Many people pegged him as needing 2 yeas AHL time. You literally aren't accomplishing anything here except for finally noticing his major flaw, his first 3 steps. Anyone who though he could be in the NHL this year strictly looked at his stats.

Two years in the AHL is pretty optimistic. Realistically he'll spend 4 plus years in the minors like a Jesse Blacker if there's some huge physical limitation setting him back. Think of it. ECHL apprenticeship this year, battle for an AHL job next year, then maybe 3 years in the AHL growing into a leadership role if all goes well.

I noted his flaw when we drafted him, I stated then that we took him to high....it is just not his first 3 steps....he has bad feet....poor lateral movement....is a flaw that most often prevent D man from playing at the NHL level. Lets hope that he can improve his skating enough to be an NHL player as he does have a very good head for the game.

That's been his problem since he was very young. He has been working with Underhill since he was 16, as she works with a lot of Guelphs players. A lot can happen from a skating standpoint in 2-3 years so we shall see. I've always viewed him as a 5-6 at the NHL level anyways.

So, how is the kid doing? Which league is he playing in right now?

Actually it doesn't. If you saw teams NHL teams lists, you would be shocked.

The fact that his skating is too weak for the A and the leafs had him rated 15th is very concerning. Look at the leafs second round picks and you will see nothing that will be of any use to the Leafs. I realize not every second round pick will work out but you would like to see more potential than the leafs recent seconds

To be fair it's not very often that the leafs have a 2nd round pick.

Fair, without hindsight who was your best player available at pick 35 in 2012? Finn was an excellent pick at the time and could really have a good impact on the Leafs. The amount of minutes he was playing, offensive upside he had showed, why not take a risk on him? I thought his feet would have improved more than they have at this age but they haven't, he has lots of time. There was also some very questionable picks that went before him.

Okay

He's playing in east coast right now... Has lots of potential, still too young in his career . In Guelph he had a hell of a team
Infromt of him

At pick 35 he might have been a reasonable pick. My concern was that they had him rated as a mid first round pick. As I am not a paid professional scout I dont know who would have been a better pick but the leafs second rounders cant even seem to play at a minor league level

Well, Finn is a young LHD. He would have to compete with MacWilliam, Loov, Knodel, Percy, and for some reason, Kevin Marshall for a roster spot on the Marlies. Finn was probably relegated to ECHL due to age and rawness. It will get more complicated next year when Valiev is fighting for a spot as well.

I didn't think you were being serious. Is he at least close to ppg?

Edit: 1pt in 7 games. Pretty sure next year will be his last chance to be a hockey player, let alone a NHL player.

I don't even know what your point is, I said a guy like Finn probably needs four plus years in the minors, because if you're getting your feet wet in the ECHL it's a long way to the NHL.

Wow... shocking to read the comments here. A lot of the negative posters working their misinformed magic, calling a kid a bust.

The ECHL move is to allow him top pairing minutes and multi-situational usage (PP/PK) to give him more experience. Just like they did with Biggs.

Defensemen take among the longest to properly develop (along with power-forwards like Biggs), so suggesting he's a bust at 20 when most D-men don't mature until about 23-25 makes all the talk in here obvious as completely baseless curmudgeonings from the peanut gallery.

Same people that probably called Kadri a bust, as well as the plethora of others.

Guess we'll start hearing about Nylander being a bust by next season...

If he's not earning those developmental minutes on a struggling AHL team it means he's an extremely raw prospect who is a long way off from the NHL. Otherwise, a high second rounder should be learning those minutes in the AHL.

And fact is most prospects DON'T make it, so it's really up to him or any prospect to prove they are the exception rather than assume he'll "be fine".

Matt Finn progression

I was able to catch a few Solar Bear and Marlies games this year, and I've gotta say, Finn was all but invisible. What happened to this guy? Is the pro game too much for him? He seems to get manhandled out there.

this guy was a projected mid 1st round pick and fell to us in the second round.

now i understand why teams passed on him.

2nd round pick put him out of mind for 2-3 years. I try to ferret he exists until he is making headlines.
