the semifinals. Can't win every time. I'm not mad :)

Congrats to Czech. Jagr is still a beast. :yo:

That's true plus some Finnish magazines. Misery sells

Cba to read everything that's going on in this thread but i do have to jump in and express my disappointment at the refs, once again.

It's just amazing how much the refs hate us. Never, ever, are the calls going the other way like they're going now.

Im not too pissed about the Kontiola call. I mean there are elements of interference for sure but it's not that clear. Probably a 50/50 call in this tournament. In the NHL that's not called 9 times out of 10.

Im fine with the other penalty in the 2nd period too. You expect home team to get those kind of chances.

But what im PISSED about is what happened during the 1st powerplay that took the wind off our sails. I don't know who it was but a Czech player slashed the stick out of our forwards hands when he wasn't looking. That made the goal possible and gave them the momentum.

What should've happened is a penalty for Czechs (that's 100% called in every league), gain even more momentum from the upcoming PP and have a good chance to go to the 3rd with the lead. That's so much better than down by 1.

Im tired of this ******** tbh.

Neither one of those things should've happened. Erat stick lift was really weak and Kontiola shouldn't have put his hand+stick up.

No if my fellow Finns would just give it a rest and stop listening to Finnish media that would be great.

Yes, that really surprised me as well. To be honest, I thought that of all the teams we could have played against in the quarters, Finland would be the toughest to beat, and thought the Finns were slight favourites. Our team has a lot of heart, but makes lots of mistakes (especially in D), and I thought that Finland would be best able to punish those errors. Also, the Finnish coach has a very good reputation in the Czech Republic. He coached Lev Prague to the KHL finals, and is widely regarded as a top quality coach, so I feared that he'd come up with something clever to exploit Czech weaknesses.

The Czech players also said that the Czech support is so intense, more intense than in NHL playoffs, that the players are in danger of not controlling their emotions and go a little crazy, wanting to give the fans what they want, offensive play and goals, and neglecting D. I am glad they (mostly) controlled themselves. I thought they were particularly good in the first period, and it was a travesty that they only scored one goal in the first 20 minutes.

You must be blind, russian referee or a troll if you didn't see Erat's slashing. All the players and refs have said that it should have been penalty.

Actually i just watched it on mtv3.fi and it looked weak as hell. Even Nupe couldn't figure out what the right call should've been.

And even if it was a penalty, those things go uncalled all the time. If it was the other way around you'd be saying the same thing.

No, not like that.

What happened in the game was our forward was trying to block a passing lane, so he had one hand on his stick. Then the Czech player comes from behind and does the same what happened in your video.

Difference is there's no way you're supposed to hold on to your stick harder when you have just one hand on it and block a lane on the PK. There isn't even an argument.

In your video that's not the case, and although that could've easily been a penalty it's not as bad as this one.

Nice try anyways

Better team won.

Thing that put me off the most was to see Aaltonen on the ice in the last minute.

Good luck to the next game. You're going to need it.

Yeah, beforehand I saw the enormous crowd support as an overall minus for the Czech team - that they would be overemotional and nervous, and that we would be very effective and ice cold from the go. But especially in the 1st period it seemed the other way round: we were awfully shaky and slow and the Czechs played quite aggressive but absolutely controlled hockey. And they got obviously positive energy from the crowd. Nice to see, but not against Finland...

Considering Canada's results and quality of our team we can definetely call it small miracle (jesus I hate that word "miracle"). I still cant believe thath you can go throught tis tourney without loosing any point....Its somehow weird. There are teams like Latvia, Belarus which seem to me being in full strenght +- 2,3 players. And this Team Canada demolish them even more than they did in Olympics. I just dont get it.....

Agreed on that. The only bad call from refs to our advantage and not justified. Refs returned the favor when Simon (or Kovar?) was running solo on Rinne and two your D-men just swepped him down. To which i said - we used that unfair advantage and you didnt (altough ours was bigger - yet Simon COULD have scored too).

But hey, your team is I think leader in making semifinals (at least xx years now, no other team made semis more often) - so cant you just wish other teams the joy of that too, at least sometimes? :)

I had the same feeling and I am very happy for it. After all this how it should it to be, isnt it? Away team nervous of crowd and home team pumped as hell receiving the energy from people. It already twisted here to rudiculous discussion in TVs that crowd is too much loud so people were little bit more silent after first games. Lets see how resistant are canadians. I hope this theory proves correct and shows that it is a big shame that such atmosphere slowly disappear from a lot of hockey arenas.....Anyway, everybody who sometimes watched CZ team can confirm, that this team plays with more intense.....

Kontiola is the puck carrier, he is not a puckless player interfering with a puckless player. He is receiving a hit from a defenseman, as a puck carrier. Learn the damn rules. Puck carrier against the guy who comes to hit him is NOT interference, ever, in any situation.

And no I wasn't listening to Mertaranta, I was watching in Canada on TSN1 because I live here in Canada.

What that replay shows is a HORRIBLE refereeing mistake that gave Czech a free pass to the semifinals.

So Kontiola is the puck carrier but he doesn`t have the puck anymore?

Weak or not, you're not allowed to do that.

Again, difference with a regular slash and this one is he's blocking a passing lane with one hand on his stick.

He obviously doesn't have the puck or trying make himself open for scoring. There's no reason why anyone should be touching his stick in that situation. You're preventing him from doing his job on the PK, that's interference.

IIRC i have never seen this kind of play go uncalled. It doesn't happen often but when it does it's usually very noticeable which makes it even easier to call.

I don't believe none of the refs didn't see it. They just choked and that's it.

Whose to say we don't lose if that's called. You guys could've won either way. :)

And yeah im kinda glad Czechs made it to semis. If there's any team to lose to it's you guys when you're the home team. Can't hate Jagr

But of course the frustration is real, since last year's final had horrible refereeing go against us and again last game against Russia the call on Komarov was ridicilous. You'd think enough is enough for one team :shakehead
