The reasons I don't think Lou will re-sign him are...

A) He's getting slower and producing less impactful hits.
B) He's not much of a fighter anymore.

McCarty was a different beast.

I'm not ****ting on the guy, he is an Islander legend and is currently useful, but his time is running out...
He is a better player than he was when he left, and any lack of speed that you see is probably injury related. He hits less, but no longer chases hits away from the play. The same fourth line that used to hit everything in sight will now hit you, take the puck, and try to score on you.
Lou knows what MM brings to the team, do not bet against a new contract for #17.

I was at that game not 30 ft away from the incident....Babcock could not help but laugh also....He is even uglier when he laughs

Who is he yapping with there?

Drew Miller. The best part is drew millers hair has been silver since he was in his 20’s. That’s why he said “ go dye your hair”

Funny - they are almost identical, stat-wise, for their careers. Martin has 123 points with a --41 total, Miller had 122 pts with a -34.

I don’t wanna jinx but haven’t seen any talk of this anywhere.

Is Matty going for the Lady Byng this year?

This still makes me laugh :laugh::laugh:

Too funny....I was scrolling down from the top of this thread and came across this video. I was about to post "who's he talkin' with there?" and then I scrolled down some more and apparently I asked the same question back in the spring.

I'm guessing we're mostly assuming Martin leaves after his contract expires next summer, but I wonder if he might stay on at a team-friendly rate? He'll be 31. So he could try to squeeze out a few hundred thousand a year elsewhere, but he'd have to earn that on the ice with the new club. Or he could stay here, play maybe 50-60 games a year and earn his contract partly on the ice and partly in the dressing room. He could then transition to the broadcast booth with the NYI or at NHL Network in NY. I'm sure Lou/Trotz love him.

I’m hoping he stays at a team friendly rate. That 4th line is so good defensively and create such a strong identity for the team. I would sign him at 2.75 x 2 years with the cap going up. Give him a small bump to reward his loyalty and keep it under 2 years. No doubt Trotz and Lou love the guy and Matt loves being an Islander.

I could see him staying on for less money. His life is on Long Island now. I wonder if he’d be so willing to uproot for a 4th line opportunity somewhere else. Another team might only extend him a PTO next camp.

He tested the waters last time and it didn't work out well for him, maybe he'll realize it's just too good of a fit to leave for more money and more risk.

No problems bringing him back, but I can't see him earning more than he already is. Two years maximum.

Even what he's making now is too much, I think. We'll have a real cap and roster crunch next year. I could see a 1 year deal at something slightly above minimum salary but that's probably it.

I can't see there being much of a market for him and he definitely wants to stay here. I can see him being the next Denis Seidenberg with the team but he's not quite there yet and probably still wants to play in the league. And he hasn't really cashed in. His contract has come up at the wrong times, unfortunately for him. He signed a 4 year/$4m deal and then only got $2.5m/year in FA. That's $14m in 8 years. Considering he was a regular player for that long (more or less), he didn't quite make the amount of money others have.

His free agent year was him cashing in. He's a career fourth liner, those guys don't make much over the course of their careers typically. He'll make more than league minimum but he's not a guy that should be getting a bonus for loyalty.

Would he get more than his current $2.5 million even as a UFA? If the Isles offer him $1.5 or $1.75 or something, is the extra money really worth it when his body is probably going to start betraying him and he could stay here, play less, and transition into broadcasting more easily (which I'm assuming is his plan)?

I could see a similar deal like eberle or komarov by lou. Lou likes to give a small carrot to loyal soldiers. Personally the way how Trotz uses the 4th line i would be happy if matt resigns as did eberle did. Same amount. Almost unheard of 25 k either way wont hurt the isles cap.

He'd probably get a PTO elsewhere - that's about it. Maybe vet minimum for a year. For us, the whole is worth more than the sum of the parts which is the main impetus for keeping him around. That and he's a great clubhouse guy and fan favorite. But you can't really pay a guy based on being a fan favorite. There's value in keeping that 4th line together but as you say, his body isn't going to keep up much longer. I'm not even sure if it is staying together now.

Mostly agree but if his contract was up at different times in his career, he could have maximized his return. His contract prior to this one was sort of where he got hosed. I'm not crying for him though - he's done pretty well for a grinder.

What about a mil or 1.5 a year 3x3 or 3x2?

I could definitely see a 2yr at 1.5 per range. Agree with PK that his UFA was him cashing in and he is a 4th liner now on the back end who has more value with the Isles than anyone else with that line chemistry. I believe he is more entwined with this organization and community than any of our recent players, so I definitely could see him being with the organization after he finishes up in 2 to 5 years.

The emergence of Johnston makes MM completely unnecessary moving forward.
gotta disagree. they are both valuable, and come PO time, both will be even more so. yeah, we probably have a cash crunch coming, but i would get rid of guys like Hickey and Ladd, before losing MM over 0.5 mil per year, for 2 yrs....
