He's a good player, but diving is not leadership. it was a little embarassing.

Agreed. I don't mind it in the NHL, when an Av dives I think 'OK, they have to try and gain an advantage because the other team's doing it too'. But when you play for Canada you play with honor and dignity.

TSN created the WJC monster and turns these kids into heros for this tournament. They put impossible expectations on them year after year (note - Im not really talking about the actual analysts, but more the tournament marketing hype). The public in turn seems to forget these are kids and treats them like the Olympic team.

You can't be serious. In any competition a competitor will try to gain an advantage. Don't overreact. The glory for winning definitely ranks over the honor and dignity.

Well in fairness, all but one of this team were 18 or over so they are adults.

Having said that, the abuse Comtois has taken is pathetic and those people should be ashamed of themselves.

I agree with the general idea of your post, but a million "kids" would have gladly "volunteered" to play. Don't act like they made some great moral act for Canada.
Other kids would do it, but he's there and representing the country and not being paid for it. They still sacrificed a month of their time to try to accomplish something for this country and were not getting a financial reward. The only thing it might help for some is their draft stock (or in a very rare case like Eberle get him an endorsement). Considering all but 2 players on Canada are drafted, they don't really gain anything in value by being their outside the chance at a gold medal. It doesn't help them financially at all.

Agreed.

Don't get me wrong. I love this tournament. I certainly look forward to it more than even the Stanley Cup playoffs. At the same time people should remember these are amateurs. They should not have the same expectations placed on them that the pros do.

You realize hf is social media?
Message boards/forums generally aren't classified as social media. We are all here under pseudonyms, and only reveal our identity to people if we choose to. Places like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have the expectation that you are representing yourself with accurate information. Message boards tend to pre-date what we now view and have labeled as social media.

Kids aren't being paid under the table by Hockey Canada to play at the World Juniors. Has shady stuff happened in D1 and the CHL, absolutely, but Hockey Canada and USA Hockey aren't paying kids to be there. They are government run entities whose books would reveal stuff like that.

There's pressure, and there's being **** on. Bombarding his social media will not make him a better hockey player.

Unless you were talking about the tournament in general, in which case feel free to disregard.

Talking about the tournament.

I dont think anyone has a right to affect his personal life.

You act as if it hurt any them financially, and wasnt a lifelong goal of his for his entire life. Dont gain anything in value? How about the life experience that he will never forget for the rest of his life. Unfortunately he may not want to think about this for a while. But years down the road, he will hopefully look back and be extremely grateful for the opportunity

My point is people should keep this in mind before just trashing a kid who donated his time to try to bring you enjoyment in an international tournament on his social media. That isn't something he should be signing up for just by representing his country. This isn't an athlete making 7 figures a year who deals with that stuff. When you get paid like that, heavy public criticism is part of the game. It shouldn't be with 19 year old amateur athletes who have donated their time to play in this tournament. Yes, it's a great opportunity and he'll probably have great memories about the previous gold he won.

Forget that the criticisms are hurtful, the first problem is that they just aren't true.

Outside of diving, which was an issue but even that's been exaggerated, he played quite well.

I generally resist this sort of accusation (which can be all too cheap) but I'm starting to buy the notion that the mob singling him out is reflecting an anti-francophone attitude because I can't see any other account for it.

How do you know this? The whole meaning of “under the table” means it isn’t on the books.

Again, let’s not be naive here. Hockey Canada and Hockey USA certainly have perks

Unfortunately, they are wearing the Red Maple Leaf on the front of the jersey. The pressure is going to be much higher, especially with the NHL balking at the Olympics.

Great to read how everyone condems the kind of abuse he got. It was unbelievable to hear/read comments about his first language. A cultural minority in canada people are still allowed to crap on without any accountability whatsoever or generalized sense of outrage. I mean, what else was he supposed to do to be more "canadian"? Im sure he would have been a "great canadian" if they would have won the gold. So hypocritical makes me sick.

How do you know they are outside of baseless speculation. They get free track suits and uniforms. But, there is no evidence of Hockey Canada paying CHL players to play in the WJC.

... And what about the Russians and other countries ?

But there is no reason to trash any young players on social medias hidden behind nicknames and avatars. Very gutless.

Your argument is just as invalid as there isn’t proof they aren’t.

Having worked for the government for a long time....you’re naive if you think “government run entities” aren’t doing off the books stuff daily.

Further, since when is Hockey Canada a branch of, or under the umbrella of the federal government?

After the hit against Heinola I'm not not feeling any empathy for him sorry
I can tell already you won't care, but there was nothing wrong in that hit. I hope your Heinola is ok.

Good luck the rest of the way, I like your chances.
