I am disapointed at the performance of this years team but I am not ashamed of them at all, they did their best and tried their best and don't have to be here if they don't want to.

These idiot fans spewing this shit at Comtois...................them I am ashamed of.

Social media - self-aggrandizing "celebrities" preening for their dimwitted followers, and lowlifes anonymously mocking and harassing sincere people.

Don't bother disabling comments, Max. Close your accounts.

There are definitely differences in cultures. Would you also claim that the average Canadian is the same as the average Japanese or Venezuelan?

In terms of people being dicks or not? Yes.

We're not talking culture. We're talking assh0les

People suck sometimes. Leave the kid alone and go outside.

Totally disagree. It doesn't make it right. Real Canadian adults would be totally disgusted if their son or daughter was attacked like this young man was. Gretzky had problems scoring on penalty shots. The coach made the decision to chose Comtois knowing all the pressure in the world was on him with our Gold or nothing attitude. If DiPietro never performed as well as he did this game was over in the second period. The Finns were the better team in this game.

On a morality level no its not right. But it is simply the reality and you can't deny it. I mean we say that as adults we don't condone this behavior, but just goto a local kid midget or bantam game and you will see that there is a large population of those same adults willing to lash out and attack young kids playing the game. Its part of the expected role one plays in this public setting.

Yep, Virtanen was the target that year. I'd argue he did more to deserve some criticism but it was way over the top. Some fans just can't handle losing. It's ugly.

Virtanen absolutely deserved it, screwed his teammates and crushed their dreams with absolutely selfish and unnecessary penalties. There was one play where he had already taken a penalty and was pissed so he goes and two hand chops a player and breaks their stick in half taking two penalties in the same play. He admitted after he did it because he was pissed. If you look at his PIMs in junior I'm sure he was doing this a lot.

Harassing Comtois or anyone else just because they lost is extremely stupid. Even with the diving at least you can say he was doing it to try and help the team. If someone costs the team because they care more about themselves than their teammates in a huge tourny like this, I have no tolerance for that.

I was less than impressed with Comtois this tournament. I thought his antics were unbecoming of a Canadian captain and really took a disliking to him.

Having said that......for someone to take the time to abuse him on his social media account.....truly sad what society is becoming. The internet “tough guy” thing truly shows how sad people are deep down.

I have seen it for decades in minor hockey. It's worse now even with the efforts to combat bullying. We have been Rangers fans 40 years and season ticket holders last 20. We see this stuff every game with adults usually half loaded yelling at players. Like we paid the bucks to watch them turn into idiots in an arena. Your correct. You cannot idiot proof everything these days.

This is a huge exaggeration, just like the Comtois hate. Virtanen didn't have a great tournament. The whole team didn't. I'm sure you've forgotten Marner's selfish penalty and tendency to try to do too much himself. It wasn't one player's fault. Virtanen was the whipping boy that year for the many people who need simplistic explanations.

In person heckling at a game is one thing.

Opening your phone and seeing a couple thousand messages from people you don’t know telling you to kill yourself (no I don’t know that was said but is pretty common these for people to say these days) and that you let your country down etc. is a whole different ballgame.

Fans need to learn that when the game is over the game is over. Move on and try again next time.

Most of the cowards that picked on him in social media would crap their pants if they had to face him in person. They would act like they were best friends to his face.

It really isn't at all, Virtanen took many stupid penalties that tourny and lead team Canada with 10 PIMs , 4 more than the next person on the team and had 1 assist in the whole tourney. Marner lead the team in points and had 4 PIMs.

Precisely.....this is why I can’t stand this “internet tough guy” age we are in. Call me old fashioned, but I miss the days in which if you wanted to run your mouth to someone, you had to do it in person and risk actual consequences.

Blame TSN for hyping this stupid tournament up to an asinine level.
This is a really weird take. I suppose if you like you can conclude that all sports are stupid. I'd have imagined that anyone choosing to participate in a forum like this had chosen not to do that and agreed to join in the idea that they are fun to take a little bit seriously.

TSN does that, it isn't their fault that some people can't keep it in perspective.

You realize hf is social media?

I never understand this comparison...

This is an underground hockey forum and niche place. Facebook and Twitter exposes peoples real lives, you see their faces, their families, what they do in real life.

We don't see peoples real lives or faces here. There is no comparison really. It's like saying Apples and Oranges are both fruit, which might be true but completely different from one and other.

In the context that user used social media, HF really isn't that.

This is the result of that stupid media hype in Canada surrounding those kids. They are presented like superstars and the media makes giant stories out of everything the do on and off the ice. They make a much larger fuss than the media does in Germany with the soccer national team during the world championships. Seriously. These kids carry a country on their shoulders and are expected to score on a penalty shot in overtime. If they don't live up to these sky hight expectations, they get crucified.
Everybody needs to just get back to earth, really. As far as hockey in Canada is concerned, other nations can play too. And you just can't have the best junior team any more year after year. Sometimes Canada wins and sometimes somebody else will. Look at the NHL draft. Canada used to dominate, but these times are long gone. There are lots of American, Swedes, Finns, Czechs, Russians that go early. Swiss guys too, more and more. Even some germans. The domination is gone.

Just leave those kids alone, the media needs to drive the hype machine down.

Sure Marner's the better player and showed amazing talent in that tournament, that's not the point. They also play different games, Virtanen's game will yield more penalties. They don't collect hitting stats that I know of, but I'm sure he threw a LOT more hits than Marner. Talking about selfish and stupid plays, I'm saying Marner was part of that too, but those who need a simple narrative have to boil it down to one player to blame. Virtanen then, Comtois now.

Correct. No fear of a punch in the yap makes people brave. It's easy to be a little dog yapping behind the fence with your tail between your legs. We were at a Jr. B game and a man yelled something derogatory at the losing team on their way out. One of the bigger players almost climbed a cement wall to get him.
Never saw a person so scared and apologetic in my life. I almost ran away and I had said nothing
