First impression is a 2-3 game suspension, but would like to see more video of Bastian leading up to the hit.

Looks like Rempe has a considerable amount of time to line up this hit—not a case of Bastian moving his body immediately before contact making the head contact unavoidable.

Oh look! An accurate account of what happened, in the context of rule 48.1!

Do you think it’s plausible that Rempe elevated his elbow and that his elbow did most of the damage?
Because the 2nd angle is full body contact imo. Maybe still Rule 48 because he elevated? But I wouldn’t be surprised to see DPS go after him for the elbow and not 48

I mean, he's skating with his head down and leading with his head. What is Rempe supposed to do? In theory, Bastian could skate head down and head out all the way down the ice and can't be touched because any hit from the front is a head shot.

NHL has to consider he put himself in a stupidly prone position.

Wait do people think you skate with your head up purely to avoid contact?

It's funny, there are a ton of advantages to being tall in hockey..but guess what, there's one disadvantage: you gotta be careful with your hits.
This is very true.

Unless you’re legitimately skilled like Chara, it’s gonna be hard for someone who is 6’8 to stay in the league.

I love physical players like Rempe but I don’t see him lasting long here.

Do people think its a good idea to skate with your head down?

Of course not. Not just because you might get blown up, but because you can’t see anything. Yes Bastian has his head down to pick the puck off the boards, there are situations where you need to drop your head. That not a green light to blow a player up, It’s on the player making the hit to avoid significant contact with the head.

If a cross check to the face gets 5 then I honestly think it should be more than 5 . Long term there is more complications to head blows like the one in the video . Tall players have to use judgement. I've played hockey my whole life and he was commited to that check the whole way through.

Found the guy who never played hockey.

Didn’t look like an obvious extended elbow to me. Thought Rempe made head contact with his shoulder.

The issue I see is Bastian was in a vulnerable position, and Rempe should have had enough time to recognize that and the option of doing something different to avoid or reduce (such as slowing up) Bastian’s head being a main point of contact.

The 48.1 Illegal Check to the Head rule puts the onus on the hitter to not make that head contact hit if avoidable. The opposing player being in a vulnerable position is a possible defense for why the head contact was unavoidable, but not a justification that any head check on a vulnerable player (through the body core or not) is therefore legal.

I feel like if you think the only reason you skate with your head up is to avoid contact, it’s pretty good evidence you didn’t play hockey.
Nothing wrong with the hit and nothing will come from it. It was a horrible call the NHL will bury. And once they announce there will be nothing further i’m sure you will disappear from here.

this probably shouldn't be anything more than the call on the ice. the new angle makes the hit seem less violent. the contact with the head is mostly because of rempe's size. no significant injury on the play and bastion was feeling fine enough to fight trouba later in the game.

I can’t say I’m confident the NHL will follow through with severe enough discipline, so I’ll be here regardless to discuss how poorly the NHL deals with headshots. There’s not a level of hockey where that hit is okay.
