And maybe they're right and there's enough past precedent that Rempe won't be suspended at all.

I'm simply giving my interpretation on what the NHL should do. If they actually took player safety seriously, they would/should suspend on hits like this. Clear hits to the head that result in injury should by punished.

I also question the Devils' training staff for letting Bastian back in the game. The guy was clearly dazed and ended up getting himself into another dangerous situation shortly thereafter that led to him leaving the game due to injury.

Both of these things lead to the key question - is the NHL *actually* showing they care about the brain safety of their players? At times, I highly doubt they are.
He wasnt dazed. We definitely watched different games. He was pushing the trainers away immediately

Shocker...

It wasn't even a penalty.

People need to look at brian boyle, he was the same size and he hit people all the time without an issue. today's generation of players is the group that grew up without body checking at younger ages and it keeps showing how they have no idea how to be aware on the ice and are surprised if they get HIT instead of just rubbed out. This is still a hitting league, for now...

Seemed officials played it scared. Fine - but the player should not be allowed to return from a hit like that as well if the NHL is so concerned (it should be but they only pretend).

Tall players can play as well.

You brought up Chara, somehow being the poster boy of clean hits while being a big guy, which I am saying is dale stale horseshit.

Chara is a fantastic example of hitting hard and clean across a lengthy hall of fame career. Heavy through the body of the opponent if you were to ask a player rather than fans of rival teams.

However he was not a forward racing around the rink as this Rempe is so it is comparing apples to oranges.

Boyle never tried to hit someone as hard as Rempe

I still think it was a penalty, no suspension is fine though. He tried to throw a clean hit, he got the other guy in the head too much. It's the kind of stuff that the league looks at more closely and also probably if there wasn't blood it wouldn't have been 5 minutes and a game.

Tell that to Brendan Dillon

You're right that it doesn't really matter. With the instigator, Bastian would have gotten an additional 10 minute misconduct, but he ended up leaving the game anyway.

It's just annoying that every time Trouba lands a hit like that, he ends up having to fight and is lost for 5 minutes. I'm not going to argue with you about how clean those hits are, but even you must admit that his hit on Bastian was clean. Trouba shouldn't need to defend himself and then sit in the box for 5 minutes just because he landed a good, clean hit.

Is it though? It's usually ends up being pretty positive. It seems to give the team and other players energy and momentum when their captain throws a hit like that and then throws down.

Esepecially when the other team takes an instigator or extra penalty to fight him over said hit.

The hit wasn't that hard, it just looked bad bc bastian got bloodied from the visor. boyle absolutely hit people that hard, especially in the playoffs. he was one of the guys that 100% bought into tort's motto of every hit in the playoffs was an investment

No different than the Brendon Dillion hit a few weeks back. Dillion was given 3 games. I expect the same suspension here
The two hits arent remotely close

No suspension. Again. This is hockey, not golf. Clean textbook him. Being big isnt suspendable Rangers Matt Rempe Won’t Face Further Discipline for Illegal Hit on Devils Nathan Bastian

There wasn't a suspension because it probably wasn't even worth a major penalty in the first place.

"But he hit him in the head."

That isn't how the f***ing rule works in the NHL and it's ridiculous that people don't understand that at this point.
The very online crowd who recently started watching the sport cant fathom this. This hit was textbook. It frankly wasnt even minor worthy

Can you edit OP so everyone knows it was deemed clean and no suspension coming? Thanks. https://x.com/peter_baugh/status/1761066636088381504?s=46&t=26_x12cWOJlCYQ-yLb1QVw

It's amazing how you know so much about a player you never heard of until last night.

A menace? He's a big guy who plays a physical game. The hit is unfortunate, but he's just a kid playing his game and trying to stay in the lineup. If you want to call him a menace, you'll need more evidence than this one hit.

Rempe could have held up. The hit deserved a penalty, and he got a penalty. Stop trying to make this out to be more than it is.
I do not need to see more than his fight the first game and now this malicious hit. The NHL was trying to get rid of these guys who just play to injure or fight. It made hockey almost unwatchable in the early 2000's wit the staged fights and star players getting lit up. He is another Boogaard, Chase or Reaves

The pwhl offers great action and you don't need to worry about textbook big hits hurting your sensibilities

No, the 'guy' had *himself* in a vulnerable position. Thats not of Rempe's doing.
Well some may realize he is in a vulnerable position and show respect for an opposing player and not try to kill him. I personally wouldn't risk ending a guys career by taking advantage of a situation. Not this one specifically. But that's me. I am fully aware many others wouldn't.
