Speculation: Matthews to California team for two 1sts?

In no universe is Knies worth Misa
How about the 9th, Muk and Musty
Rumors are the Leafs were looking for a top 10 pick, roster player and a prospect
Knies is exactly what the Sharks need, and there's no point in having Misa be a 3rd liner.

Would be hilarious if the Leafs traded Matthews to San Jose for #2, #9 and next years San Jose 1st.

Then.....draft day.....Matthew Knies for #4 and rights to Tuch.

Resign Tuch

Draft
1st - McKenna
2nd - Stenberg
4th - Reid
9th - Carels/Verhoeff/Rudolph/Smits

Walk away from the draft with a brand new rebuild.

Retain Willy as their veteran leader alongside Tavares and Tuch.

Move forward with the following youth assets:

McKenna
Stenberg
Cowan

Reid
2nd D prospect

AA

San Jose 1st 2027

That's certainly laughable

Leafs can't trade Matthews for picks. They need to make the playoffs next two years.

That said, his value definitely dropped with how meh he's been the past two years, and no guarantee he will ever get back to who he was before.

I think if you’re making 3x top 10 picks this year and come away with a young A+ prospect it really takes the sting out of not having your 1sts the next two years

If Matthews has shown any hesitance about sticking around and this offer is on the table you have to pull the trigger.

Don’t let this turn into a Marner situation

I agree, I thought this situation was hilarious yesterday too

You have to add signing Robertson for Matthews money though

And bobrovsky.

Would be WILD

I think a lot are overvaluing Matthews. 1st - did you not just watch the Carolina hurricanes with no superstars and the highest caphit of 9.5 mil just win the cup. One nhl player doesn’t impact the game like other sports. 2nd Matthews health and it’s likely chronic 3rd Matthews best days are behind him. Go check superstars like Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Ovie,, they all had their best years before 25. 4th and maybe more importantly Matthews has underwhelmed every playoff year. You think after 10 years Matthews will all of a sudden be a playoff monster, good luck.

Up north Marner was a playoff dud

Down south Marner is a conn Smyth lock year to year

Marner had 3 goals and 7 assists in 10 gp vs Colorado and carolina
Marner had 7 goals and 12 assists in 12 gp vs Utah and Anaheim. (Both those teams goaltendung was atrocious)

Matthews at 45% is better than Hischier at 253% which is better than the theoretical ceiling of Michael Misa which is 89% of that.

The numbers don't lie.

(your post reminded me of this)

Berger wrote in March that a source told him to bet on Matthews being traded to Anaheim, LA or Utah this summer (link). I wonder if there's a feeling that Matthews will waive only if it's to a southwest team close to where he grew up. I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor is from the same source (notice that he gave 3 possibilities again) and he's referring to Anaheim or LA again.

LA needs him most, what with Kopitar retired. I can see Holland offering the two 1sts as a lowball first offer, probably not expecting Toronto to accept, but encouraging them to make a counteroffer.
Yes and we counteroffer with a 3rd rd pick for Byfield...LA has 0 assets to bring Matthews there

I really hope Sharks stay away... obviously Matthews is a good player but he will be wanting a 7 year deal in a couple seasons and probably ask for 20ish mill a year. Unreal for him getting that contract at 30/31 years old but awful for the team.

Would be interesting Lol

Imagine walking away from the draft with

Misa
Mckenna
Stenberg
One of the dmen or Bjork

Plus a later pick.

Would be interesting

Misa, #2, #9, and #27 would be the sort of trade a team makes for McDavid, not Matthews.

Given how Matthews' played the last 2 years, Misa and #9 (or #2 if the Leafs really pushed for pry-away value) would be the sort of trade value that I think he could pull right now if he was traded.

Anything more and the Sharks would likely be better off just keeping their picks and building for the long term.

Even then, 3 years from now I could see a world in which Michael Misa on his own would have more value than Matthews, to say nothing of the 9th-overall pick (or 2nd-overall).

And for those grumbling, that Misa + #9 would be quite a bit more value than Tkachuk got.

I think Matthews for #2 and #9 would be more or less fair in a vacuum if Leafs aren't sure Matthews will re-sign with them.

Except that it won't happen.

Not having their own first-round pick in the next two years means that the Leafs have exactly zero incentive to willingly tank.

And trading Matthews for 2 picks without going out to get more help would be exactly that, tanking.

I’m not a Leafs fan. It’ll take three 1sts plus top prospect and another bolt on pick or prospect or signed roster player.

It’s something I wish Pittsburgh would do with how much draft capital we have. Swing for the fences.

Why would the Sharks trade anything of value for Matthews when they have Celebrini and Misa? They need to swing for a top defenseman or stick to building through the draft. Matthews can let his contract expire and come here if he wants to bad enough.
Which will free up cap space for McDavid to come home and play for the Leafs that summer
