This isn't the first time idiotic fans did something stupid on social media.

Let's not forget Vancouver and their death threats to Mike Matheson after he chokeslammed Pettersson. I hate our fan base.

Meh, can't really pin this one on Vancouver fans....they cheered their hearts out, even chanted Dipietro's name after the game as a show of support. Besides, just learned earlier today it was a Canucks prospect in Utunen who scored the dagger yesterday.

Here's hoping he doesn't get railroaded out of town or dealt away to another team as a result.

People need to blame the coaches before the players... Can't say that was Canada's best run at a medal.

Poor game against the Russians and you could just see they weren't ready to face off against the other top teams in the tournament.

He’s also essentially a child still. These guys are babies who are still years away from understanding things as a mature adult. Many of the comments came from 40-50 year old men who should know better. Who should know that they also were ignorant and niave at that age and even years after.

Indeed. Shutting down the comments is actually a very wise thing to do. God forbid, had I been in the same situation at his age, I would've probably just replied to many of the hate posts with equal responses which would've made things even worse.

I said something like that and got called classless by everybody when I wasn't trying to be classes. One example that disgusted me was Lucic planned on bringing the Cup to Jericho Beach, but had a small party after people graffitied the church he went to which in my opinion is a disgusting thing to do. Sure they beat the Canucks, but Lucic wasn't giving Vancouver the finger by doing that, he was sharing it with the city.

I'd continue but I'm not trying to bash Vancouver, it's just what happens happens. I just want Canucks fans to just be grateful for things and show more kindness towards their passions.

I wouldn't harass him, but I can't say i didn't feel a bitter sweetness to him losing as the captain. That diving stuff needs to not be there when you rep the maple leaf.
Most of the so called hockey fans trolling this kid probably played road hockey with rubber boots on and used a horse bun as a puck. What a bunch of friggin morons.

To be fair, any kind of child celebrity, athlete etc... its all the same and nobody can really escape social media. When you're in that public eye, you're going to be judged on your actions, fairly and/or unfairly regardless of your age.

Even though, I don't think he represented Canada that well with his dives and such, this is way out of line. This is a kid who played for his country for free and wanted to win. He helped us win gold the year before. I hate the sports fans who lose it on these platforms tagging these guys and taking whatever cheap shots they can (fantasy sports brings out the worst of it). Not as extreme, but it reminds me of the cover a Vancouver newspaper put up about Virtanen (who had one of the worst games I've seen by a leader in a Canada jersey) and just trashed him. At the time, and still do think that stuff is way out of line. NHL guys I get (with newpapers trashing them on their covers), that's part of the deal when you play a sport for 7 figures a year, these kids volunteered their time to try to accomplish something. That shouldn't be forgotten.

I agree with the general idea of your post, but a million "kids" would have gladly "volunteered" to play. Don't act like they made some great moral act for Canada.

Dude, a guy told him he wished Comtois would die of aids. Lots of biggotery because he's French too. It's not about having a thick skin, it's just unacceptable.

OMG some random dude said I should get aids. I'm going to cry while playing professional hockey for a living

Racism and stuff like that is bad, so I will let give you that

They're kids dude. Being that kind of ******* to a teenager online is really disgusting behavior
So do you think this is bullying a 19-year old kid? If not how is it any different? How does it differ from people in the arena booing players on the opposing team?

Totally disagree. It doesn't make it right. Real Canadian adults would be totally disgusted if their son or daughter was attacked like this young man was. Gretzky had problems scoring on penalty shots. The coach made the decision to chose Comtois knowing all the pressure in the world was on him with our Gold or nothing attitude. If DiPietro never performed as well as he did this game was over in the second period. The Finns were the better team in this game.

This. Whether or not this type of thing becomes the new norm depends on how sports fans as a whole evolve with social media.
Right now it’s up in the air, criticism is one thing but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be respectful. I hope for the best but it’s not looking good at the moment.

Sad. One thing to criticise a player on a message board or among your friends but I have never understood those who personally seek someone up and attack them, online or in real person.

There are idiots in any population.
He knows that, he can't be where he is from and not know it.

It was just a chance to take a shot at Canada, which there is a group of about 4 Russian posters who always do it here.

That's all that was, wasn't a serious post.

Unfortunately the internet is full of idiots. Pretty disgraceful as a Canadian to see people solely blame the loss on him and wish some of the things on him that those people did. Brutal.

I actually don't get the criticism...

Comtois was 1 of Canadas best players at the tournament, and he was a big part on last years gold medal team.

The coach made the decision to have Comtois shoot, idk that he would have been my 1st choice with guys like tippet and what not on the roster.
Players miss shoot out attempts all the time... try going out there in front of your country in 1 of the biggest hockey tournaments in the world and score.... its not easy, specially vs world class goalies.

Hell go back to juniors, and dominate and before you know it hell be back in the NHL.

Good on Comtois for closing comments. Too bad he has to live with a legion of idiots that have nothing better to do.
