I thought he would be a top 4 dmen by the end of they'll year for the Marlies... While that's still possible, with our d depth he might not get a chance to play top 4 mins this year.

I would like to remind everybody that Finn was pretty terrible in his first year of juniors. There was questions about his work ethic, fitness level, character, etc. And he came back the next year in top shape and was the Storms best player. Give the kid a chance and let him develop, he'll be fine and Im still betting on him eventually being a 2ns pairing NHL dman.

Patience! Its his first year going pro and its been noted that hes been dealing with injuries. It's only been 1/2 a year since he tore up the OHL and captained the best team in the CHL (that ran over the oil kings before, but lost 1 game... they still win a best of 7 easily IMO).

Gotta give him time, I think people got their hopes up too much from the memorial cup run and his high production, so when he doesnt transition really well right away people assume he's a bust.

D-men can take longer to develop and his skating was a bit of an issue, as he adapts more he should get better, guy is only 20.

if he's still doing poorly two seasons from now then i'd consider him a bad prospect.

I'm definately in favor of giving him as much time as he needs, I was just very surprised how invisible he was after watching him in the OHL

This is it exacly. I know patience isn't given to young players in this market, but some of these posters just need to deal with it. He'll be fine, I'm willing to bet on it too.

People know defenseman take a while right? Best to forget about him for 2-3 years and revisit this.

People say they want the Red Wings approach, but the fans can't handle it.

how's the Red Wing approach going with Ryan/Blacker among many other busted prospects

the Red Wing approach involved being a vet cup contending team for decades which buried their prospects , our Red Wing approach is to use their system as an excuse to deflect attention away from the disappointing development of some of our prospects .

where was the "Red Wing" approach with Reilly ?

Don't worry about him until he's 24.
This is what we are talking about though. Drafting and developing. It takes time. So help for Kessel/Phaneuf could be 5 years. Currently 18 year old Nylander is the only "true" top 6 forward in are organization. Everyone else is top 9 or bottom 6 (barring a major surprise). Same with our D. This is why we say rebuild the organization and rebuild to draft those core pieces.

Finn was injured to start the season and took awhile to recover, even when he did his game was off .. Picked up his play in the ECHL and is now back with the Marlies, seems like he's trending up after a tough start

People saying finn is a bust is laughable. Its the same people who say rielly isn't anything special because he isn't a top pairing dman yet

Kadri says hi. Nylander says yo. :)

At others have mentioned, give Finn time. He didnt have a good start and he even said he expected better from himself. Sent down to ECHL and now is back up playing much better since the call up
He is progressing back up and he will be fine

this guy was a projected mid 1st round pick and fell to us in the second round.

now i understand why teams passed on him.

Please, the kid is playing much better now.
Lol at you making assumptions like why he fell
Than again, these is leafs nation. The king of "killing youngsters"

Sam Carrick is a guy that played 50 games in the ECHL 2 years ago and people are excited about him to play on the Leafs full-time within the next couple years.

Leafs fans also have no idea about Percy and he comes in and shows everyone why he's a 1st round pick.

Matt Finn may take some time to develop, but there's a reason why he was a 2nd round pick. He also has no spot to rush into at the moment. There are spots being filled with young guys in the NHL (Rielly & Gardiner) and also at the AHL (Granberg, Nilsson, Loov, Percy). He's got years to become a great defenceman, so people should relax.

Thought I would provide an update on Matt
Like we know, he had a rough start and was sent to the ECHL. Was called back up.

Well looks like it was just a confidence issue. Finn has been one of the better d man for the Marlies now. Stat sheet isnt great at all, but he is really starting to play like the player we saw in junior though not at the level yet. He is however looking like his former self though and playing up to the standard we know he can.
Showing off a bit of his creativity with a puck as well.

Still work to be done, but we dont need to worry about Finn as he is adjusting to AHL hockey now

Well certainly playing like a top 4 d man now in the AHL. As he said, it was confidence more than anything

Yep. Although his skating still needs to get better, he has adjusted to the pace of the AHL. His strength is not an issue anymore as he is rarely getting beat to the outside and is rarely knocked off his skates. He's starting to use his stick a lot more like he did in junior as well. It's kind of funny, in the same way Rielly has been playing with more confidence since Carlyle left, Finn has been playing more onfidently since he came back from his ECHL stint. He's more talkative and just more engaged in the game.

If he ever gets a chance on the powerplay (I find it pretty disappointing that given the marlies current pp struggles he doesn't get an opportunity) I think he would get involved in a bit more scoring. But of course, its not like any of the marlies coaches have been on their game recently so I'm not surprised.
