Yeah, it wouldn't cost much to move him. And as crazy as it sounds, Mrazek played less than Murray the year before the trade (18 vs. 26 starts)... and the two years before (32 vs. 46)... and the three years before (68 vs. 71). So Mrazek was both way worse than Murray and somehow even less reliable.
Which teams would be interested in Murray that Murray would waive to go to ?? After last year I doubt there are many/any takers.

Also, for ppl comparing him to Marleau,
Murray won’t cost as much to dump, for many reasons :

1) His cap hit is quite a bit lower ($6.25 vs. $4.7)

2) He’s over a decade younger (Murray will be 29 next year, Marleau was 40)

3) He’s more useful. Murray is still a quality backup or decent 1B type, Marleau was on the edge of retirement and no longer a clear NHLer. UFA Marleau would have got ~$1-1.5 mil on a 1 year deal, he was overpaid by ~$4.85-5.25 mil. UFA Murray would get ~$3-4 mil on a 1 year deal IMO, overpaid by ~$0.7-1.7 mil. If you have a young goalie who needs some insulation, but you don’t wanna make any long term commitments, 1 year of Murray at $4.7 mil AAV is a solid fit/useful piece

4) Dubas was a poor negotiator back then. He traded Marleau about 1 year into being GM, he got taken advantage of all over the place his first ~1 year. Marleau trade, Kadri trade, got worked in the JT, AM and Mitch deals - all happened in his first ~14 months on the job, all examples of poor negotiation by Dubas. He became a very good GM later, with more experience, but at that point he was someone you could swindle in deals, which the Canes did

His price tag should be much closer to what Ottawa paid to dump him, or what we paid to dump Mrazek, than what we paid to dump Marleau.

Mitch Marner.
In a blockbuster deal that bring Helly, Morrisey, Connor or something to that effect.

Unfortunately a lot of reports make it seem like we will be unable to LTIR him.

Do we have to give up the 1st for him if so?

Id almost rather just send him to the Marlies until he gets hurt in 10 games and eat the 3 whatever million that isn't buried from the transaction
If he is injured the Leafs can LTIR him.

Only if gets injured training during the summer would that apply then.
Getting injured in the summer in any team related hockey activity would make him eligible for LTIR in the summer that the player will continue to be injured into the season 10 games at least. However, as Murray was coming off a concussion, dressing for the last game made him eligible to be bought out.

I agree. If he's healthy, play him. If not, LTIR him.

If he's healthy he might have s good year.
What does the 3rd goalie do to the roster limit? Wont they have to drop a skater?

I already got my wish for the return of Matt Murray and that was the removal and replacement of the former GM that made that ridiculous trade. and the TRUE answer of what would I be willing to give up to get rid of him. I was willing to give up another wasted Leafs playoff season as long as accountability for that action was accompanying the expected suffering it would bring on.

Virtually everybody in Leaf Nation, was on board this year & accepted that this would be Dubas last year in Toronto (while playing out a lame duck and on an earn it contract), after he hitched his wagon to Matt Murray and his former Stanley Cup experience claiming the answer to Leafs playoff struggles and if it it failed he would be toast and deservedly so, in what I believe all poor decisions should have just consequences.

So as far as I'm concern accountability for that poor decision has already been issued, and the rest of the disposal of this mistake is just the anticipated road kill aftermath, and will always be tied to the former GM anyways. Put him on LTIR, send him to Robidas Island, buy him out or whatever it takes is minor now to close this final chapter.

Brad Treliving is what Toronto got as a result of the Murray trade, and expected disposal cost in year #2 that comes with that.

Like I said originally unless he gets injured in the summer, he won’t be starting the year / summer on LTIR., as he wouldn’t be eligible.

So Matt Murray is going to be healthy out of spite?

If I’m running the team that guy gets two options. Either he’s LTIR and gets his money in full sitting on Robidas Island, or we bite the bullet and buy him out and he gets a fraction of his $8 million.
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
That started in a hockey game
With a groin that he did rip.
(A groin that he did rip).

I'd say suck it up for this season and bury him in the minors.

Or if we can retain half and give up like a third thats another option
If they were to bury him, the cap relief is $1.15M

Since Ottawa retained 25%, do the Leafs get the full $1.15M in cap relief or do they only get 75% ($862.5K) and Ottawa get the other 25% ($287.5K)?

There is not alot of free agent goaltenders out there.
Anderson injury prone 4 mil
Tristan Jerry 4 mil injury prone
Hill is going to want 4 mill

Murray retain 1 mil for future considerations
When he is healthy he is better than either of the goaltenders above.
If not buy him out

I think if anything we attach Bostons 1st to him and receive a early 2nd or 3rd like the Mrazek deal. Maybe a team takes him for future considerations, hopefully.

I think there is perfect trade partner for that scenario.

That team has

- $41M+ in cap room
- six picks in rounds 2 and 3 of this year's draft
- Has an open #2 goalie slot or can buy Murray out if that is what it takes for him to waive NTC
- Team according to some wants to get another pick in 1st round
