I'd like to keep MM around and I was highly critical of the way Snow let him get to FA the first time, however at this stage in his career it would have to be super team friendly for me to want to give him a multi year deal. As others have pointed out, he's become more of an inspirational grinder than an enforcer.
Bringing Martin back for anything more than 1 million for 1 year is pointless. Ross can do everything Martin does and then some. He has better hands and is a better fighter. May not bring the same energy but I don't think he's asked to.

I'm in the corner of Matt Martin returning, I also don't believe Johnston is as good a defensive player as Martin is. There he was on the ice with a little over a min left in the game with Cizikas and Komarov with the caps goalie pulled. I don't see Johnston having Trotz's similar trust. I am also one of the few that really places value on GA60 5 v 5 and Martin is also one of the best on the team with this stat. It's a product of playing on the ID line. I would rather pay him 2.5 than Ladd 5.5 any day/month/year. I know some don't see it this way, that's fine we can disagree. But as long as Cal and Casey are on the Isles, I see value in Martin at 2.5. On another team with all 3 together, maybe none are worth their contracts.

As much as I love him, Matt should never see another multimillion dollar per season deal. If I was his agent, I’d try to lock down as much term and $-preservation certainty as I could, sacrificing $$$ amount per season. Maybe someone gives him $3.5 over 2 years, but is that better than locking down $5.2mm virtually guaranteed over 4?

I'd be fine with term to save money. Especially when it comes to AAv because I hate the reality that our bottom 6 is an expensive bottom 6.
I think Martin should be around for a bit, works with the team well and has success here. I'm ok with having him and Johnston on for a while.

No need to give him 4 years. Offer him a 1 year, 4th liner deal and as long as he remains useful, keep doing it. Nobody is giving him $1.75m a year.

Nothing would make me happier than for him to keep scoring pretty goals. That was a very nice give n go with Leo. If it makes them score, I'm happy to keep doubting them!

If Martin was more agile and could shoot, he'd be a 30 goal scorer with the opportunities he gets. It's amazing how poor of a shooter he is. He had the whole half of the net last night and still had to bank it in off the pad.

The only reason I brought it up is because I think he's had so many quality looks lately and can't finish. He gets it with time and space in the high slot, you know he's not getting a goal there. He might not even get it on net!
Still like him and what he does bring.

Like the guy and has been a good soldier for us. For me, its not the money on why I would lean on letting him walk, it's the roster position. Too many bodies that we HAVE to pay. Would he be interested in working for the organization, or wants to keep playing?

Of course he wants to play, he is only 31. I would be shocked if Lou doesn’t offer him a 1-2 year deal. Once he is done I could certainly see him coming back in some capacity but for now I’d have to imagine he is far from done lol He is a 4th liner who can give you 10 minutes, put up 10-15 points and is good defensively, one of the best in the league in terms of hits which is more important than most think. We will see what happens. If no Martin then I say break that lineup all together and give Casey a bit more talent to play with.

I love Martin and everything he's done, but we need to remove the emotion and cut the cord. He is just not needed anymore. Ross is younger, cheaper, and fulfills the same role. Let's move forward and stop looking back.
The 4th line has been really good in the past, but their time is coming to an end. We can use the roster spot and salary cap on other things.

Ross is also a better over hockey player in my opinion. Skates a lot better and has more hockey IQ than people think.

If he wants to play, it should be with another organization. Too many bodies with limited roster spots. I think him, Clutter, and to a lesser degree CC have already begun to decline. That's a lot of wear and tear on these players, especially the style they play. I hope I am wrong and like every fan love what they bring to the game. Also, its tougher for the older banged up players to get back in shape again in a smaller window and play important games right away and then re-start again when the next season begins. Lou has his work cut out for him!!!
