Ouch this really sucks for calgary, is this the new thing where players do not want to play in canada?

If this really becomes a problem the league will have to figure something out, or maybe toronto and mtl should stop keeping half the league afloat see how long certain small markets last.

If I'm the NHLPA, in order for the owners to get the "franchise tag" the players would get a year reduction in RFA years for each time a player can be "tagged".
What does that do in the end? If MT doesn’t want to extend in Calgary long term what does it matter if you can tag him for another season? Seems unnecessary to add that imo.

Jets went through this with trouba. Bridged him just 2 years then he filed to go to arbitration. Got a 1 year deal and was dealt before the draft in 2019.

MT has not demanded a trade out. He would return in a 1 year deal and then hit ufa if that’s what Calgary wishes to do.

I mean he is 1 year from UFA. He can force his way out easily by signing a 1 year deal. That's his right. Same as Dubois saying he wants out and will only sign for 2 years.

That's how it goes. Understandable why the fans of the teams don't like it but teams get 7+ years of control and more than half a players prime That's already a lot.

If the league wants parity then something needs to be done about these prima donna mama's boys who want to play back home. Having a cap doesn't cut it if these guys pout and refuse to play for Canadian teams. Maybe we should go back to drafting and keeping players in our area. If all Canadians came back home to Canadian teams there would be no problem competing.

People laugh, but I think there is something coming in the next CBA for the NBA which is going to punish players that demand trades, think NBA owners are sick and tired of it, the NHL might hop on board.

That said it's kind of hard to tell a player who is a UFA and put in 8 years with a team that they don't have the right to go where they want.

The best fit is the Kraken but they need to keep their picks and prospects

There are 3 teams that makes sense and have cap space however I am not sure Tkachuk would extend with them
1) The Sabres
2) The Coyotes
3) The Islanders

The next tier where Tkachuk might extend and they have cap space but I am not sure it makes sense
1) The Red Wings
2) The Ducks
3) The Devils
I wouldn't put the Isles in this boat, we have three RFAs and would need to maneuver to make this fit. It's certainly doable but I'm sure several other teams can do the same thing.

Is there a shortage of Canadian players in the league?

Will the Flames be looking for futures or will they still try to compete?

It's gotta be futures, 24-25 year olds do nothing for them when they're rebuilding and once they're done they could be walked to UFA. Probably a young roster player like 21-22 years old, A/B level prospect, first rounder.

its time to ditch the cap, The Leafs could have Miller and Tkachuk but we would have no 1sts for the next 6 yrs and our development camp would be 1 kid

Time for a full on rebuild tbh. The Flames could get a ransom of draft picks and prospects for what they have on the roster so could be a quick rebuild. No point in trying to salvage the season when Fantilli, Michkov and Bedard are up there.

Treliving looks pretty dumb right now for letting both of these negotiations table in the same summer.

Granted how much he was really able to do about Gaudreau certainly seems questionable.

I’ve no doubt that Gaudreau pulled the rug out from under them.

Letting it get to that point, especially when Jersey had allegedly offered 2 OA for Tkachuk, who it now seems made it know that he’s only back if Johnny is back, is bad GMing.

I'm just saying that if the owners want to add the tag to the CBA they have to give somewhere.
If all RFAs lose one year of control, then they (the non-tagged) will hit UFA sooner which will improve their earning potential.

If I was a Leafs fan ... I'll be honest ... I wouldn't be watching what's going on in Calgary with any glee. If American stars wanting to go back to America becomes a norm, that's not good when the Kings/Golden Knights/Ducks come a callin' for Matthews in a couple of years.

So you're saying that Canadian teams can't be successful without their American stars?

PS hope you've recovered from the Habs not drafting Wright.
No that is not what i am saying but if the stars you draft are american and they flee then you have to start rebuilding..ie Calgary. I would take all the Canadian stars over all the American stars any day!

And they did not draft Cooley either so you OK?
