Buying him out puts a $2 mil dead cap space on Leafs books,

Next year +1 in 2024-2025

Matthews re-sign $14 mil kicks in +
Nylander re-signed for $9.5 mil kicks in +
Tavares $11 mil still on books +
Marner $10.9 mil still on books +
Matt Murray buy-out $2 mil in dead cap space in 2024-25

= Cap Hell even worse then now with $47.5 mil tied up in 4 forwards and Murray mistake of $87,500,000 upper limit projected = 54% C.H.%
+
Morgan Rielly deal at $75. mil = $55 mil for 4 forwards and Mo = 63% of Leafs Salary cap.

= $32.5 mil cap to allocate to 8 forwards + 5 dmen + 2 goalies + 2 spares (17 players).

Treliving is inheriting a nightmare the next couple years until Leafs can get away from Murray and Tavares contracts.

I can definitely say that becoming the leafs gm in 2018 was a far, far better position to be in than Brad is in 2023.

Why would we give up anything? He was solid when healthy and if he’s not healthy he goes on LTIR

When was Murray solid exactly?

The guy finished with a 0.903 sv%.

There is no world where that is even decent.

I mean, we make fun of Edmonton with freddy who had a better sv %. Was he also solid except for when he wasnt?

I can't remember if the Leafs tried waiving him last year, but I know Ottawa tried waiving him multiple times with no takers.

You can't even give him away for free. Nobody is going to help the Leafs out with their cap problems. The fact the Leafs went with a rookie, Woll, in net for the final game of the playoffs, the most important game of their lives, while Murray looked on from the bench, tells us everything we need to know.

It's not going to be an easy resolve no matter what they do.
Lets not lose all hope just yet as fate has a weird way of working itself out sometimes.

Last year just around this time Leafs former GM thought it would be a good idea with 2 years remaining on Murray's deal to bring him in because of this former Cup wins in Pittsburgh. Now in a weird twist of fate that former Leafs GM has now ended up landing in Pittsburgh himself tasked with bringing Stanley back to that city.

What better ending could this story have then reuniting the two in Pittsburgh, as Murray former Cup success happened for that very team?

Is there a cap savings for waiving him?

It's wishful thinking, but Dubas was dumb enough to double down on stupid already.

More than once.

History has a tendency to repeat itself, so we can always dream....

Are you a betting man, because Vegas oddsmakers likely have Murray back to Pittsburgh as the favourite on their board?

Pittsburgh Fans love Matt Murray as does the Pens coach Sullivan and their new President as well. You know in your heart Dubas would like nothing better than rubbing Matt Murray future success in Leafs Nation fans faces now. Well come and get him I say !!!! :wg:

Penguins fans welcome Murray back to Pittsburgh with huge ovation

Senators goalie won two Stanley Cup titles in Steel City, feels love in return

January 20, 2022

Pittsburgh Penguins fans welcomed Matt Murray back with open arms and a loud chant.

The Ottawa Senators goalie, who helped the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017, was back in the Steel City on Thursday.

"I have so much respect for Matt and what he's accomplished in this League, what he accomplished when he was a Pittsburgh Penguin," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "He was a big part of the Stanley Cup championships that we won here. He's a great teammate. He's a good person.

"We went through this organization together. He was a huge part of this organization. You see what he did. He brought the organization two Cups, Murray played five seasons for the Penguins before being traded to the Senators in 2020.

"Quite honestly, I root for him from a distance," Sullivan said. "Obviously, when he's not playing against the Penguins. But on other nights, he's a guy that I care about."

Chants of "Mur-ray! Mur-ray!" filled the arena as he stood and acknowledged the crowd, waving and placing a hand over his heart.

There's essentially three ways of getting out of this contract: trade, buyout, or LTIR.

A buyout and LTIR both have cap implications that will further complicate the Leafs already screwed up cap situation.

The problem with the buyout is that while it saves significant money this year,, it comes with a $2M cap hit in 2024/2025.

That's the same year that Matthews, Nylander, and Liljegren all have their extensions and raises kick in.

They are going to be soooo tight to the cap that year that $2M will absolutely be a hindrance.

The problem with LTIR is that they can't accrue unused cap space and use it as leverage at the deadline. They would have to trade dollar for dollar to accomodate the incoming player(s). So they will be limited in pursuing rentals at deadline to third line chumps and bottom of the roster grinders again, unless they pay a third party to retain salary again. But if they did that, they may as well just go with option three: dump him.

I'm not a hockey expert. Just an armchair GM. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs attach a good prospect like Robertson and/or the 1st they got in return for trading Sandin, and just dump Murray on a tanking team.

There would be no cap implications that way.
It’s such a shame if they trade him and have to add the first. Dubas (and I’m still not sold that Shanny wasn’t just as much responsible) really screwed things up with all the draft picks he has given up, and really, no playoff success to show for it. Things may get worse!

Wouldn't the Leafs save a million on the cap if they put him in the minors? I don't think we are in the position to give up more pics. Stick him there and let it be done. If he plays well to be brought up he"ll have to go through the waiver wire.

The more you look back on Dubas, he was a horrible failure in Toronto.

Would love to know what Tre thinks of what he has inherited.

Lou took Martin off our hands. The least the stick boy could do is take Murray back.

There is 0% chance they trade the first straight up to dump Murray's last year. To get rid of Mrazek's two remaining years only required trading down 13 slots in the draft.

Oh, there will be a few teams interested in making sure they reach the cap floor, or hoping that Murray can FINALLY stay healthy. It remains to be seen how far down they‘ll have to drop to get rid of him. At some point it has to catch up to them, drafting lower.

You’re right, we did get a 2nd round pick back. Will we be that lucky with Murray? I’m not so sure. Maybe we get a 4th or 5th round pick back, if we’re lucky.

Why not just let him be the backup. If he gets injured again he can go on LTIR, if not he‘s capable of stopping the puck.

How do they navigate third string waivers if they signed Kallgren?

Murray being on the team requires having three goalies. That's really just a matter of kicking the can down the road, delaying the inevitable, and having one less spot available for a forward or defenceman. Assuming he's even re-signed at all, Kallgren wouldn't be anything more than a fourth goalie on the depth chart.

Odds are better he gets injured the more he plays. If the goal is to LTIR him, he's your starter. If history repeats, he'll be injured within the first two weeks.

Lol this guy is such a mess.. it was called a mess from day one. This is such an annoying mosquito around your face in bed kinda issue to deal with

They didn't sign him.. Ottawa gave him to us along with a 3rd and 7th round pick to take him for basically free

Yeah because he cant stay healthy and hasnt had a season above 0.910 sv % since 2018 - 19. Ottawa wanted him gone.

Yet dumbass thought it was a good idea to take him on despite his 4.7mil cap hit.

You'd think boy genius would've learned after his mess with mrazek. But here we are.

Murray had a 0.903 sv% this year.

I wouldn't say hes "capable of stopping the puck" when that puts him as below average.

You just made up some salaries that don't exist.

Cap hell is having Huberdeau at 10.5 or Kadri at 7, not Matthews at 14 (a made up number)

I can definitely say it is worse in 2018 with some long-term bad contracts and not as many good players.

Lou had this team in a much better position than dubas is leaving it in. This is not even debatable.

Anyone who says otherwise is clearly a dubas fan boy and I'm not at all surprised you think this way.

Why do they have to have a third goalie on the roster. Can’t they call up a goalie if/when he gets hurt?

Odds are better he gets injured the more he plays. If the goal is to LTIR him, he's your starter. If history repeats, he'll be injured within the first two weeks.
Woll needs to start to see if he can be a number 1.

For this year that would be fine for 25 or so games.

So Dubas built a team that did better in the playoffs and regular season, but Lou had the team in a better spot, got it.

I am glad that results don't always matter.
