This is a really weird take. I suppose if you like you can conclude that all sports are stupid. I'd have imagined that anyone choosing to participate in a forum like this had chosen not to do that and agreed to join in the idea that they are fun to take a little bit seriously.

TSN does that, it isn't their fault that some people can't keep it in perspective.

To re-evaluate, it's more so bullies being emboldened by twitter than TSN. To your "a little bit seriously"...TSN's directive of profit and growth has turned this U-20 tournament into the super bowl. From forced interviewing bleary-eyed, just-woken teens who were cut, to harping "gold is Canada's birthright, and everyone one of these boys is going to make a big impact in the NHL," whipping up national fervor over a junior tournament.

Too true. TSN's created a juggernaut, one that isn't too friendly whenever "home team" (in TSN's case, forever Canada) comes up short.

But hey, check out those viewer ratings, and ad revenue! To hell with the mental impact it puts on teens, there's profits to make!

Hm, I like their coverage of the tournament and don't mind them making it into something more epic than it otherwise would be. I don't agree with putting a camera on young players who are cut from the team, but I've never heard anything like the quote you offer. I'm guessing you just made that up? Guys like Ferraro and MacKenzie are quite realistic in their expectations and respect for the level of competition.

It is literally their job to hype the tournament. I don't see them crossing the line in doing it (unlike the news media, maybe a better thing to worry about...)

It's not a direct quote, it's the general sentiment of the coverage.

Direct your anger at the people who are blaming the players. That isn't TSN. The idea that TSN are making people do it by making them care too much about the outcome is crazy. By that logic we should just shut down sports because some idiots riot when their team loses.

That's exactly what TSN does, though.

Not to you or me, or most rational people, but we've all seen the ramped up coverage and overblown rhetoric drummed out by TSN every year, how we can all tune in over the holidays and watch Canada "take home the gold". Anything short of this is seen as a complete disaster, so you can imagine how the players feel every time they make a slight mistake, or cost their team a goal or a win. I can't imagine how they must feel right now. Hopefully most have already put it behind them, though I'm sure that's a tall order.

If everyone could just calm down and remember it's supposed to be a tournament showcasing (some of) the best teenage hockey players in the world, and not some high-tension all-or-nothing series with national pride on the line, we'd be a lot better for it.

The Moderating crew here is significantly more present than efficient than on Instagram.
They're also infinitely smarter, savvier, knowledgeable, efficient and, of course, handsome.

O rly? Handsome? And that's without even employing me.

TSN is Super Bowling the thing out of proportion
and then in advance of play Ugly Canadians pronounce favorable judgement
A nation pinning hopes on teenagers leads to angst and unsettled emotion
It's not that big of a deal and no need for national lament

Did the CBC cause the Canuck riots?

Again, blame the idiots reacting stupidly, not the excellent coverage. I don't want another buried tournament that you might find a crappy stream to watch if you are lucky. This is the only "best on best" we get annually (or ever with the NHL/IIHF/IOC all too greedy to allow any senior competition) and you want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I was disappointed with the loss, but ready to move on and enjoy the rest of the tournament -- probably some good cheap tickets to the semis available now that all the half-assed "fans" (I guess just of Canada, not hockey) are done with it. It's great to cheer for your team, but being so tribal and attaching so much importance to it is grotesque.

i think disabling the comments was the right move... that statement though was over the top... maybe even telling that some of it hit him. however he has all the options about handling it in the best way... be it by ignoring, or just simply not doing social media. it just looks like he wants to snap back or control the internet...

people on the internet are f***ing morons and will always overreact to this tournament.

we had the same shit with virtanen a few years ago and it turned out to have zero bearing on his nhl career.

Sounds like some of you only go on this site and maybe check your Myspace. The internet and social media are cess pools of people being assholes to each other because of anonymity. Wouldn't have it any other way.

If he wants to be a pro he's going to get used to this stuff. Shutting down the comments is fine, keep some of it away from you. He will also need to work on his penalty shots if he wants to be a pro.

Wow. I thought he was a terrible choice for captain too but some of the comments made directly to him are insane.

Couldn't agree more.

Is anyone really surprised with what happens just here on these boards sometimes? We have a whole generation of keyboard warriors who feel they can say anything they want to. Berating a 19 year old kid for a game is just par for the course. He was of course the only one out there on the ice or behind the bench.

Absolutely disgusting behavior by some fans. And this type of scapegoating of one player happens every time Canada loses. The whole team is responsible not one player.
These are kids playing a game that should be fun. There are a lot of morons out there who have no concept of decency or perspective.

He's a good player, but diving is not leadership. it was a little embarassing.

OK let's see, let's take a legendary warrior like Doug Gilmour. Do you know how many times he dove during his career? A lot. Bear in mind it was a time where the refs were calling nothing and hooking happened all over the place but I have seen him dove many times so that he would somehow force the refs to call a penalty at crucial times. And sometime it did work. But he was more skilled at it than a kid like Contois. Carbonneau admited to it too on TV.

Nah, he was diving a lot. It was embarassing.

It's fine, he's a kid. Hopefully he learns. And it also by no means justifies giving him a hard time, whether it be by instagram or whatever.
