Yeah, indeed.

Part of it was the manner in which Lou rushed him into the lineup.
He should have spent a few full seasons in Albany.

However, now we can see that he just doesn't cut it in this league aside from possibly a fill in 4th liner.

Honestly, I do wish him the best with MTL.
Nothing against him at all.

To be honest, this doesn't mean anything except the fact that they all suck at even strength. Matteau's lone point for the Devils came on a terrible goal allowed by Neuvirth.

Compare their GA/60 to Matteau's as well.

I suppose this is akin to being the 3rd tallest of Snow White's lovers.

Considering that not one of these players should even be in the NHL next (or this) season with the exception of JJ, you are just confirming everyone's opinion by grouping Matteau with these losers.

Honestly just confirmed to me it was the right move to dump him for a position of need (RW) and we need to cut away more bottom 6 fat this offseason.

Good lord is ruutu and Tootoo bad

I do feel bad for them though. Between the Price injury, having to actually watch Ben Scrivens play games for them this year, their GM not firing a bad coach, now this trade. They've had it a lot worse than most fanbases on the year.

This, at least that's the sense I get from their trade thread over there

I think most habs fans weren't batting an eye over the trade initially, but once DSP had an immediate impact with NJD the exchange quickly became yet another reason to hate on the coach and gm for poor asset management

And I totally get that because I agree MTL fans had a rough season aside from that initial head-turning 9-0 start

I really worry for Montreal if Matteau being French was a major reason for this deal. At this point I wouldn't even be surprised if they won the lottery and took Pierre Luc-Dubois at first overall. It's that bad.

I would imagine it had everything to do with DSP's RFA status and Montreal having higher priorities.

DSP's even strength scoring is actually very impressive this year (same amount of ES goals as Pacioretty, Lucic, Eberle, Malkin, Kopitar). Not buying that he's any good really, so maybe we can actually flip him in the offseason for something decent, or part of a package.

People will always have wild speculation, one guy commented on their board Bergevin was a teammate of Stephane's and probably partial to his kid. I don't really believe the Francophone thing applies except for coaches and captains generally

Most likely not but who the hell knows up there. It is a strange and large market.

Numbers aside, he's actually looked really good. He positions himself nicely in front of the net and fights really hard for the garbage. He's also shown his skill with a snipe and a couple beautiful passes. At the very least he's a good 4th liner but he's shown enough to be penciled in on the 3rd line going into next year. If he parks himself in front of the net, he's gonna get goals just by chance. No one else on this team is either willing or capable to do the dirty work that he's doing.

There were apparently a few articles written about it up there.

It's possible. I don't buy it a lot but hey, Bergevin does not need that to be stupid. We had acquire Danault not that long ago. But hey, acquiring a francophone is all great if the said francophone can actually play hockey in this league. Who cares how many francos we have in the ECHL.....He still had to address Matteau,s talent....and that seemed to not have been done.

I couldn't care less about what his advanced stats say to be honest.

He's looked great since joining us, the points are a bonus. He's fit in very well with his linemates and with Hynes' system, he brings an element that we've lacked for a while and an element we hoped Matteau would eventually bring. And he's still pretty young. I don't want to lump him into the "core" group of guys but I can see him being a good guy for us to keep around in the long-term. AANNDD he's a right wing which we sorely lack.

It'd be foolish to trade him, absolutely foolish.

DSP will certainly not keep this up next year, but he's depth on a team that sorely lacks depth. He'll still be useful even when his scoring inevitably regresses.
