McTavish 9 GP 5 G 6 A 11 Pts. +6
Beniers 10 GP 0 G 3 A 3 Pts. -12

Beniers was the more finished product at the draft. Mac was the unknown to most of the scouting community, except that Mac has an NHL-shot. It was always the future with Mac, especially when he displayed skills in the D+0 season (at WJC-18) compared to his D-1 season, where he was only just a shooter at wing.

This could be a similar trajectory with Carlsson. As years go by, Carlsson will start displaying more as he continues to grow into his body.

I really don’t want this to be a Murray GM debate, but man was he smart in taking this guy. Mctavish has been proving a ton of skeptics wrong. What a home run pick
I still think Hughes is considered the best player out of this draft when all is said and done, but ya everyone who hated the McTavish pick (including me) has been eating crow ever since the pick was made.

This is why I can give a crap about the Calder.

I was actually pulling for Arizona's Maccelli last year. If he only had played maybe 10 more games at his scoring rate, then maybe he would have been considered in the final 3. He's a round 4 pick from the 2019 draft.

As for 18-year olds winning the Calder, it's rare unless you're a generational type player before the draft. Bedard is that player today. Some players are still developing.

Here are the top-6 rookie scorers as of this morning:

1. Ridly Greig, Ott, 7 pts: 2020 draft, 28th OA
2-T. Bedard, Chi, 6 pts: 2023 draft, 1st OA
2-T. Bobby Brink, Phi, 6 pts: 2019 draft, 34th OA (rd 2)
2-T. Mintyukov, Ana, 6 pts: 2022 draft, 10th OA
2-T. Luke Hughes, NJ, 6 pts: 2021 draft, 4th OA
2-T. Logan Cooley, Ari, 6 pts: 2022 draft, 3rd OA

The Calder doesn't factor in age, just NHL rookies who qualify the 25-game threshold. As shared above, there's so many varying ages. The Calder would be a great hardware to have as a rookie, but that's it. Some teams draft for the future, which is how Mac and Carlsson came about. But seriously, this year's Calder has Bedard in it and he's proving early he can hang. Thing is... who knew Minchy would acclimate and ascend to quickly in the NHL? He blew my timeline off by half-a-year to a year. Maybe Minchy can stay on the rocket all season and be more valuable as a defenseman?

They’re talking about McTavish on NHL Network Radio right now and praising him a ton and calling the Ducks “his team”.
Everything you hear about him is similar to what you hear about Mackinnon in terms of his commitment and as his presence grows in the lockerroom it's going to make other guys follow suit or hit the road for guys that will

Mac has got a pedigree of making the WJC teams "his team" as he captained both WJC-18 and WJC-20 to gold medals. I don't know if the Ducks are "his team", but he's making headway being a significant figure early this year.

I've been saying it since we drafted him, he's got captain written all over him. The kid puts in the work and leads by example. It would be a slam dunk if not for the fact that we drafted Carlsson who also oozes captain material. Either of those guys will be an amazing C for this team for many years.

My theory was always that they didn’t want to name a captain, and just go with A’s, because they are just waiting for him to get some experience and grow into a leadership role. Just keeping the seat warm for him, basically.

It's still early, but Mac is out front. Carlsson's personal is akin to Terry's. And if the Ducks haven't made Terry the captain, then Carlsson would be behind Terry.

The thing about McTavish is his ability to change up his game. At the WJC-18's, he was captain with Shane Wright, Bedard, and Pinelli. IIRC, in the gold medal game, Mac brought a physical element and hit everything against Russia. At the WJC-20, Mac was a captain again and was on a scoring spree until the elimination games. Shutdown C Ridly Greig got injured and Mac was double shifting from being a shutdown center as his first line and then played with offensive players on his double shifting. That's part of the reason Mac didn't score more points b/c he was busy shutting down opposing team's top offense to nail a gold medal win.

I'm not sure Terry nor Carlsson can switch up their play like Mac can. Yet, I don't know what factors Verbeek wants from a captain.

McT leading all Ducks in FO's so far (total and percentage), he improved considerably at the dot from the last season, it's plain to see.
I think it was written somewhere he was training FOs with Getzy this summe

It was said it in an interview with Mac, iirc. Don't forget that Mac is a workout machine and that added muscle and strength helps to accentuate Getzy's tutelage in the FO dot. Which means he can overpower some players now that he couldn't before last year.

McTavish is just an old-fashioned hockey player. I mentioned to my closest friend back in 2021 that I thought he could be Mark Messier-lite in his prime. Looking more like he could approach that level in a few years if he keeps progressing the way he is. Future captain, future all-star, future SC champion (hopefully).

I could deal with a little of that Messier meanness in his game too

He’s shown some of that this season. Last season he was timid.

Probably the rookie not wanting to rock the boat was my feeling. The other feeling is he was too strong for the OHL to run roughshod over the league, but realized he's still behind in strength in the NHL. We can see the difference in FO between last year and this year. And Mac's probably gonna get even bigger after next summer, which might induce being more physical.
