Player Discussion: Matt Martin

Even though MM is slowing down, there is something intangible about him that simply energizes this team. When he was checked head first into the boards last game, the team played at energy level 8, even with Johnston playing, who I like a lot and think has been underrated on the board for the past year +. But, when MM came back in, you could just see the team rise to energy level 9/10 instantly. Confidence and swagger were all of the sudden back. I think they need to keep MM.

What about a mil or 1.5 a year 3x3 or 3x2?
I definitely think Matty Marts would do a Eberle type of deal of no raise re upping at 2.5 x 2 years. Lou and Barry want him back, and Matt wants to stay. There is no doubt about that in my mind. And as I said the collective CCM is worth it. They are not a true #4 line, they are so much more.

I know we touched on this yesterday, but leadership can never be underestimated. If you just look on a stats sheet Matty Marts will never look like he deserving of his 2.5M per. Fortunately Trotz knows his value. Not sure what Matt did to Babcock for him to try to torpedo his career his final year there. But Matt has been instrumental on the ID line and the Isles resurgence. Whether it is throwing a hit, blocking a shot, his GA60 is off the charts that past 2 seasons, or even a goal and PK last night. He is a calming influence to the Isles, I would even go as far as being the glue. I just don't think Johnston is there yet. 2 more years at 2.5M

Yeah, he probably considers this home at this point and is thinking of transitioning to coaching or the broadcast booth after he's done. I doubt he's be so short-sighted as to sign somewhere else for a few hundred thousand extra.
Not for a few hundred thousand but if the Isles aren't offering a multi-year deal and other teams are, he'd be foolish not to take it.

Maybe I'm misreading his value, but I don't see him being someone that another team would invest multiple years in. 4th liner at best, doesn't really throw anymore, lots of wear and tear, can't score. He might get a 1 year cheapo deal somewhere, but I can't imagine anything beyond that.

It would be a bad idea to give him $2.5 when you can probably get him for half.

Yeah, I agree with you. I don't think he's worth $2.5M nor do I think that we should sign him to a long contract.

BUT, he is only 30 years old...

You know I'm one of his biggest fans, I agree with this. I don't think he will do better anywhere else. Go year by year at 1 mil the most.

This right here. He can pretty much lock-up a position with the organization for life by doing this. For PR reasons alone, the Isles are better off with having him associated with the organization.

That's right, but he looks like he's 35 sometimes.

Definitely, he's no longer worth $2.5M now. I believe that a 1M contract for one or two seasons is what the Islanders will offer.

Respect Martin but we’re trying to put a cup contender out there. Im inclined to offer him $1.25M and one year but I feel like Komorov is always destined to play that 13th forward role

Matt Martin will sign a 1yr at 1 mill deal with the Rangers over the summer . His time is up with the Isles . No , that was not easy to say.

i have no problem with Matty Marts. i say we keep him for a few more years as a 13th F, give him 2.5 mil. he's incredibly consistent, has better skills than most give him credit for, and is in great shape (i hear).

maybe even make him player coach, and have him go down to BP a few times a year, help coach and knock a few rookie heads.

2.5M is way too much for a 13th forward. He isn't actually good at most things hockey related. He is a poor skater, he isn't agile, he can't shoot, he can't handle the puck, he doesn't pass particularly well... he's good at checking, policing the ice, and knowing the system. Not worth 2.5M.

Ross Johnston can do what Martin does, iis a better skater than Martin, and costs a million dollars a year less
