Because the Habs are recently in the business of trading better, younger assets for older ones on worse contracts as long as there is some potential of increased intangibles. In this case, Rick Nash seems like he might fit the bill.

The contract is bad for Nashville. Montreal gets the older player, but does save some in cap. If Weber chooses to retire before the end of the deal, it's all on Nashville.

Depending on what he asks for, I can think of worse situations for the Blackhawks than a sign-and-trade with Panarin for Pacioretty+something.

They get a great scorer with solid 2-way play, and up to 4 million dollars less cap hit depending on what Panarin demands. For a win-now team trying to restock it's depth, it would make some sense.

Assuming MTL would be willing to accept 7million+ on the cap with Panarin, of course.

Doubt it happens but....

Pacs (4.5) for Panarin (7) works for me. But we would have too many smaller players.

Too many small players?

I hope all Canadian-team GMs think like you. It'll ensure that none of the 7 win a cup anytime soon.

lol dont get too personal. Its something thats been known in mtl for ages. The habs wanna get bigger. Adding smaller players defeats that purpose.

yeah we picked up that guy playing on the number one pair for team canada. i guess babcock and that whole crew dont have a clue either .

Don't fool yourself, the same results would have happened with subban out there instead of weber. Some say that he'd be even better because he tends to shine in big games.

lol The canadians would have won even if Gallagher played in for any of those forwards asides that top line. What are you trying to suggest?

its to bad that the team canada management and coaching staff do not seemingly share the same view. but i guess what do those lads really know ?

I absolutely love Ehlers. I'd do it.

id second that. i dont know what we could get him signed for but i really dont think we have seen the best of trouba yet either. and this is no slight on pacs or beaulieu because im content sitting with them to.

Plus for Winnipeg, playing Beaulieu with likely Byfuglien would pay off huge, imagine Pacioretty-Little/Scheifele-Wheeler... Oh my god

If Subban was on TC, there's ZERO chance he would be playing the minutes Weber is playing. Babcock would be using him like he uses Burn (powerplay specialist, lots of offensive zone time, little defensive zone time). Why? Because Weber is better defensively. Subban also wouldn't be able to play his high risk high reward game. And thats probably why they didn't take him.

I know this is one of hf's most notable jokes and it still makes me laugh today, but when it was first packaged it was better than most people thought. One case of habs fans figuring out their assets in a very lucid and reasonable way.
