He's a marked man for other tough guys at this point if only because of the media attention he's gotten. Olivier went from being a nobody and really upped his profile and others will want to do that too. So if he's playing for us most of the rest of the year he's going to get into fights because certain players are going to be looking for it.

A couple things---it might help if he started stretching pregame somewhere other than around the team's redline. He's not getting a ton of ice time so some night's where it might seem like something might happen maybe it won't. But also when he hits someone at speed it draws attention too. That's just a given. I imagine also if he goes back to Hartford the celebrity he's gotten is going to ramp up in the AHL and FWIW things might not calm down for him until next year.

He's entered the NHL by storm kind of in the way Derek Boogaard did (R.I.P.). Boogaard at the point he made the NHL was pretty much a finished project. He never really improved as a player. Rempe's game has been improving steadily but he's still got a ways to go IMO. He's very much a work in progress. Despite limited ice time we see he can hang as an NHL player. Skating is very good but there's room for improvement still. His puck skills are pretty limited but there's some room for improvement there too. He's shown a decent sense of the game and seems to have an idea how to use his size battling for pucks and being in and around the crease is a way he can put it to good use. The team needs to commit to his improvement....not just see him as a fighter. He and Edstrom on a line together in the future could be a hell of a problem for opposition defenses especially as they become better and more experienced players.
Amen to this. EVERY WORD OF IT!

The tilt against Martin like 2 seconds into his debut on national tv was interesting. By the third fight, I have no interest in it anymore. It's just watching a 21-year-old get hit in the head really hard. I hope the adults in the room will step in.

The Rempe that I'm very interested in is the guy that's forechecking with frightening speed and hitting guys so hard that you hear it. And he does that without having to run around or take penalties. He's just that big. Regular body checks are like wrecking balls.

I want to see him become a big agitator with momentum-changing physicality, who, you know, handles some business 2, 3 times year. I don't want to see him become a staged fighter with more concussions than goals.

This picture is why I really want somebody to go over videos with Rempe.

1. Rempes helmet is coming off way too easy.

2. Rempe's left arm (non punching) is all the way past Oliver's shoulder and head. That gives away his reach advantage. That allows Oliver inside.

I watched John Scott's thing on this today. He also pointed out the bad grab and said give him Rempe for a week and he'd fix most of his issues. If I got him right Scott sounding willing to do that and Rempe might want to think about that and take him up on it if he's still willing in the off season. As is--the way he's fighting someone is going to get hurt and I'd rather not it be him just for our team's sake and because I'm a very parochial homer. These are real fights he's been getting into where people are swinging for knockouts. From watching him the last two years in Hartford none of them really have been as wild as either the fight with Deslauriers or Olivier. Anyone can watch them for themselves at Hockeyfights. Most all of them are up there.

If I'm Rempe I'm calling Scott on my first night off. A few small tweeks could add years to his career.

Yeah I get the first fight. Outdoor game and it’s his first game, cool. But why let let him do this shit 3 times in a row? Was the plan to just play a man short for half a period every game? They already do that with Goodrow

He’s played 43 games in Hartford with 7 fights. He’s also gotten increasing ice time as the season’s worn on. It’s not like he’s had 30 fights and 350 PIMs like the old days.

He’ll be here at least 3 more games. He may fight, he may not. Developing fine with more to go. I expect he’ll get better with the gloves on as well as the gloves off.

Handwringing for nothing at this point

His team should spot him on a couple . Guys like Trouba and Cuylle can tie up the big boys and for the punks like Hatheway even Kreider should be able to tie him up so he won't get hurt and then we still have Schneider and Goodrow who can handle themselves . Those guys need to step it up instead of Rempe doing it all .
Watching the game I was really hoping someone else would challenge Olivier.

I can't believe the WSJ ran an article about our rookie. In the WSJ article another picture of how Rempe is allowing shorter guys to pull him in close negating his reach advantage. He needs to use that left arm to establish that distance via his reach. https://www.wsj.com/sports/hockey/matt-rempe-rangers-fighting-9ba63897

Big media presence at practice yesterday. All the articles are out today.

No one could’ve expected this kid to be the talk of the hockey world.

As far as the technique, it’s the only way for the shorter guys to land anything. He can improve his grab but will also get better as he gets stronger. In a few years he can lock out better while he pummels the opponent.

I agree but I want him to get his defense up now even if it is not entertaining. The key to his defense is locking that left arm in a solid way so these shorter guys can only hit his arms and shoulders. I do not want him to get hurt. Despite his height he is still a skinny armed kid going against grown men.
