I hate the staged fights. It just feeds the dinosaur enforcers like MacDermid and Reaves fulfilling their 1M salaries per year. That's exactly what the league doesn't need, and on the evidence we have so far Rempe is above that, and shouldn't entertain that in the majority of situations.

I think he definitely has to quiet things down, but some of it is unavoidable. Is he supposed to be invisible for five games to quiet things down? I'd rather he not do that. The analytics, goals, assists, goals called back, screening the goalie on a goal, storyline around him are all things he can't really control or you wouldn't want him to tail back. Staged fights should stop, and he has to be smarter about the hits.

But I also think there's an onus on all the people who are outraged to inform themselves. No one is defending the hit yesterday. At the same time, there's literally no evidence he's been a negative to his team so far. All the comments stating he can't play hockey should stop. They aren't aligned with reality. They come off as copium that there's this behemoth who is playing good hockey. And I'm sorry but he just shouldn't be getting crap for the Bastian hit or the Lybushkin hit. If people want to dislike him, dislike him for the suspendable hits, like the one yesterday. Should he stop hitting players because he's going to get shit for what really amounts to 2 minute charging violations?
Nothing he has provided in his 50 minutes of ice time has made up for the extra time he's put his team on the penalty kill.

Surely rangers fans would have no problems if someone ran shesterkin for a season ending injury like Krieder did to Price or if someone threw an elbow into Panarin's head.
It would be interesting to see the reaction both from the league and from the Rangers fans defending Rempe if something like that happened. Frankly, this should be a wakeup call to the league to clean the game up and get rid of this sort of hit but they won't. I am saddened the players are ok with this. One call from the NHLPA and these cheap shots would be penalized enough that they'd stop. Clearly, the players don't care about their own health and well being.

Another memo to the league about a despicable act of violence if it happened against the rags

If he can learn to control himself nobody will object to him playing just like the other guys that still fight a decent amount. Hit guys all you want, but answer the bell and avoid hitting guys with your elbows. It's not complicated.
But he literally does answer the bell. His first few games he fought like every game when all these thirsty enforcers tried to staged fight him. You can't expect a player to fight every game.

And I don't think there's some onus to fight someone for a non-suspendable hit from weeks back and answer to a player who wasn't on the team at the time of that hit. That's so stupid, and comes off like some WWE stuff.

I realize you are emotional that your player got injured back then and that's an understandable reaction as a fan, but unless you literally want hitting out of the game you have to understand the difference between the hit yesterday and the hit two weeks ago.

One is an unfortunate outcome that is probably a penalty but really nothing egregious. The other will result in a suspension. You can't be outraged at both and condemn him for both. They are not remotely the same thing. If you want to come off as objective, you can't expect him to fight for the first hit.

If you are an enforcer and lay a huge hit like the one put on Bastian, a player on a huge rival no less, you are going to need to answer for it. Him declining MacDermid broke that part of The Code as well, so that is strike two.
He didn't decline MacDermid really, the refs immediately collared MacDermid to keep him away from Rempe and surrounded Rempe to try to prevent that. Refs 100% clearly did not want to let that shit happen and I'd have been surprised if they even let them go if they got ahold of each other. Rempe would have needed to wade through the refs and linesmen to "accept" MacDermid's challenge while MacDermid is being held back by another ref. Not a smart thing to do.

He's also not required to fight MacDermid earlier in the game. He was trying to play hockey, there's no code that Rempe needs to accept every fight at every instant. Not only that but the code has always been bullshit and players have ignored it or done whatever the f*** they want whenever they wanted. This isn't the old days either and we need to stop pretending it is.

Rempe needs to fix his hits so he stops getting into trouble there, but he also shouldn't be dropping the gloves on his first shift every single game because some worthless hack like MacDermid wants a piece for no good reason. It's time he plays hockey first, and staying in the game and not getting tossed because of a dumb hit is part of that.

Perhaps don't throw elbows into skulls if you don't want to fight

Um... Not going to get into how Emelin tripped Kreider...

So let's talk about how the league failed to police Wilson and created an arms race. (no pun intended)

Wilson blatantly injured Panarin, no supplementary discipline.

Rangers decide to change the makeup of their roster to conform to this league "blessed" physicality.

And here we are.

Lol sure thing, bud. “No good reason”. The guy ducked it and you’re whining about how there was no reason to answer the bell. You’re delusional.

I can’t wait until your guy gets domed and you’re all crying about how that guy should “answer the bell”.

He declined him on more than once occasion earlier in the game.

Yes, he needed to answer for the Bastian hit. This isn't a case of "some worthless hack wanting a piece for no good reason", it is an NHL veteran politely asking a rookie to honor The Code and get it out of the way for the Bastian hit.

C'mon if the roles were reversed and MacDermid or another Devils player had injured a Rangers player for the rest of the season on a dirty hit in the prior game, you don't think that Rempe would be out there targeting that player and Rangers fans would be calling said player out if he refused to answer the bell?
What difference does that make? I'd call MacDermid or any other player smart for doing the exact same thing if this was Rempe going after them. I'm not saying MacDermid had no right to try and go after a player, but they came into that game with 1 plan and Rempe was smart taking that away while the team was buzzing. And up until the hit, he played it very smart.

“Nasty slashes” lol. Kept his gloves on, never came close to initiating anything resembling a “fight”, and Rempe throws his gloves off and punches him in the jaw. Guy is a through and through piece of shit.

I mean, yea, that first slash was a pretty nasty two hander. You're really gonna argue that?

You slash someone like that and then get in their face, not sure what you or him thought was gonna happen. that was pretty stupid by him.

hope he's okay after hit from last night

I mean, I do think it's silly that the Devils have no team toughness and had to run out to trade for a goon because they wanted payback and then that Rempe is supposed to immediately oblige them in that. Instead he played hockey and was instrumental in how the game winning goal was scored. Does that happen if he's instead focusing on matching up with MacDermid whenever he gets on the ice? Maybe not.
He's clearly been told by the coaches to focus on playing hockey first now and they don't want him dropping the gloves every time a goon tries to get him to go.

To drop the "passionate fan" thing as much as I can here, yeah I get it. Fans and the team want payback. I feel that it's awkward to have a guy who wasn't even part of the team a few weeks ago suddenly be all like "yeah you gotta answer to me! The guy who wasn't even teammates with the player you hit! That's right, you need to do what I demand when I demand it!". It's awkward, but I get it.
But the whole Rempe thing (taking out the history with NJ) was getting overdone and the coaches and team clearly wanted him to settle it down with the fighting. I'm sure they'll tell him next time that he plays NJ to accept the fight in order to put a lid on all this, but at the moment you got a young kid thrust into a weird spotlight first because he was having huge fights and all and then clearly the team telling him "the energy is great but you gotta pull back a bit and fight when we say it's OK" so he's trying to find this line of how do I stay in the league by doing the fighting thing but also doing what my team wants me to.

Anyways, the elbow has nothing to do with all that and hopefully he's suspended and it gets him to figure out how to play on the line and not over it.

Eh I mean I don't think much of the code. Like I said it's mostly an excuse with no real hard rules that vets ignore all the time when it suits them.

e: we're trying to put some shine and "honor" into the idea of people getting mad and punching each other while wearing knives on their feet. It's just silly. It's boys who never grew up mentally and emotionally trying to scratch out a tough living in a pro sport. Any notion of honorable or such is misguided.

I don't believe so.

I believe you should try to judge hits in a vacuum but his first hearing being in person would go against whatever semblance of precedent the DoPS has.
It's the Rangers. Second only to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the most despised team in the game. Very hard for people to see any controversy involving the Rangers in a vacuum.
